Behavioral economic analysis of opioid consumption in heroin-dependent individuals: effects of alternative reinforcer magnitude and post-session drug supply.

This study investigated the extent to which hydromorphone (HYD) choice and behavioral economic demand were influenced by HYD unit price (UP), alternative money reinforcement magnitude and post-session HYD supply. Heroin-dependent research volunteers (n=13) stabilized on buprenorphine 8 mg/day first sampled two HYD doses (12 and 24 mg IM, labeled Drug A [session 1] and Drug B [session 2]). In each of the final six sessions, volunteers were given access to a 12-trial choice progressive ratio (PR) task and could earn a HYD unit dose (2 mg, fixed) or money ($2 or $4, varied across sessions), admin

Pathways from cultural and economic stressors to mental and behavioral health risks in Hispanic youth: The roles of perceived stress and multicultural hassles.

Hispanic youth in the United States, including adolescents and young adults, face significant mental and behavioral health vulnerabilities. This observational study examined pathways through which cultural and economic stressors relate to depressive symptoms, aggressive/rule-breaking behavior, and tobacco and cannabis use among Hispanic youth. In addition to testing direct associations, we evaluate whether stress experiences (i.e., perceived stress, multicultural hassles) function as intervening variables that may help explain how youth internalize and attempt to cope with cultural and economi

Effects of economic empowerment and relationship strengthening intervention on financial behaviors among couples living with HIV: The Mlambe pilot trial in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Economic insecurity, relationship issues, and gender-based financial disparities pose significant challenges for couples living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, potentially undermining treatment adherence and health outcomes. We evaluated Mlambe, an integrated economic empowerment with relationship strengthening intervention for couples living with HIV. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial in Zomba, Malawi with 78 married couples (156 individuals) living with HIV and reporting unhealthy alcohol use based on the AUDIT-C. Couples were recruited from HIV care cl

Examining Caregiver- and Family-Level Psychosocial Influences on Child Oral Health Behavioral Outcomes in Racially and Economically Minoritized Urban Families.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the pathways linking caregiver- and family-level psychosocial factors and child oral health behaviors is critical for addressing oral health disparities. The current study examined the associations between caregiver psychosocial functioning and family chaos and child toothbrushing behaviors in children at high risk for poor oral health outcomes. METHODS: Data were drawn from the baseline wave of the CO-OP Chicago Cohort Study (U01DE030067), a longitudinal study on child/caregiver dyads exploring oral health behaviors and caries development in young children (N = 296

Navigating the personal carbon inclusion scheme: An evolutionary game theory approach to low-carbon behaviors among socio-economic groups.

In response to the challenges posed by climate change, China has launched the Personal Carbon Inclusion (PCI) scheme to encourage individuals to transition towards low-carbon lifestyles. This study investigates the behaviors of participants within the PCI scheme using a tripartite evolutionary game model, encompassing high-income and low-income individuals, as well as the PCI platform itself. The research analyzes participants' strategies, examines the evolutionary stability of different strategies, and assesses the robustness of equilibrium points within the game dynamics. Key findings reveal

Challenges encountered by parents from urban, lower social economic class in changing lifestyle behaviors of their children who are overweight or obese.

BACKGROUND: Parents from urban, lower social economic classes often encounter unique challenges in their lives, which shape how they work with their children who are overweight or obese to change their exercise and eating behaviors at home. The present study took an initial step to address a gap in the literature by describing the challenges that parents from lower social economic classes in an urban city encountered in changing exercise and eating behaviors of their children who are overweight or obese. METHODS: A conversational style semi-structured interview with prompts and probes was con

The relationship between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and children's mental and behavioral health: The importance of neighborhood socio-economic characteristics.

Urban outdoor play spaces are reported to improve children's health. However, there is little empirical evidence on the impact of outdoor play spaces on childhood mental and behavioral health. To fill this gap, we investigated the associations between residential proximity to outdoor play spaces and the prevalence of diagnosed mental and behavioral disorders. We explored whether these associations differ by individual and area-level socio-economic status (SES). This cross-sectional study included 151 110 children who were 0-12 years old in 2014 and were visited in public primary health care ce

Women, economic hardship and the path of survival: HIV/AIDS risk behavior among women receiving HIV/AIDS treatment in Uganda.

The results are presented from a 2005 survey of 377 women in four HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Uganda. The aim of the study was to explore women's economic hardships and the association with four sexual risk behaviors: whether a woman was sexually active in the last 12 months, whether a condom was used during the last sex act, whether she reported having had a sexual partner in the last six months who she suspected had multiple partners and report of forced, coercive or survival sex in the last six months. Few women were sexually active (34%), likely due to the high proportion of widows (49%

Behavioral Impaired Control over Alcohol: Comparing Self-Medication and Behavioral Economic Models with the Interacting Effects of Acute Stress, Chronic Stress with Physical Neglect History, and Sex Assigned at Birth.

The Self-Medication Model predicts that individuals exposed to chronic stressful life histories (life experiences and physical neglect) will exhibit exaggerated behavioral impaired control over alcohol (i.e., IC; drinking beyond intended and/or recommended limits during ad libitum drinking) after experiencing acute stress. The Behavioral Economics Model predicts those with physical neglect histories (denied necessities) will be more likely to exhibit behavioral IC regardless of the presence or absence of acute and/or other chronic stress. Neither of these competing theories of alcohol addictio

Cluster Randomized Pragmatic Clinical Trial Testing Behavioral Economic Implementation Strategies to Improve Tobacco Treatment for Patients With Cancer Who Smoke.

PURPOSE: Few cancer centers systematically engage patients with evidence-based tobacco treatment despite its positive effect on quality of life and survival. Implementation strategies directed at patients, clinicians, or both may increase tobacco use treatment (TUT) within oncology. METHODS: We conducted a four-arm cluster-randomized pragmatic trial across 11 clinical sites comparing the effect of strategies informed by behavioral economics on TUT engagement during oncology encounters with cancer patients. We delivered electronic health record (EHR)-based nudges promoting TUT across four nudg

Economic evaluation of a behavioral intervention versus brief advice for substance use treatment in pregnant women: results from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance use in pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and fetal morbidities and substantial economic costs. However, few studies have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of substance use treatment programs in pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the economic impact of a behavioral intervention that integrated motivational enhancement therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (MET-CBT) for treatment of substance use in pregnancy, in comparison with brief advice. METHODS: We conducted an economic evaluation alongside a clinical trial by collecting data on r

Development of a brief adjusting alcohol purchase task as a measure of behavioral economic demand for alcohol in two samples of heavy-drinking young adults.

Alcohol demand, reflecting the relative reinforcing value of alcohol, is robustly associated with alcohol use and problems. Alcohol demand is typically assessed using alcohol purchase tasks (APTs) in which participants estimate alcohol consumption at escalating prices, with the resulting demand curves yielding multiple indices of value. Although generally efficient, full-length APTs pose some burden and existing short forms cannot produce individual demand curves or derived indices. Thus, we developed a brief adjusting APT using an algorithm to identify 5-6 items from a full-length APT based o

Prevalence of behavioral risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and associated socio-economic factors among pregnant women in a rural area in Southern Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have dramatically infiltrated populations living in abject poverty in Low- and Middle-income Countries (LMICs), and poor maternal and child health outcomes have been frequently reported for those with CVD risk factors. However, few studies have explored the behavioral risk factors of CVDs among pregnant women in rural settings. This study aimed at determining the prevalence and identifying the socio-economic predictors of behavioral risk factors of CVDs among pregnant women in rural area in Southern Nepal. The association of psychological distress and economic and health worries with tobacco smoking behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic: a two-year longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and other life events may trigger worries and psychological distress. These impacts may lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as tobacco smoking, but the degree of such associations is unclear. The current three-wave longitudinal study examines changes in tobacco smoking in Norway between 2020 and 2022 and their associations with psychological distress as well as health- and economy-related worries. METHODS: Data were collected in April 2020 (baseline), January 2021, and January 2022 in Bergen, Norway, from an online longitudinal population-based survey. Smoking

Behavioral economic cannabis demand following recreational cannabis legalization: Six-year findings from an observational cohort study of community adults in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis demand, a behavioural economic measure of cannabis relative reinforcing value (i.e., incentive salience), is robustly associated with cannabis involvement. Recreational cannabis legalization in Canada has shifted the availability and social acceptability of cannabis, potentially altering its reinforcing value. Though prior studies have examined legalization-related changes in cannabis use and misuse, none have examined changes in cannabis demand. Thus, we investigated intraindividual changes in cannabis demand over the six years following legalization, overall and moderate

Feedbacks Using behaviOral econOmic theories on STEP countS in Cardiovascular Disease Patients (FOOTSTEPS) Using Novel Daily Step Counts Retrieving System.

The effectiveness of gamification-based feedback systems that utilize non-monetary points to promote exercise among cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients has not been fully evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a gamification program using non-monetary points on the daily step counts in CVD patients. We collected 30 patients with a history of heart failure or myocardial infarction at a single tertiary center between January 9, 2023, and April 13, 2023. The primary outcome was the change in daily step counts. The baseline step counts were compared with those during the 4-

Assessing behavioral economic biases among young adults who have increased likelihood of acquiring HIV: a mixed methods study in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral economic (BE) biases have been studied in the context of numerous health conditions, yet are understudied in the field of HIV prevention. This aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence of four common BE biases-present bias, information salience, overoptimism, and loss aversion-relating to condom use and HIV testing in economically-vulnerable young adults who had increased likelihood of acquiring HIV. We also qualitatively examined participants' perceptions of these biases. METHODS: 43 participants were enrolled in the study. Data were collected via interviews usi
