This review synthesizes studies published up to 2025 on cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) contamination in marine and coastal environments, identified through major scientific databases. After duplicate removal, 183 unique studies were included. Of these, 142 reported Co and/or Ni concentrations in water and/or sediments, 18 included organism-based data, and 28 were laboratory-based investigations. Environmental concentrations ranged from 0.0001 to 101 μg/L for Co and from 0.001 to 550 μg/L for Ni, whereas laboratory exposures ranged from 0.035 to 171,660 μg/L for Co and from 0.12 to 162,985 μg/L fo

Water-soluble polymers (WSPs) are emerging as a largely overlooked class of contaminants. Despite their widespread use, the lack of specific regulation contributes to the uncontrolled release, especially into aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns for environmental and human health. Among WSP-based consumer products, dishwasher pods are widely used and are typically enclosed in a water-soluble film made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and formulation additives. This study provided an integrated ecotoxicological assessment of such films in zebrafish (Danio rerio), combining physicochemical characteriz

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PHACs) pose a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems due to their persistence and potential toxic effects. Despite their documented presence in various coastal environments, their occurrence along the Mahdia coastline remains largely unexplored. Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), we analyzed seawater and sediment samples collected over six consecutive months from Mahdia's marine environment. Results revealed that antibiotics were the most prevalent PHACs, with ofloxacin reaching 401 ng/L in seawater. Other cons

Dinotefuran, a third-generation neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely used in agriculture production due to its excellent insecticidal efficacy. Considering its persistence and high toxicity in soil, it is essential to evaluate its low-dose toxic effects on non-target soil organisms such as the springtail (Folsomia candida). The results revealed that the 7-day half lethal concentration (7d-LC50) of dinotefuran contact toxicity to springtails was 0.029 μg cm-2. Its chronic toxicity in 4 soil types was ranked as: red soil (0.021 mg kg-1) > fluvo-aquic soil (0.040 mg kg-1) > artificial soil (0.049

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the ecotoxicity of micro- and nano-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2), either as active ingredients or incorporated into sunscreen formulations in the aquatic environment, by proposing a leaching protocol simulating a realistic scenario of human immersion in freshwater and seawater.
METHODS: To this aim, an ecotoxicological screening of micro- and nano-TiO2 active ingredients and incorporated into sunscreens was applied, by evaluating acute and sub-acute responses (bioluminescence and growth inhibition, immobilization, behaviour) in freshwater and marine bacteria

The integration of effect-based and chemical profiling has been advocated to assess the potential ecotoxicological risks posed by chemical mixtures present in aquatic ecosystems. However, the concentrations of contaminants in surface waters can vary greatly over time and space, making it challenging to ensure risk assessment. Although the first results are promising, it has not yet been proven that these combined approaches are also capable of capturing temporal variation in aquatic ecotoxicological risks. The present study aimed to test this by combining passive time-integrative sampling with

Microplastics (MPs) and pesticides frequently coexist in farmland soil; however, there are relatively few studies on the ecological risk assessment of soil animals attributed to the combined pollution caused by MPs and pesticides. Moreover, the influence of particle size on the combined toxic effects of MPs and pesticides remains poorly understood. In this study, different-sized polyethylene MPs (PE MPs; 10 μm, 500 μm, and 2 mm) were combined with a series of imidacloprid concentrations (IMI; 0.10, 0.50 and 1.00 mg/kg), and earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were exposed to these MP and IMI combinati

Rapid urbanization represents a global megatrend that is resulting in an increasingly urban water cycle frequently contaminated by human medicines and other chemicals. Concentration of chemical consumption is occurring faster than implementation of environmental health systems and interventions, particularly in megacities of developing countries, while 80% of global sewage production remains untreated. In these urban areas, antibiotics in the environment influence development of antibiotic resistance (ABR) by pathogens. Here, we examined the occurrence of ciprofloxacin, designated a critically

The use of biocides by industry, agriculture and households increased throughout the last two decades. Many new applications with known substances enriched the variety of biocidal pollution sources for the aquatic environment. While agriculture was the major source for a long time, leaching from building facades and preservation of personal care and cleaning products was identified as new sources in the last few years. With the different usage forms of biocidal products the complexity of legislative regulation increased as well. The requirements for risk assessment differ from one law to anoth

The water demand for human activities is rapidly increasing in developing countries. Under these circumstances, preserving aquatic ecosystems should be a priority which requires the development of quality criteria. In this study we perform a preliminary prioritization of the risky substances based on reported ecotoxicological studies and guidelines for the Biobío watershed (Central Chile). Our specific aims are (1) reviewing the scientific information on the aquatic pollution of this watershed, (2) determining the presence and concentration of potential toxic substances in water, sediment and

The toxicity of perfluorinated surfactants perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and PF-656 as well as the sulfosuccinate surfactant docusate sodium has been examined using two bioluminescence inhibition assays based on the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the self-luminescent cyanobacterial recombinant strain Anabaena CPB4337. We also determined multigenerational toxicity towards the growth of the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. With EC(50) values in the 43-75 mg/L range, docusate sodium exhibited a higher toxicity tow

Water pollution, intensified by anthropogenic activities, compromises aquatic ecosystems, especially through eutrophication, which favors the proliferation of microcystin-LR-producing cyanobacteria (MC-LR). We conducted a systematic and narrative literature review involving 72 studies on the effects of MC-LR on fish and 105 on remediation methods, aiming to understand the ecotoxicological impacts of this cyanotoxin and evaluate mitigation strategies. Our results show that most research is conducted under laboratory conditions, mainly with Danio rerio. MC-LR causes multiple adverse effects in f

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents represent the main source of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs (PIDs) in river systems in the U.S. Moreover, pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs (PIDs) contamination due to unsheltered homelessness, as is characterized by tents or sleeping bags along rivers and other waterways, could be another pressuring factor, but it has been scarcely studied. This study investigated the occurrence of PIDs in effluent and unsheltered homelessness-impacted sites in river systems in the U.S. In addition, potential ecological risks posed by selected pharmaceuticals to

The isolated evaluation of physicochemical parameters of effluents in landfill leachate treatment is insufficient to determine reductions in acute or chronic toxicity to aquatic biota. Therefore, ecotoxicity tests are essential to assess environmental contamination. This study evaluated the ecotoxicological impacts, through acute and chronic tests on different organisms, of raw landfill leachate, leachate treated with ammonia stripping and activated sludge, and leachate post-treated by coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) and adsorption using powdered activated carbon (PAC). Tests with

Herbicide effectiveness depends on the adjuvants in the formulation, with surfactants being crucial for systemic ones such as glyphosate, but surfactants are often more toxic than the pesticide itself to nontarget organisms, such as amphibians. Previously, a novel experimental formulation (EF) of glyphosate has been developed with natural products (alkylglucosides and saponin) with great efficiency in field tests. The objective of this study was to compare the toxicity of the EF with a commercial formulation of glyphosate (Roundup Full II, CF) by standardized bioassays (AMPHITOX). For this, em

Phthalate esters (PAEs), which are widely used as plasticizers in various industrial processes, pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health as emerging pollutants. This study aimed to compare different methods for extracting PAEs, quantifying their concentrations, and assessing the health risks associated with exposure to these contaminants. Based on the reviewed studies, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was the preferred sample preparation technique in approximately 60 % of cases due to its efficiency, low solvent consumption, and strong enrichment capabilities. Moreover, gas chromatogr

The intensification of anthropogenic activities has led to the widespread release of micropollutants, including mercury (Hg), into aquatic environments. Mercury is a persistent and hazardous contaminant with severe ecological and human health implications. Previous reviews have primarily examined mercury or microplastics (MPs) in isolation, but the novelty of this study lies in its focus on their co-exposure and combined impacts within aquatic food webs. Specifically, this review addresses the central research question: how do mercury and microplastics jointly influence bioaccumulation and eco

Organic pollutants are seldom found in aquatic environments in their original molecular forms; they are naturally transformed into degradation by-products through multiple pathways. Identifying these contaminants via their transformation products remains a major analytical challenge and demands innovative strategies. Here, we combined Direct-Infusion Mass Spectrometry (DIMS) with computational molecular modeling to identify pharmaceutical residues and their degradation by-products in a tropical estuary in Paraíba, Brazil. We detected six pharmaceuticals (caffeine, ibuprofen, paracetamol, lidoc
