Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a malformation characterized by defects in the ventral abdominal wall, lower sternum, diaphragmatic pericardium, anterior diaphragm associated with omphalocele, thoraco-abdominal ectopia cordis, diaphragmatic hernia, and intracardiac abnormalities. PC is stratified as complete or incomplete and we present both the complete and incomplete forms.

Cantrell's pentalogy is a very rare congenital anomaly. The hallmark of this condition is the presence of ectopia cordis and an abdominal wall defect. Its association with craniorachischisis is even more infrequent with just a few cases reported in the literature. The authors describe a case of a prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of Cantrell's pentalogy with posterior encephalocele and spinal dysraphism associated.

Cantrell's pentalogy is a congenital multiple malformation consisting of midline supraumbilical thoraco-abdominal wall defects, anterior and pericardial diaphragm defects, lower sternum defects, ectopia cordis and various intracardiac anomalies. Complete pentalogy is very rare. Some additional anomalies may accompany pentalogy and there are cases in the literature where chromosomal anomalies and pentalogy are seen. Cases of Cantrell's pentalogy in twin pregnancies are rare. Twin pregnancies with Cantrell's pentalogy in both fetuses are one of the rarest cases in the literature. In this study,

UNLABELLED: Cantrell's pentalogy is a rare multiple malformation syndrome consisting of supraumbilical abdominal wall defect, sternal defect, pericardial defect, anterior diaphragmatic defect and heart malformation.
AIMS AND METHODS: Prenatal ultrasound findings and malformations described during autopsy of the Cantrell's pentalogy cases diagnosed between January 1991 and June 2009 in our institute were reviewed. A literature research was conducted to analyze the prevalence and prenatal detection rate of the five previously described malformations and ectopia cordis in the Cantrell's pentalog

Development of the sternum during the growth of the embryo is described. Anterior body wall defects in the thoracic region may be severe, leading to ectopia cordis, or mild, as in skin-covered sternal clefts. The embryologic basis for other sternal abnormalities, such as pectus excavatum and pectus carniatum, is not clear; however, abnormalities of rib morphogenesis and growth are the most likely causes.

This paper describes the morphopathological aspects of a case of multiple cardiac malformations in a calf. A two-day-old male calf of undefined breed was born with an ectopic heart, presenting with dyspnoea and in lateral recumbency. The owner had repositioned the exposed heart beneath the adjacent skin, which was suclosed, without additional incisions or suturing of the heart or pericardial sac. The animal died the following day and was submitted for necropsy. Macroscopically, the heart was observed to be ventrally pendulous, covered by the pericardial sac, external to the thoracic cavity, wi

An approximately 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented for postmortem examination after dying without premonitory signs at the owner's home. The bird had a recent history of a grade II/VI left-sided systolic murmur, feather-destructive behavior, was overweight, and had bilateral cataracts. Gross and microscopic postmortem examinations revealed a subaortic interventricular septal saccular defect most compatible with a diverticulum intimately associated with a multifocally fibrotic right coronary aortic semilunar cusp, and its distended sinus. The resulting congestive

Many congenital defects of the ventral thoracoabdominal wall have been described. Among the most severe of these malformations are ectopia cordis, omphalocele, and vesicointestinal fissure. The simultaneous occurrence of all three of these anomalies has not been previously reported. We have recently seen an infant with an extensive anomaly combining these three defects of the ventral wall. The case is more remarkable because the infant's twin was normal.

Developmental anomalies are an important cause of stillbirth and early perinatal death in companion animals. Many of these disorders remain poorly understood and provide an opportunity as a spontaneous animal model for human disease. Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital syndrome described in human neonates. It is a ventral midline closure defect with a proposed familial inheritance in humans. This syndrome involves five defects, including the thoracoabdominal wall, sternal, diaphragmatic, pericardial and cardiac malformations. Diverse expressions of these defects have been described in h

Ventral body wall defects include ectopia cordis, bladder exstrophy, and the abdominal wall malformations gastroschisis and omphalocele. The etiology of ectopia cordis, gastroschisis, and bladder exstrophy is not known, but they may be linked to abnormalities in the lateral body wall folds responsible for closing the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic portions of the ventral body wall. These folds form in the fourth week (postfertilization) of development as a combination of the parietal layer of lateral plate mesoderm and overlying ectoderm and must move ventrally to meet in the midline. There a

Pentalogy of Cantrell is an extremely rare and lethal syndrome. Ectopia cordis is frequently found in fetuses with POC but not required for incomplete forms. Likewise, meningomyelocele is a relatively uncommon neural tube defect affecting central nervous system and associated with neurological problems. Herein, we presented a woman with dizygotic twin pregnancy having coincidence of incomplete POC and MMC in each individual fetus, which has never been reported previously.

Separation of thoracopagus conjoined twins with a single heart and the twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence yielded a single surviving infant with a protuberant heart covered by ribs and soft tissue from the nonsurviving twin. At 13 months of age, the heart was relocated in the chest after caudal mobilization of the diaphragms. The protective tissue cage was removed and a normal chest contour established. This technique also may be useful in the treatment of thoracic ectopia cordis.

CD-1 mice were exposed to baseline gasoline vapor condensate (BGVC) alone or to vapors of gasoline blended with methyl tertiary butyl ether (G/MTBE). Inhalation exposures were 6h/d on GD 5-17 at levels of 0, 2000, 10,000, and 20,000mg/m(3). Dams were evaluated for evidence of maternal toxicity, and fetuses were weighed, sexed, and evaluated for external, visceral, and skeletal anomalies. Exposure to 20,000mg/m(3) of BGVC produced slight reductions in maternal body weight/gain and decreased fetal body weight. G/MTBE exposure did not produce statistically significant maternal or developmental ef

We present the first trimester prenatal ultrasonography and pathological assessment of a case diagnosed with limb-body wall complex (LBWC) presenting both exenchephaly and a complex thoraco-abdominal wall defect. Ectopia cordis is demonstrated with a movie showing the heart beating outside the body of the fetus after its expulsion. Also, we discuss the pathogenesis and possible etiology of LBWC and associated malformations and we provide an update of the literature of this very rare anomaly.

A 34-week stillborn infant had omphalocele, agenesis of the sternum and anterior rib cage, membranous diaphragms with eventration of the viscera, ectopia cordis with absence of the pericardium, and congenital heart defect. These findings are consistent with a diagnosis of Cantrell pentalogy. The presence of bilateral clubfeet, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, abnormal ears, and horseshoe kidneys suggested a chromosome abnormality. Chromosome analysis showed trisomy 18. Individuals with manifestations of Cantrell pentalogy deserve cytogenetic evaluation.

Diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis is a rare, frequently fatal disease characterized by multiple cutaneous and visceral hemangiomas. The skin, liver, lungs, intestines, and central nervous system are the most commonly affected organs. Death can result from high-output cardiac failure as a result of arteriovenous shunting. In this report we present a new constellation of findings in a patient with diffuse neonatal hemangiomatosis, namely, an absent corpus callosum, ectopia cordis (sternal agenesis) with median abdominal raphe, and tricuspid atresia.

The prenatal diagnosis of a complete cleft sternum was established in a fetus of a twin pregnancy at 22 weeks' gestation. We present the prenatal imaging and correlation with postnatal magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution ultrasonography. Thinned and depressed midline anterior chest wall transmitting the cardiac pulsation was the clue to the diagnosis, and the defective sternum could be identified on close sonographic observation. Successful surgical correction was undertaken at 2 months of age. There were no major associated abnormalities such as ectopia cordis or midline abdominal

A case of cranioraschischisis including incomplete pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is described. The female fetus had a large omphalocele with evisceration of the heart, left lung, liver, stomach, and intestines accompanying anencephaly, cervical, thoracal lumbar, spina bifida. The fetus had ectopia cordis and diaphragmatic agenesia with an intact sternum. We present a case of a neonate with the stigmata for PC with the exception of a sternal defect. A literature review is also included. Sonographers should check for ventral and dorsal anomalies with PC because they may occur simultaneously.

A congenital midline cervical cleft (CMCC) is a rare developmental anomaly. It may represent failure of the branchial arches to fuse in the midline and presents at birth with a ventral midline defect of the skin of the neck. Congenital heart disease along with CMCC is rarer, and most of the cases reported are associated with chest wall defects or thoracic ectopia cordis. The authors report a case of a 5-month-old girl with CMCC and an atrial septal defect (ASD) and discuss the clinical presentation, embryologic development, and treatment.

We report a case of Cantrell's pentalogy with exencephaly detected by sonography at 11 weeks 4 days' menstrual age and confirmed at autopsy. Cantrell's pentalogy consists of defects of the lower sternum, anterior diaphragm, midline supraumbilical abdominal wall, and diaphragmatic pericardium with ectopia cordis. Exencephaly involves acrania with a disorganized mass of brain tissue. Both conditions are rare; the combination of the 2 has been reported only twice before. To our knowledge, this is the earliest reported diagnosis of the 2 conditions by prenatal sonography.
