Development and Implementation of a Basic Veterinary Ultrasound Curriculum.

Diagnostic ultrasound is an important imaging modality in veterinary medicine. Surveys of veterinarians suggest that ultrasound is a desired clinical competence and that new graduates are expected to practice basic ultrasound skills. This report describes the development and implementation of a basic ultrasound training program in the core curriculum at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine (ISU-CVM). A multidisciplinary team of ISU-CVM faculty created and delivered a basic ultrasound training program consisting of two lectures and two hands-on laboratories incorporated into a s

Development and Validation of a Bovine Castration Model and Rubric.

Veterinary students require deliberate practice to reach competence in surgical bovine castration, but animal availability limits opportunities for practice. We sought to create and validate a surgical bovine castration model consisting of a molded silicone scrotum and testicles to allow students to practice this skill without the use of live animals. We sought to validate the model and associated scoring rubric for use in a veterinary clinical skills course. A convenience sample of third-year veterinary students (n = 19) who had never castrated a bovine were randomized into two groups. The tr

Assessment of an Educational Intervention on the Knowledge and Attitudes of Indian National Veterinarians to Animal Welfare and Euthanasia.

The teaching of animal welfare in Indian veterinary education is limited. Current knowledge and attitudes to animal welfare and euthanasia, and the effect of a targeted educational intervention, were assessed in 84 Indian national and 49 non-Indian veterinarians attending a 2-week training course run by the Worldwide Veterinary Service in Tamil Nadu. A pre-intervention questionnaire, comprising knowledge and attitude questions on animal welfare and ethical issues, was completed. Fifteen students were then retained as a control group. The intervention group was exposed to a predesigned lecture

Veterinary support staff knowledge and perceptions of antimicrobial drug use, resistance, and stewardship in the United States.

Antimicrobial drug use (AMU) in veterinary medicine may contribute to antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections in both animals and people. Efforts to improve AMU in companion animal medicine are underway and should include all members of the veterinary team, including veterinary support staff. Our objective was to describe knowledge and attitudes regarding AMU, AMR, and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in companion animal medicine among veterinary support staff professionals in the United States using an anonymous, online questionnaire. Additionally, we sought to explore veterinary support staf

Case-based learning enhances clinical competencies in Thai veterinary students: a mixed-methods approach.

IMPORTANCE: Case-based learning (CBL) represents a promising shift toward competency-based veterinary education, but the evidence from Southeast Asian programs is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated veterinary students' perceptions of structured CBL effectiveness in Thai veterinary education and whether these perceptions varied with academic performance. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kasetsart University. Quantitative data were collected from 318 students (88.3% response rate) using a structured 22-item questionnaire

Development and Evaluation of Two Canine Low-Fidelity Simulation Models.

Two self-made low-fidelity models for simulation of canine intubation and canine female urinary catheterization were developed and evaluated. We used a study design that compares acquired skills of two intervention groups and one control group in a practical examination. Fifty-eight second-year veterinary medicine students received a theoretical introduction to intubation and were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (high-fidelity) was then trained on a commercially available Intubation Training Manikin (item #2006, Veteffects), group II (low-fidelity) was trained on our low-fidelity m

The Impact of Low-Fidelity Three-Dimensional-Printed Models of the Equine Distal Limb and the Canine Forelimb in Teaching Veterinary Anatomy in Practical Classes.

Limited cadaver availability and health risks from formaldehyde-treated cadavers have increased the need for alternative learning materials in veterinary anatomy education. Two studies were conducted to investigate whether low-fidelity 3D-printed models provide comparable learning outcomes to real specimens. In study 1, veterinary students were assigned to two groups to study the equine distal limb on a real specimen (n = 67) or a 3D model (n = 68). In study 2, students were divided into four groups to study the canine forelimb on a real specimen (n = 44), a 3D model (n = 45), a 3D model follo

Outcomes Assessment in Professional Programs: Audit of Competency Assessment and the Impact of Reasonable Adjustments on Veterinary Medicine Students' Attainment at the University of Glasgow.

Recent analysis of UK higher education found a 90% increase in students with disabilities. These students are eligible to receive reasonable adjustments (RAs) during examinations. However, research on the impact of RAs on veterinary Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) remains limited. This highlights the necessity to assess current practices of RAs in veterinary education to ensure examinations are equitable and accessible. This audit evaluated RAs in OSCEs at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School from 2018 to 2024. It analyzed the performance of students with RAs compared

An Investigation into Equine Nutrition Knowledge and Educational Needs of Equine Veterinarians.

This study investigated equine nutrition knowledge and educational needs of licensed veterinarians in the United States who were exclusively or predominately equine practitioners. It found veterinarians regard their peers as an important resource of nutritional knowledge, ranking ahead of all other sources except a PhD equine nutritionist. Interestingly, only 21% of veterinarians felt good about their knowledge level in equine nutrition after graduating from veterinary school. Although veterinarians in this study reported equine nutrition to be an area of weakness, 75% had not pursued continui

Control and prevention of emerging zoonoses.

Emerging and re-emerging zoonoses are zoonotic diseases caused by either totally new or partially new agents or by microorganisms previously known but now occurring in places or in species where the disease was previously unknown. Zoonotic diseases account for the majority of all emerging infectious diseases. Several factors have led to the emergence of these infections, including human demographics, the industrialization of food production, globalization, international travel and commerce, land use, microbial adaptation, and changes and breakdown in public health measures. Several zoonotic ag
