Difficulty in writing Japanese semantic characters in a 9-year-old boy with Williams syndrome.

A 9-year-old boy diagnosed as having Williams syndrome was evaluated using psychological test batteries in order to clarify his ability in language and visual cognition. The subject had difficulty in writing some of the Japanese semantic characters (called Kanji) which he could otherwise read and understand. Although he could write the small components of which the Kanji characters were composed, he could not locate these correctly. This phenomenon is considered to be very similar to the difficulty in copying a figure observed clinically. The Kaufmann Assessment Batteries for Children clearly

A comparison of two approaches for identifying reinforcers for persons with severe and profound disabilities.

The development of effective training programs for persons with profound mental retardation remains one of the greatest challenges for behavior analysts working in the field of developmental disabilities. One significant advancement for this population has been the reinforcer assessment procedure developed by Pace, Ivancic, Edwards, Iwata, and Page (1985), which involves repeatedly presenting a variety of stimuli to the client and then measuring approach behaviors to differentiate preferred from nonpreferred stimuli. One potential limitation of this procedure is that some clients consistently

A comparison of the Task Demonstration Model and the Standard Prompting Hierarchy in teaching word identification to persons with moderate retardation.

Six persons with moderate mental retardation were taught to identify three words by each of two different procedures. One, the Task Demonstration Model, was a fading procedure which relied on presenting many examples of both the correct and incorrect words while systematically increasing their similarity. The other, the Standard Prompting Hierarchy, is one of the most common procedures for teaching persons with mental retardation, and relied on a least-to-most intrusive prompting hierarchy. Data were presented in three phases and show that the Task Demonstration Model produced fewer errors in

A test of the response deprivation hypothesis in a multiple-response context.

Reinforcement contingencies defined by the response deprivation hypothesis were evaluated in two multiple-response contexts. In one context a high probability response was freely available, and in the other context a low probability response was freely available. In the presence of the low probability, freely available response, a consistent reinforcement effect was evident for all 3 moderately mentally retarded participants; however, in the presence of the high probability response, the reinforcement effect was attenuated. Results were qualitatively consistent with several recent mathematical

Saudi teachers' attitudes toward community-based vocational instruction for secondary students with intellectual disabilities.

Community-Based Vocational Instruction (CBVI) offers students with intellectual disabilities (ID) authentic, work-site learning experiences that support meaningful employment and social inclusion. This national survey examined the attitudes of Saudi secondary special-education teachers toward CBVI and the demographic, institutional, and regional factors influencing their perspectives. Data were collected from 139 teachers (response rate = 38.6 %). Teachers expressed strongly positive attitudes overall (M = 4.44, SD = 0.38), with female teachers reporting significantly higher scores than males

Views of parents and advocates on embedding inclusive practices within higher education for people with intellectual disability in the Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Higher education institutions aim to provide access to individuals with intellectual disability, yet the numbers remain small. Developing inclusive learning environments is a complex process, with parents and advocates playing vital roles in identifying barriers and solutions. This study explores their perspectives on embedding inclusive practices in higher education in the Republic of Ireland. METHOD: A qualitative design was employed, utilising focus group interviews and purposive sampling to gather in-depth insights. RESULTS: Thematic analysis identified three key themes: (i)

A study of expressed emotion in the parental primary carers of adolescents with intellectual impairment.

Expressed emotion (EE) was measured in the parental primary carer (carer) of 92 adolescents with intellectual impairment to examine its associated characteristics. High EE was mainly a result of high levels of emotional overinvolvement. High EE was associated with psychological illhealth, poor-quality marriage and poor practical social support of the carer, and psychiatric disorder in the adolescent with intellectual impairment. This suggests that EE may be a useful indicator of coping difficulties in these families. The subgroup of high EE emotional overinvolvement was associated with a carer

Impact of Educational Placement on the Goal Attainment Outcomes of K-6 Students With Complex Needs Across Academic and Social-Behavioral-Communication Domains.

Students with complex support needs have intense and frequent support needs for learning and participating across multiple domains. Addressing those needs in a comprehensive manner is the purpose of special education, which is accomplished through instructional and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Yet simply setting goals is insufficient; to facilitate positive student outcomes, there is an inherent expectation that students will meet those goals to achieve their potential. Understanding factors that impact variability in goal attainment is essential to this purpose. This includes

Teaching parents with mental retardation: knowledge versus skills.

An educational program for parents (N = 5) with mild mental retardation was evaluated to assess whether knowledge gains resulted in corresponding skill acquisition. Generalization of parenting skills to the home environment following behavioral skills training procedures was also examined. Parenting knowledge was assessed as subjects responded to descriptions of parenting situations. Parenting skills were assessed in home observations. Following baseline, a knowledge training procedure was implemented in a small group format. A behavioral skills training procedure was then implemented in a sma

Reading instruction for students with moderate mental retardation: review and analysis of research.

Three areas of research on reading instruction for children with moderate mental retardation were reviewed: sight-word instruction, word-analysis instruction, and oral reading error-correction. The research indicates that (a) among the sight-word instruction methods, those that use picture integration, constant delay, and the Edmark errorless discrimination methods seem strongest; (b) word-analysis instruction is a viable option for many students with moderate mental retardation; and (c) word analysis is the most effective method of oral reading-error correction.
