Object motion perception during ego-motion: patients with a complete loss of vestibular function vs. normals.

Object motion perception was assessed in avestibular patients and normal controls. Two experiments were conducted, in which subjects were required to assess the motion of a visual stimulus with respect to earth. In the first experiment, we measured the velocity at which a briefly presented (200 ms) grating was perceived as earth fixed, while the subject maintained fixation on a visual target fixed relative to the body, during whole-body yaw rotation (VOR suppression). In this experimental setup, the influence of the semicircular canal signals on object motion perception was evaluated. The aves

Evaluating ego defense mechanisms using clinical interviews: an empirical study of adolescent diabetic and psychiatric patients.

Ego defense mechanisms were studied in three groups of early adolescents: diabetic patients, non-psychotic psychiatric patients, and healthy high school students. Defenses were assessed from ratings of open-ended, in-depth interviews. High levels of denial and low levels of asceticism were found in all three groups. Comparisons between groups indicated that psychiatric patients had a distinctive profile of defense usage, in comparison to adolescents from the other two groups. An independent measure of ego development was positively correlated with the defenses of altruism, intellectualization,

The phenomenological structure of drug-induced ego states. II. Barbiturates and sedative-hypnotics: phenomenology and implications.

Empirically derived descriptions of experiential states, induced by heavy, chronic consumption of drugs, provide valuable information for treatment personnel as well as for scientists studying drug abuse or pharmacology. A 7-year program of research has studied persons committed to heavy, long-term use of several prominent substances of abuse. This report results from that research and provides a phenomenological description of the psychological state induced by heavy, chronic use of barbiturates and sedative-hypnotics. Interview, Q-sort and semantic differential data indicate the barbiturate

Ego development and self-image complexity in early adolescence. Longitudinal studies of psychiatric and diabetic patients.

Ego development and multiple self-images were studied in nonpsychotic psychiatric patients, diabetic patients, and healthy high school students. The results reported are drawn from the first year of a four-year longitudinal project investigating the psychosocial development and family interactions of impaired and at-risk adolescents. Both groups of patients, especially the psychiatric group, were significantly lower in their ego development and showed less self-image complexity than the high school students. These findings are discussed both in terms of understanding developmental deviation in

Fragile Egos and Broken Hearts: Narcissistic and Borderline Personality Traits Predict Reactions to Potential Infidelity.

We examined the connections that narcissistic and borderline personality traits had with hypothetical responses to romantic infidelity in a sample of Israeli community members (N = 997). We distinguished between four forms of narcissism: extraverted narcissism (characterized by assertive self-enhancement), antagonistic narcissism (characterized by defensiveness and hostility), neurotic narcissism (characterized by emotional distress), and communal narcissism (characterized by attempts to emphasize superiority over others by exaggerating communal characteristics such as being extraordinarily he

The indirect effect of generativity on fear of death through ego-integrity holds when controlling for spirituality.

In previous research on the indirect effect of generativity on fear of death through ego-integrity, intrinsic religiosity was controlled for. This paper tests the same indirect effect, but controls for spirituality instead of religiosity. German adults (N = 154) were administered self-report questionnaires on generativity, ego-integrity, fear of death, spirituality, and physical health. Spirituality correlated negatively with fear of death. A mediation analysis yielded the hypothesized indirect effect without spirituality significantly predicting fear of death. The present results indicate tha

Preserving a sense of wonder: the integration of an ego-supportive psychodynamic approach to supervision in an AIDS psychiatry fellowship.

The challenges of working with medically and mentally ill persons with a paucity of resources, inadequate networks of social support, and multiple stresses and losses maybe daunting to even the most seasoned of caregivers. A psychiatric trainee may be overwhelmed by the despair, sorrow, and desperation en-countered in the day-to-day care of the complex severely ill patient with lethalmedical and lethal psychiatric diagnoses. Individuals who are infected with HIV and hepatitis C, who are polysubstance users, and who are benzodiazepine dependent present with inordinate demands for prescribed sub

Academic stress and depressive mood in medical students: A serial mediation model via rumination and ego depletion.

Given the growing mental health challenges in medical education, this study examined the mechanisms linking academic stress to depressive mood in 484 medical students, focusing on serial mediation by rumination and ego depletion. Using validated scales, we found that academic stress is positively related to depressive mood, with rumination and ego depletion serving as mediators. Structural equation modeling further indicated that academic stress can exacerbate the occurrence of depressive mood through a serial mediated pattern of rumination and ego depletion. The total indirect effect explaine

Ego depletion does not negatively impact novice sprinters' start performance during a timed 20m all-out sprint.

Temporary reductions in self-control due to previous cognitive effort, also known as 'ego depletion', have been shown to negatively impact performance in subsequent tasks requiring self-control. Various theoretical accounts suggest that high levels of task motivation may prevent negative behavioural effects of ego depletion. Against this background, the current study performed a conceptual replication of a previous study examining the effects of ego depletion on sprint start performance (i.e., Englert et al., 2015) and implemented additional monetary incentives to manipulate task motivation. Joan of Arc meets Mary Poppins: maternal re-nurturing approaches with male patients in Ego-State Therapy.

Many patients with posttraumatic fragmentation demonstrate a positive response to the corrective possibilities provided through Ego-State Therapy. However, full resolution of presenting symptoms may not occur for individuals with significant childhood histories of parental abuse and neglect without opposite sex, as well as same sex, re-nurturing interventions. This presentation emphasizes the use of maternal re-nurturing methods with men who struggle with the effects of significant attachment deficits in early life. Case examples feature male patients with long-term difficulties in their adult

The relationship between loneliness and internalizing disorders among young adults: the mediating and moderating role of ego-resilience.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between loneliness and internalizing disorders has been well established in psychological research. This study aims to build on existing research by exploring how different components of loneliness-isolation, relational connectedness, and collective connectedness-interact with ego-resilience to influence anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. METHODS: The study participants were young adults (n = 337) who completed the University of California-Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, Ego Resilience Scale, Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxie

Sub-acute and long-term effects of ayahuasca on affect and cognitive thinking style and their association with ego dissolution.

RATIONALE: Ayahuasca is a psychotropic plant tea from South America used for religious purposes by indigenous people of the Amazon. Increasing evidence indicates that ayahuasca may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of mental health disorders and can enhance mindfulness-related capacities. Most research so far has focused on acute and sub-acute effects of ayahuasca on mental health-related parameters and less on long-term effects. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to assess sub-acute and long-term effects of ayahuasca on well-being and cognitive thinking style. The second objective

The impact of cultural evolution on the ego ideal, depression, psychosis, and suicide: a South India community study of the widow.

Cultural factors have a significant impact on the manifestation of psychiatric illness and the development of the ego ideal. The evolution of the widow's cultural role in a South India village provides insight on the ego ideal through several generations. As treatment of widows changed so that their appearance became indistinguishable from other women, they no longer became objects of revulsion. A case study approach documents the interrelationship of changes in the cultural ego ideal on psychiatric illness among widows in a South India village over a period of more than four decades.

Automated scoring of adult ego development from sentence completions: interpretable maturity indicators derived by evolutionary prompt optimization.

INTRODUCTION: Ego Development Theory (EDT) describes systematic changes in how adults make meaning, but its principal measure, the Sentence Completion Test (SCT), requires resource-intensive expert scoring. METHODS: We developed an automated scoring approach in which an evolutionary algorithm derives a small set of interpretable maturity indicators, each scored from sentence-completion responses by a domain-fine-tuned language model; a classifier trained on the resulting scores then predicts developmental stage. Performance was evaluated on an expert-scored dataset never used for feature disc

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

Ego depletion, compensatory health beliefs, and healthy food choice in Chinese university students: a two-wave longitudinal study.

Healthy food choice often requires people to balance immediate reward against longer-term health considerations. The present study examined whether ego depletion and compensatory health beliefs (CHB) were associated with healthy food choice in a two-wave sample of Chinese university students. A total of 394 participants completed measures of ego depletion and CHB and a six-trial binary food-choice task at baseline and again 6 months later. Healthy choices were analyzed both at the trial level using a generalized linear mixed-effects model and at the total-score level using a linear mixed-effec
