A total of 650 ticks, including 13 species from five genera, were collected from animals, from people, or by flagging of the vegetation at sites on the Thai-Myanmar border and in Vietnam. They were tested by PCR to detect DNA of bacteria of the order RICKETTSIALES: Three Anaplasma spp. were detected in ticks collected in Thailand, including (i) Anaplasma sp. strain AnDa465, which was considered a genotype of Anaplasma platys (formerly Ehrlichia platys) and which was obtained from Dermacentor auratus ticks collected from dogs; (ii) Anaplasma sp. strain AnAj360, which was obtained from Amblyomma

Canine vector-borne pathogens are common on some Caribbean islands, but survey data in Haiti are lacking. To determine the prevalence of selected vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Haiti, we tested blood samples collected from 210 owned dogs, 28 (13.3%) of which were infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks at the time of blood collection. No other tick species were identified on these dogs. A commercially available ELISA identified antibodies to Ehrlichia spp. in 69 (32.9%), antibodies to Anaplasma spp. in 37 (17.6%), and antigen of Dirofilaria immitis in 55 (26.2%); antibodies to Borrel

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis typically presents with nonspecific cold-like symptoms and a history of recent tick exposure, often responding well to early treatment. Here, we present the case of a 67-year-old immunocompetent male who initially presented with fevers, chills, dysuria, and hematuria, leading to admission to the intensive care unit with septic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which was later attributed to Ehrlichia chaffeensis infection. Prompt treatment with doxycycline resulted in a full clinical recovery. This case highlights the rare occurrence of severe eh

In recent solid organ transplant recipients, acute febrile illness is usually a source of grave concern and a diagnostic dilemma, especially if no response is noted after initiation of broad antimicrobial therapy. Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) is a tick-borne illness caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis and is not considered an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients such as solid organ transplant patients. Ehrlichiosis in immunocompromised patients can be life-threatening, and a strong index of suspicion is needed, especially in patients who live in endemic areas, for proper tre

The population of the lone star tick Amblyomma americanum has expanded in North America over the last several decades. It is known to be an aggressive and nondiscriminatory biter and is by far the most common human-biting tick encountered in Virginia. Few studies of human pathogen prevalence in ticks have been conducted in our state since the mid-twentieth century. We developed a six-plex real-time PCR assay to detect three Ehrlichia species (E. chaffeensis, E. ewingii, and Panola Mountain Ehrlichia) and three spotted fever group Rickettsiae (SFGR; R. amblyommii, R. parkeri, and R. rickettsii)

Medical records of 3 dogs from North Carolina and 3 dogs from Virginia with ehrlichial morulae in circulating neutrophils were studied retrospectively. Two clinically distinct disease syndromes, including chronic, moderate to severe anemia (n = 3) and polyarthritis (n = 2) were associated with canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis (CGE) in these dogs. One dog was clinically healthy, and abnormalities were not detected during physical examination. Clinical signs were nonspecific and included fever, lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. The most frequent laboratory abnormalities were normocytic

Fever of unknown origin and the clinical picture of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) are diagnostic challenges in the early period after kidney transplantation. Here, we report a case of human monocytic ehrlichiosis in a renal allograft recipient who presented with fever and clinical picture of TMA in the first month post-kidney transplant. Despite broad coverage with multiple antimicrobial agents, fever and hematological abnormalities persisted for several days. A history of contact exposure and living in an endemic area raised clinical suspicion for human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), and em

Dermacentor ticks are widespread in eastern Washington and are known vectors of bacterial pathogens and harborers of endosymbionts belonging to the genera Francisella and Rickettsia. Some Dermacentor species can become infected with Ehrlichia chaffeensis Anderson et al. (Rickettsiales: Ehrlichiaceae); it remains unclear if any are competent vectors for this bacterial pathogen. This study reports the abundance of Dermacentor species and prevalence of select tick-borne bacterial pathogens collected from two conservation areas popular among hikers in Spokane County, Washington. In total, DNA from

Human ehrlichiosis is a zoonotic disease, caused by a rickettsia that infects leukocytes. It was described for the first time in the United States of America in 1986. More than 300 cases have been reported in that country. One case has been reported in Portugal, two in France and one more in a tourist coming from Mali (Africa). In Venezuela, a tropical country, where ehrlichiosis is endemic in dogs and horses, the first case of human ehrlichiosis is reported in a seventeen month old girl. She initially had symptoms compatible with a viral illness. Then she developed a rash, acute respiratory f

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important ectoparasites for both humans and animals and can also transmit a wide range of different viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens, which are commonly known as "tick-borne pathogens" (TBPs). In Zambia (Southern Africa), a number of studies have been conducted on TBPs, but information on their distribution and genetic variation is still incomplete.
METHODS: Between 2022 and 2023, 588 ticks were collected in 3 provinces from the environment/vegetation via flagging as well as from cattle and wild host species (buffaloes and tortoises). After tick species identifi

We describe the concordance among results from various laboratory tests using samples derived from nine culture-proven cases of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis. A class-specific indirect immunofluorescence assay for immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG, using E. chaffeensis antigen, identified 44 and 33% of the isolation-confirmed HME patients on the basis of samples obtained at initial clinical presentation, respectively; detection of morulae in blood smears was similarly insensitive (22% positive). PCR amplifications of ehrlichial DNA targeting the 16S rRNA gene,

Ehrlichia and Anaplasma are important tick-borne obligate intracellular bacteria that cause clinically and economically significant infections in humans and animals. Despite their importance, vaccine development for these pathogens remains limited, and the overall progression of vaccine-related research in this field has not been quantitatively characterized. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis to characterize the trajectory and the research landscape of vaccine-related research for these pathogens. The literature was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collect

A 66-year-old immunocompetent man with preceding travel through the Northeastern United States developed Guillain-Barré syndrome. A broad search for infections revealed intraerythrocytic parasites on blood smear and positive polymerase chain reaction for Babesia microti; elevated IgM/IgG serologies for Ehrlichia chaffeensis; elevated IgM/IgG serologies and qualitative polymerase chain reaction for Epstein-Barr virus; and fecal culture growth of Arcobacter butzleri. In this report, we discuss the known or suspected association of these infectious agents with Guillain-Barré syndrome. This case a

Two men from northwestern Missouri independently presented to a medical facility with fever, fatigue, diarrhea, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia, and both had been bitten by ticks 5 to 7 days before the onset of illness. Ehrlichia chaffeensis was suspected as the causal agent but was not found on serologic analysis, polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assay, or cell culture. Electron microscopy revealed viruses consistent with members of the Bunyaviridae family. Next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic analysis identified the viruses as novel members of the phlebovirus genus. Although Koch's po

Indirect fluorescent-antibody (IFA) staining methods with Ehrlichia equi (MRK or BDS strains) and Western blot analyses containing a human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent (NCH-1 strain) were used to confirm probable human cases of infection in Connecticut during 1995 and 1996. Also included were other tests for Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), Babesia microti, and Borrelia burgdorferi. Thirty-three (8.8%) of 375 patients who had fever accompanied by marked leukopenia or thrombocytopenia were serologically confirmed as having HGE. Western blot analys

Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial zoonosis, spread through the bites of infected ticks, that is most commonly caused in the United States by infection with the bacterium Ehrlichia chaffeensis. We retrospectively reviewed samples from an 18-month study of ehrlichiosis in the United States and found that E. ewingii was present in 10 (9.2%) of 109 case-patients with ehrlichiosis, a higher rate of infection with this species than had previously been reported. Two patients resided in New Jersey and Indiana, where cases have not been reported. All patients with available case histories recovered. Our stud

Workers in food processing industries are subject to many occupational health risks and disparities, but little is known about their risk of tickborne diseases. We examined a cohort of Latino individuals working in the meat packing, produce processing, and farming industries and their family members in central North Carolina, where incidence of tickborne infections is high. Blood samples were tested for IgG antibodies against Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis (SFGR) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Covariates of interest included age, sex, primary language, work industry, indoor vs. outdoor work, ho

Trypanosoma cruzi is an emerging zoonotic vector-borne parasite infecting dogs and other mammals in the United States. In this study we evaluated shelter dogs in one northeastern and one southeastern county in Oklahoma for prevalence of exposure to T. cruzi. Dogs were tested for antibodies against T. cruzi using the Chagas STAT PAK® assay and for T. cruzi in circulation by PCR. In addition, dogs were tested for evidence of infection with other vector-borne organisms using the SNAP® 4Dx® Plus Test and PCR. Overall, 26 of 197 (13.2%) shelter dogs had detectable antibodies against T. cruzi and 3

Ixodes scapularis, the blacklegged tick, is capable of transmitting the pathogens that cause Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), babesiosis (Babesia microti), anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum), and to a lesser extent Powassan encephalitis (deer tick virus [DTV]). These pathogens represent significant public health problems, but little is known about the occurrence and co-infection prevalence of these pathogens in I. scapularis. Here, we used standard PCR and pathogen-specific primers to estimate the prevalence of infection of A. phagocytophilium, B. burgdorferi, B. microti, and Ehrlich
