Sensitivity Assessment of Macroscopic Mechanical Responses of Cemented Sand and Gravel to Mesoscopic Parameters Using an Improved MULTIMOORA Method.

The macroscopic mechanical responses of cemented sand and gravel (CSG) are jointly affected by the mesoscopic properties of the aggregate, mortar matrix, and interfacial transition zone, while different parameters exhibit distinct magnitudes and directions of influence on strength, stiffness, and failure deformation. To establish a unified parameter priority across multiple macroscopic responses, a two-dimensional random aggregate finite element model was developed, and the elastic moduli and tensile strengths of the aggregate, mortar matrix, and interface were selected as six mesoscopic param

Nondestructive measurement of anterior cerebral artery stiffness using optical coherence elastography.

Cerebrovascular dysfunction is associated with aging and the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Optical coherence elastography (OCE) is an emerging technique for measuring the stiffness of arteries nondestructively with high spatial resolution. In this study, we employed wave-based OCE to measure the shear modulus of human anterior cerebral arteries (ACA). Surface elastic waves were excited on ACA across a wide frequency range (2 to 100 kHz), at intra-vessel pressures ranging from 20 to 140 mmHg. Lamb wave theory was applied to analyze the propagation speeds of dispersive elastic waves

An extended modeling of the micropipette aspiration experiment for the characterization of the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of adherent thin biological samples: numerical and experimental studies.

The micropipette aspiration (MA) experiment remains a quite widely used micromanipulation technique for quantifying the elastic modulus of cells and, less frequently, of other biological samples. However, moduli estimations derived from MA experiments are only valid if the probed sample is non-adherent to the rigid substrate. This study extends this standard formulation by taking into account the influence of the sample adhesion. Using a finite element analysis of the sample aspiration into the micropipette, we derived a new expression of the aspirated length for linear elastic materials. Our

Mechanisms of aortic valve incompetence: finite-element modeling of Marfan syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Progressive aortic root dilatation and an increased aortic root elastic modulus have been documented in persons with Marfan syndrome. To examine the effect of aortic root dilatation and increased elastic modulus on leaflet stress, strain, and coaptation, we used a finite-element model. METHODS: The normal model incorporated the geometry, tissue thickness, and anisotropic elastic moduli of normal human roots and valves. Four Marfan models were evaluated, in which the diameter of the aortic root was dilated by 5%, 15%, 30%, and 50%. Aortic root elastic modulus in the 4 Marfan models

Functional effects of the spatial-varying lens mechanical properties in accommodation.

Lens biomechanical properties are critical for our eyes to accommodate. While it is well understood that lens mechanical properties change with age, different experimental techniques have been used over the years, with varying results on how the lens modulus changes. In this study, we developed a spatial-varying elasticity model to characterize the overall elastic modulus of the lens and establish its effect on accommodation. First, to validate the model, ex vivo porcine lenses underwent compression testing using biopsy punches of different diameters to change the percentage of nucleus within

The Geometric Dependence of Wave Velocity in Carotid Arteries: Phantom and Finite Element Study and Implications for Vascular "Shear Wave" Elastography.

OBJECTIVE: The intrinsic elasticity and the structural stiffness of blood vessels are widely regarded as important biomarkers for prediction of cardiovascular disease risk, the leading cause of death worldwide. Ultrasound-based shear wave elastography (SWE) has been used to measure these properties in several clinical studies. However, the geometric properties of blood vessels complicate the relationship between wave speed and elasticity in blood vessels compared to bulk tissue. Here we quantify these effects with a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) model and ultrasound experiments and dis

Design Optimization of Auxetic Composite Metamaterials Using Finite Element Simulations and Random Forest AI Models.

The development of biomaterials with tunable mechanical properties is important for addressing stiffness mismatch between implants and bone, although the present study focuses on computational material design rather than implant-level performance. In this work, a novel composite design is proposed in which a 3D re-entrant honeycomb auxetic fiber is incorporated within a solid matrix. A series of 670 finite element models was analyzed by systematically manipulating the elastic modulus ratio of fiber to matrix (Ef/Em, where Ef is the elastic modulus of the fiber and Em is the elastic modulus of

Why shear adhesion is not monotonically enhanced by stiffening.

Interfaces between dissimilar elastic materials are ubiquitous in biological and engineered systems and often span orders of magnitude in stiffness. Yet it remains unclear whether stiffening an adhesive system strengthens or weakens shear adhesion, as conflicting trends have been widely reported and the underlying physics has remained unresolved. Here we provide a mechanistic explanation by developing a unified framework for shear adhesion across broad modulus contrasts. We derive an analytical solution for a finite-height elastic adhesive bonded to an elastic substrate and validate the theory

The elastic properties of the tendinous and capsular layers of the rotator cuff complex using fresh tissue-a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Elastic modulus is an important biomechanical component that indicates stiffness or elasticity of biological material. Recently the use of digital image correlation (DIC) in elastic modulus studies on fresh tissue has shown great accuracy in estimating elastic properties; thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the elasticity of capsular and tendinous layers of the rotator cuff complex employing this method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and subscapularis from eight (n = 8) fresh/frozen tissue shoulders were reverse dissected from their origins. T

Quantitative Evaluation of In Vivo Corneal Biomechanical Properties after SMILE and FLEx Surgery by Acoustic Radiation Force Optical Coherence Elastography.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively evaluate the differences in corneal biomechanics after SMILE and FLEx surgery using an acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography system (ARF-OCE) and to analyze the effect of the corneal cap on the integrity of corneal biomechanical properties. A custom ring array ultrasound transducer is used to excite corneal tissue to produce Lamb waves. Depth-resolved elastic modulus images of the in vivo cornea after refractive surgery were obtained based on the phase velocity of the Lamb wave. After refractive surgery, the average elastic modul

Correlation of Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography with Pathological Analysis in a Xenografic Tumour Model.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential value of ultrasound (US) shear wave elastography (SWE) in assessing the relative change in elastic modulus in colorectal adenocarcinoma xenograft models in vivo and investigate any correlation with histological analysis. We sought to test whether non-invasive evaluation of tissue stiffness is indicative of pathological tumour changes and can be used to monitor therapeutic efficacy. US-SWE was performed in tumour xenografts in 15 NCr nude immunodeficient mice, which were treated with either the cytotoxic drug, Irinotecan, or saline as co

Elastic properties of human lens zonules as a function of age in presbyopes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the elastic properties of human lens zonules as a function of age in presbyopes. METHODS: We studied 16 presbyopic human donor eyes (ages 47-97). Anterior eye sections with crystalline lens, zonules, ciliary body, and sclera were stretched radially. The stretching device consisted of a chamber filled with balanced salt solution and eight radial hooks to hold the anterior eye section. Radial stretching was created with a stepper motor connected to a digital outside micrometer for linear displacement and digital balance for force measurement. Three eye globes were used t

SW-VEI-Net: A Physics-Informed Deep Neural Network for Shear Wave Viscoelasticity Imaging.

Quantitative viscoelasticity imaging via shear wave elastography (SWE) remains challenging due to complex wave physics and limitations of conventional reconstruction methods. To address this, we present SW-VEI-Net, a physics-informed neural network (PINN) that simultaneously reconstructs the shear elastic modulus and viscous modulus by integrating viscoelastic wave equations into a dual-network architecture. The framework employs a dual-loss function to balance data fidelity and physics-based regularization, significantly reducing reliance on empirical data while improving interpretability. Ex

Ascending aortic geometry and its relationship to the biomechanical properties of aortic tissue.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ascending aortic geometry and biomechanical properties. METHODS: Preoperative computed tomography scans from ascending aortic aneurysm patients were analyzed using a center line technique (n = 68). Aortic length was measured from annulus to innominate artery, and maximal diameter from this segment was recorded. Biaxial tensile testing of excised tissue was performed to derive biomechanical parameters energy loss (efficiency in performing the Windkessel function) and modulus of elasticity (stiffness). Single-Cell Photoacoustic Microrheology.

Rheological properties, such as elasticity and viscosity, are fundamental biomechanical parameters that are related to the function and pathological status of cells and tissues. In this paper, an innovative photoacoustic microrheology (PAMR), which utilized the time and phase characteristics of photoacoustic (PA) response, was proposed to extract elastic modulus and viscosity. The feasibility and accuracy of the method were validated by tissue-mimicking agar-gelatin phantoms with various viscoelasticity values. PAMR realized single cell elasticity and viscosity mappings on the adipocyte and my

Analysis of the sclera elasticity properties and comparison with corneal biomechanics properties in vivo and in vitro.

PURPOSE: To explore scleral elastic modulus and its correlation with corneal biomechanics in vivo and in vitro, and to introduce a predictive model for non-destructive characterization of scleral and corneal elastic modulus. METHODS: In vivo biomechanical parameters of 21 rabbit eyes were measured using the Corvis ST. Uniaxial tensile tests on corneal and scleral (anterior, equatorial, and posterior sections) strips provided low-strain and high-strain tangent elastic modulus (LSTM and HSTM). Pearson's and Spearman's correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship. A multivariate li

Energy evolution mechanism of structural surfaces in sandstones with different dips based on the energy principle.

A uniaxial compression test was conducted on sandstone specimens at various inclination angles to determine the energy evolution characteristics during deformation and damage. Based on the principle of minimum energy dissipation, an intrinsic model incorporating the damage threshold was developed to investigate the mechanical properties of sandstone at different inclination angles, and the energy damage evolution during deformation and damage. This study indicated that when the inclination angle of the structural surface remained below 40°, sandstone exhibited varying mechanical properties bas

Contributions of single-cell mechanics and cell-cell adhesion to multicellular spheroid mechanics.

Tumor spheroid mechanics arise from both the mechanical properties of individual cells and the adhesive interactions that organize them into tissues. The relative contribution of these two factors to the bulk mechanical behavior, however, remains difficult to disentangle experimentally. Here, we develop a computational model of micropipette aspiration to compare the mechanical response of isolated cells and multicellular spheroids within a common computational framework. By independently varying single-cell stiffness and cell-cell adhesion, we quantify their effects on aspiration dynamics, eff

Role of composition in fracture behavior of two-phase solids.

In a two-phase solid, we examine the growth of a preexisting macroscopic crack based on simulations of a random spring network model. We find that the enhancement in toughness, as well as strength, is strongly dependent on the ratio of elastic moduli as well as on the relative proportion of the phases. We find that the mechanism that leads to enhancement in toughness is not the same as that for enhancement in strength; however, the overall enhancement is similar in mode I and mixed-mode loading. Based on the crack paths, and the spread of the fracture process zone, we identify the type of frac
