A new instrument for serial measurements of elasticity in hypertrophic scar.

The "elastometer," a hand-held device, was designed and constructed to permit noninvasive quantification of the elastic properties of normal skin or hypertrophic scar. The instrument utilizes a constant-tension spring and a sensitive strain gauge to distract two loci of skin. Normal skin from 15 dogs was measured in vivo with the elastometer and in vitro using standard tensometry. The results correlated significantly by regression analysis (r = .87, p less than .01, 1/Young's Modulus of Elasticity v percent stretch in vivo). Normal dorsal hand skin was tested elastometrically in six volunteers

Force-, power-, and elasticity-velocity relationships in walking, running, and jumping.

Ground reaction forces and mechanical power were investigated when the subjects walked normally, while they were racing or running at four speeds, and when they performed the running long jump take-off. In addition, the apparent spring constants of the support leg in eccentric and concentric phases were investigated at the four running speeds, during the running long jump take-off, and in the triple jump. Six club level track and field athletes, four national level long jumpers, and six national level triple jumpers took part in the study. Cinematographic technique and a mathematical model of

Physiological elasticity and topography modulate in vitro prostate cancer cell behavior.

Tissue elasticity and microenvironment are a hallmark of cancer, particularly in prostate cancer. Here, we investigate, how physiologically relevant mechanical properties affect prostate cancer cells using 2D-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and topographic 2.5D-poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate hydrogel surfaces. Substrates reproducing the stiffness of tumor cell niches, altered cell morphology, metabolic activity, migration, cytokine expression, and therapeutic response. Elasticity-dependent effects included up to a 1.5-fold increase in LDH activity with concurrent cell pro

Pulse Doppler ultrasound measurement of central artery elasticity: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness, as a biomarker of cardiovascular diseases, is most often described by a surrogate global stiffness index, pulse pressure wave velocity (PWV), a measure of the time for pressure pulses to transit to sensors normally placed on different arteries. However, local arterial elasticity also influences the transient response of an artery to an impulse of flow, as characterized by the local pulsatile flow velocity waveform. Such transient response to pulsatile flow has not previously been analyzed as an indicator of arterial stiffness and a biomarker of cardiovascular di

Lamellar periodicity population redistribution and elasticity in sunflower wax-based oleogels.

The elasticity of sunflower wax (SFW)-based oleogels arises from the hierarchical organisation of their crystalline network. This study examines how cooling-rate-controlled crystallisation regulates elasticity through redistribution of coexisting lamellar periodicity populations. Small-angle X-ray diffraction reveals long- and slightly shorter-period lamellar components, while wide-angle X-ray diffraction confirms unchanged molecular packing, indicating no polymorphic transitions. The population of the slightly shorter-period component varies systematically with cooling rate. Peak broadening s

Moiré-induced modulation of out-of-plane elasticity in twisted hBN.

Moiré superlattices in twisted van der Waals materials provide a versatile platform where interlayer interactions generate periodic variations of atomic registry and local physical properties. Here, we reveal that these moiré patterns also modulate the effective out-of-plane elastic response of twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-hBN). Using contact-mode atomic force microscopy and force-spectroscopy nanomechanics, we show that the effective out-of-plane Young's modulus exhibits a reproducible modulation by up to 10% across a single moiré unit cell, with softer AA and saddle-point regions and s

Investigating plantar soft tissue elasticity modulation using air insoles during walking.

BACKGROUND: In the forefoot region, diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is more likely to develop due to elevated plantar pressure and repetitive loading. This study investigated the effects of different forefoot insole pressures and walking durations on the elasticity of the plantar tissue to identify conditions that may help prevent DFU. METHODS: With thirteen healthy participants, we conducted a controlled walking exercise at a speed of 3.6 mph on a treadmill, comparing three different inner pressures of 80, 160, and 240 mmHg with two different walking durations of 10 and 20 min. We measured the elas

Physically Crosslinked Conductive Organic Gel with Excellent Elasticity and Environmental Stability.

Liquid water in hydrogels exhibits an adsorption-desorption dynamic equilibrium with the surrounding environment, which leads to the instability of mechanical properties. To address this limitation, we propose an innovative design of conductive composite organogels by incorporating compatible linear lauryl alcohol (LA) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) network. Carbon chains of LAform physical crosslinks with PBMA side chains, effectively replacing inherent polymer chain entanglements. This structural innovation facilitates rapid chain rotation and

Elasticity-Driven Periodic Polarization Patterns in a Chiral Ferroelectric Nematic Fluid.

Ferroelectric nematic phases are a new class of polar fluids in which spontaneous polarization is directly coupled to the orientational order, providing unique opportunities for creating self-organized materials with spatially modulated electric polarization and nonlinear optical response. Here we report the spontaneous emergence of polarization-modulated textures in a chiral ferroelectric nematic material close to the transition to the chiral twist-bend ferroelectric nematic phase. By systematically varying cell thickness and surface anchoring conditions, we map the formation of these modulat

Evaluation of skeletal muscle elasticity using color Doppler shear wave imaging.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to (1) assess the precision and reproducibility of color Doppler shear wave imaging (CD SWI) by comparing it with shear wave elastography (SWE) via elasticity phantom measurements, and (2) investigate the potential clinical applications of CD SWI in the upper limb muscles by assessing the reproducibility of skeletal muscle elasticity evaluations. METHODS: Four elastography phantoms of different stiffness (6.0-7.5 wt%) were used to assess the precision and reproducibility of CD SWI (compared with SWE) at depths. Typical upper limb muscles of 24 men were also assessed

In situ assessment of lens elasticity with noncontact optical coherence elastography.

Lens biomechanics has great potential for application in clinical diagnostics and treatment monitoring of presbyopia and cataracts. However, current approaches to lens elastography do not meet the desired safety or sensitivity for clinical application. In this regard, we propose a noncontact optical coherence elastography (OCE) method to facilitate quantitative in situ imaging of lens elasticity. Elastic waves induced by air-pulse stimulation on the limbus propagate to the lens and are then imaged using custom-built swept-source optical coherence tomography to obtain the elastic wave velocity

Oral administration of resveratrol or lactic acid bacterium improves lens elasticity.

A decrease in the elasticity of the ocular lens during aging is associated with loss of the accommodative ability of the eye, leading to presbyopia. Although near vision impairment is a social issue affecting the length of healthy life expectancy and productivity of elderly people, an effective treatment to improve near vision has not yet become available. Here we examined the effect of Enterococcus faecium WB2000, Lactobacillus pentosus TJ515, and resveratrol on lens elasticity in rats, where the stiffness of the ocular lens increases exponentially during the aging process. A combination of W

Role of acoustic radiation force-based elasticity imaging in endometrium pathologies.

BACKROUND: Ultrasonography is difficult to distinguish between endometrial pathologies and often requires curettage. ARFI (Acoustic Radiation Force-Based Elasticity Imaging) is a new ultrasonography elastography method. Using ARFI, it is possible to obtain information about the likelihood of the tissue benign or malignant. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the contribution of ARFI to differentiate endometrial pathologies in hysterectomy specimens. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Our study was prospectively, January-May 2017, performed in randomly 45 cases of 41-91 years of age (mean 58.3 years

Estimation of Object Elasticity by Capturing Fingernail Images During Haptic Palpation.

In this study, we present a system that performs natural-touch-based elasticity estimation for an object by using a depth camera. To estimate elasticity, which is defined as an object's Young's modulus, a strain-stress curve is obtained from fingernail images during haptic palpation. From a color image, the proposed system detects a fingernail and extracts 10 feature values related to the contact force; then, it estimates the force using a multiple regression model. Deformation of the object was estimated from the finger's three-dimensional position obtained from both color and depth images. T

Validation of composite finite elements efficiently simulating elasticity of trabecular bone.

Patient-specific analyses of the mechanical properties of bones become increasingly important for the management of patients with osteoporosis. The potential of composite finite elements (CFEs), a novel FE technique, to assess the apparent stiffness of vertebral trabecular bone is investigated in this study. Segmented volumes of cylindrical specimens of trabecular bone are compared to measured volumes. Elasticity under uniaxial loading conditions is simulated; apparent stiffnesses are compared to experimentally determined values. Computational efficiency is assessed and recommendations for sim
