BACKGROUND: Mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) has traditionally been routine before pediatric intestinal surgery, based on the belief that it reduces the risk of infection. In adults, benefits are only observed when MBP is combined with oral antibiotics; however, evidence in pediatrics remains limited and inconsistent.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD420251133552) following PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane guidelines, searching databases up to August 2025. Eligible studies included Randomized controlled trials and comparative observational cohorts comparing M

Treacher Collins syndrome is an inherited disorder resulting in maldevelopment of the first and second branchial arches. Patients have complex orofacial anatomy often requiring airway interventions from birth. A 17-year-old boy with Treacher Collins syndrome and history of difficult ventilation and intubation presented for elective maxillofacial reconstruction. After uneventful awake nasal fiberoptic intubation, the nasotracheal tube was damaged intraoperatively. Due to the patient's unique anatomy, a fiberoptic bronchoscope and ventilating exchange catheter were utilized together to facilitat

Evaluation of the patient's medical history and a physical examination are the cornerstones of risk assessment prior to elective surgery and may help to optimize the patient's preoperative medical condition and to guide perioperative management. Whether the performance of additional technical tests (e.g. blood chemistry, ECG, spirometry, chest x-ray) can contribute to a reduction of perioperative risk is often not very well known or controversial. Similarly, there is considerable uncertainty among anaesthesiologists, internists and surgeons with respect to the perioperative management of the p

BACKGROUND: Strangulated and obstructed ventral hernias require emergent repair to mitigate the risk of life-threatening complications. Emergency ventral hernia repairs are associated with a higher rate of surgical complications and recurrence compared to elective repairs. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of patient factors, hernia and operative characteristics on post-operative outcomes in patients requiring emergency ventral hernia repairs.
METHODS: Data were collected from a prospectively held database on 86 consecutive patients undergoing emergency ventral hernia repair

INTRODUCTION: Patients having severe hemophilia (levels of deficient factor below 1%) frequently suffer from disabling chronic arthropathy. An adequate substitution treatment using the coagulation factor VIII or IX concentrates renders an elective surgery feasible.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to check the results of different surgical procedures in the treatment of hemophilic arthropathies, and to propose the best protocol of their treatment.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study on 26 hemophilic patients operated in the Orthopedics and Trauma Clinic II, Timişoara, from 2002 t

OBJECTIVE: To investigate surgical blood usage during the siege of Sarajevo.
METHODS: Data on blood usage and pre-transfusion hematocrit (Hct) values from blood transfusion request forms in 250 wartime emergency surgical procedures during August through October 1992 (experimental group), and in 146 peacetime elective surgical procedures (control group) during April through June 1991 at the State Hospital of Sarajevo, were reviewed.
RESULTS: The mean number of blood units transfused per patient (blood usage rate) was 1.13 in the experimental group versus 2.56 in the control group (p < 0.001).

BACKGROUND: Early mobilization is a significant part of the ERAS® Society guidelines, in which patients are recommended to spend 2 h out of bed on the day of surgery. However, it is not yet known how early patients can safely be mobilized after completion of colorectal surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, and safety of providing almost immediate structured supervised mobilization starting 30 min post-surgery at the postoperative anesthesia care unit (PACU), and to describe reactions to this approach.
METHODS: This feasibility study includes 42 patients aged ≥18 year

INTRODUCTION: The concept of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), also called fast-track surgery, is a complex of modern multimodal strategies intended to reduce the perioperative stress response and achieve faster postoperative rehabilitation and rapid recovery of normal physiologic functions. The effect of ERAS on reduction of length of stay and postoperative complications has been proven by randomized controlled trials. The recommendations are supported by substantial evidence, and they are guaranteed by the ERAS society and included in the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral

AIM: To analyze the current state of elective surgery for peptic ulcer and to assess its significance for improving the results of treatment of this disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis included elective procedures for peptic ulcer performed in the surgical department of Tula Regional Clinical Hospital in the period from 2011 to 2015. These data were compared with those for the period 1996-2000 in order to objectively identify current changes in surgery for peptic ulcer. The interval between both periods was 10 years. The main group consisted of 47 patients with peptic ulcer who underw

Surgical Cricothyroidotomy is regarded as an emergency procedure today even though it has a good evidential record as an elective surgical airway. A misunderstanding of Jackson's landmark paper in 1921 has made the simple and safe procedure unpopular because of the fear of subglottic stenosis. We present the incidence of subglottic stenosis after surgical cricothyroidotomy, discuss evidence for elective surgical cricothyroidotomy, and suggest potential applications in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

BACKGROUND: Following the surge of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, government regulations, and recommendations from professional societies have conditioned the resumption of elective surgical and cardiovascular (CV) procedures on having strategies to prioritize cases because of concerns regarding the availability of sufficient resources and the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the use of a scoring system for standardized triage of elective CV procedures.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of patients scheduled for elective CV procedures that

BACKGROUND: High surgical volumes are attributed to improved quality of care, especially for extensive procedures. However, it remains unknown whether high-volume surgeons and hospitals have better results in gallstone surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate whether operative volume affects outcomes in cholecystectomies.
METHODS: A registry-based cohort study was performed, based on the Swedish Registry of Gallstone Surgery. Cholecystectomies from 2006 to 2019 were included. Annual volumes for the surgeon and hospital were retrieved. All procedures were categorized into volume-based

INTRODUCTION: The surgical procedures due to aortoiliac aneurysm (AAA) represent the most demanding procedures in conventional vascular surgery. This is due, among other things, to the relatively frequent systemic and surgical complications in polymorbid and often urgently operated patients. Surgical and vascular complications after resections of aortoiliac aneurysms are relatively common, and reintervention due to these complications is reported to range around 14%.
METHOD: Retrospective clinical study of a group of patients undergoing surgical management for aortoiliac aneurysms in the peri
