Future therapeutic strategies for olfactory disorders: electrical stimulation, stem cell therapy, and transplantation of olfactory epithelium-an overview.

Olfactory disorders may be temporary or permanent and can have various causes. Currently, many COVID-19 patients report a reduced or complete loss of olfactory function. A wide range of treatment options have been investigated in the past, such as olfactory training, acupuncture, medical therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, or surgical excision of olfactory epithelium, e.g., in severe qualitative smell disorders. The development of a bioelectric nose, e.g., in connection with direct electrical stimulation or transplantation of olfactory epithelium or stem cells, represent treatment opti

Comparison of the Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and Low-Level Laser Therapy on Drug-Resistant Temporomandibular Disorders.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a clinical term used for clinical signs and symptoms that affect the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and associated structures. Surgical and non-surgical treatments can be used for management of TMD. Non-surgical route is the main part of the treatment, since clinicians prefer non-aggressive treatment for TMD such as pharmacological and physical therapy. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are the main procedures in physical therapy. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was

The impact of transcutaneous electrical stimulation therapy on appendicostomy operation rates for children with chronic constipation--a single-institution experience.

PURPOSE: Appendicostomy for antegrade continence enema is a minimally invasive surgical intervention that has helped many children with chronic constipation. At our institution, since 2006, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) has been trialed to treat slow-transit constipation (STC) in children. This retrospective audit aimed to determine if TES use affected appendicostomy-formation rates and to monitor changes in practice. We hypothesized that appendicostomy rates have decreased for STC but not for other indications. METHODS: Appendicostomy-formation rate was determined for the 5 yea

Selecting therapy for sustained ventricular tachycardias: importance of the sensitivity and specificity of programmed electrical stimulation for predicting arrhythmia recurrences.

Antiarrhythmic therapy for prevention of sustained ventricular tachycardia is commonly guided by programmed electrical stimulation, and the persistent ability to initiate ventricular tachycardia during drug therapy often leads to the use of nonpharmacologic therapies such as surgery. Prior studies suggest that programmed stimulation has a high sensitivity but a lower specificity for predicting recurrences of ventricular tachycardia during drug therapy. We constructed a model to evaluate the impact of various programmed stimulation specificities and sensitivities on total mortality when patient

Innovative In Vivo Approaches to Bone Regeneration: Combining Chitosan-Xanthan Gum Membranes, Electrical Stimulation, and Laser Therapy.

Critical bone defects present significant clinical challenges due to their debilitating nature and associated costs. Tissue engineering offers a promising solution, employing biomaterials like porous chitosan (CH) and xanthan gum (XG) membranes as scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Electrical stimulation (ES) and laser (L) therapy, known for osteogenic and anti-inflammatory effects, respectively, may synergistically enhance bone healing when combined with these membranes. This study evaluated CH/XG membranes and their association with ES and L for the treatment of critical bone defects (25 mm2

Ultrasound-triggered dual-mode therapy for heart failure via synchronized electrical stimulation and nitric oxide release.

The multifaceted pathophysiology of heart failure demands therapeutic strategies that can concurrently address its electrophysiological and metabolic components. Here, we report a lead-free and battery-free piezoelectric nanoplatform that, under ultrasound irradiation, serves as a dual-mode platform to simultaneously generate localized electrical stimulation and trigger spatiotemporally controlled nitric oxide (NO) release. In a mouse model of pressure-overload-induced heart failure, this ultrasound-driven regimen restored cardiac contractile function, reversed pathological remodeling, and sup

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Electrical Stimulation Therapies for Diabetic Ulcers: A Network Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ulcers (DUs) are a common complication of diabetes, significantly impairing quality of life and placing a burden on healthcare systems. Electrical stimulation (ES) therapy is a non-invasive technique that promotes wound healing using various current types, including direct current (DC), pulsed current (PC), and alternating current (AC). However, the comparative efficacy and safety of these ES modalities for DUs remain unclear. METHODS: This study presents a network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy and safety of various ES
