Environmental radiofrequency electromagnetic field levels in a department of pediatrics.

Preterm neonates constitute a vulnerable population that is highly sensitive to its environment. Given the increased use of wireless communication devices (mobile and digital enhanced cordless telecommunications, WiFi networks, etc.), neonates hospitalized in a department of pediatrics are potentially exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). Strikingly, data on RF-EMF levels in pediatric units have not previously been published. The objective of the present study was thus to quantify the RF-EMF levels in a 34-bed tertiary department of pediatrics with a neonatal critical care

Controversies related to electromagnetic field exposure on peripheral nerves.

Electromagnetic field (EMF) is a pervasive environmental presence in modern society. In recent years, mobile phone usage has increased rapidly throughout the world. As mobile phones are generally held close to the head while talking, studies have mostly focused on the central and peripheral nervous system. There is a need for further research to ascertain the real effect of EMF exposure on the nervous system. Several studies have clearly demonstrated that EMF emitted by cell phones could affect the systems of the body as well as functions. However, the adverse effects of EMF emitted by mobile

Exposure to pulse modulated radiofrequency electromagnetic fields does not affect Sternberg working memory performance.

PURPOSE: To replicate a previously reported finding that radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure improves performance on the Sternberg working memory task, as indicated by decreased reaction time, and to test whether this effect, if verified, can also be induced by exposure to an infrared electromagnetic field (IR-EMF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight healthy adults participated in a randomized, counterbalanced provocation study. Working memory performance was assessed using a modified Sternberg working memory task, which was calibrated to individual performance levels in a

Pulsed electromagnetic fields activate a peripheral interoceptive pathway to suppress sympathetic Npy for osteogenesis.

Chronic stress-induced osteoporosis is a prevalent yet therapeutically challenging condition, with sympathetic overactivation as a key contributor. The dominant pathological mediator and strategies for its precise, non-invasive modulation remain unclear. Here, we identify sympathetic neuropeptide Y as a critical driver of this pathology. Using an unpredictable chronic mild stress model in male mice, we show that neuropeptide Y directly induces cellular senescence in bone marrow adipocytes, thereby impairing osteogenesis. Pulsed electromagnetic field treatment rescued bone loss in wild-type mic

Exploring the influence of Schumann resonance and electromagnetic fields on bioelectricity and human health.

This article explores the relationship between electromagnetic fields (EMF) and biological systems, focusing on the influence of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic frequencies (ELF), particularly Schumann's resonance (SR) at 7.83 hz. Cells and proteins may have evolved to take advantage of frequencies naturally present in the Earth's EMF, potentially enhancing cellular energy levels and affecting resting membrane potential (RMP). Thus, changes in or absence of SR may have adverse effects on the functioning of the whole organism. Bioelectricity, independent of genes, has been shown to modu

The effects and mechanisms of electromagnetic fields on bone remodeling: From clinical to laboratory.

UNLABELLED: Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are physical fields generated by electrically charged objects, and play a vital role in the growth and development of living organisms. Bone is a highly dynamic structure that undergoes a constant remodeling process. From 1962 to 1977, Bassett discovered the piezoelectric effect in bone tissue and found that EMFs accelerated osteogenesis, promoted tibial fracture healing in dogs, and had positive effects in clinical trials. Since then, EMFs have been increasingly studied in bone remodeling disorders as a non-invasive physical therapy. This review summa

Investigating the preventive effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields on glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rats.

The use of pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) has demonstrated effectiveness in the management of femoral head osteonecrosis as well as nonunion fractures; however, the effects of PEMF on preventing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) have not been extensively studied. The aim of this investigation was to explore the effectiveness of PEMF stimulation in averting GIOP in rats and uncover the potential fundamental mechanisms involved. A total of seventy-two adult male Wistar rats composed the experimental group and were subsequently assigned to three groups for treatment. (1) On the firs

Metabolic, Apoptotic and Fibro-Inflammatory Profiles of the Heart Exposed to Environmental Electromagnetic Fields.

Environmental stress can disturb the integrative functioning of the cardiovascular system and trigger a number of adaptive and/or maladaptive cell responses. Concomitant with the expanding use of mobile communication systems, public exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) raises the question of the impact of 900 MHz EMFs on cardiovascular health. Therefore, in this study, we experimentally investigated whether 915 MHz EMF exposure influenced cardiac metabolic, antioxidant, apoptotic, and fibro-inflammatory profiles in a mouse model. Healthy mice were sham-exposed or exposed to EMF for 14 day

A Review of the Effect of the Intermediate Frequency Electromagnetic Fields on Female Reproduction.

The use of intermediate frequency (IF) fields in occupational equipment and domestic appliances is increasing dramatically. The World Health Organization consistently points out that there is a lack of scientific evidence to assess the reproductive risk in female species within the exposure limits as stated by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. The purpose of this review paper is to review the available literature on the effects of IF EMR on female reproduction in all species and to fully understand these effects. A literature review of experimental, epidemiolog

The Response of Osteoblasts and Bone to Sinusoidal Electromagnetic Fields: Insights from the Literature.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have been proposed as a tool to ameliorate bone formation and healing. Despite their promising results, however, they have failed to enter routine clinical protocols to treat bone conditions where higher bone mass has to be achieved. This is no doubt also due to a fundamental lack of knowledge and understanding on their effects and the optimal settings for attaining the desired therapeutic effects. This review analysed the available in vitro and in vivo studies that assessed the effects of sinusoidal EMFs (SEMFs) on bone and bone cells, comparing the results and i

Effect of Bluetooth headset and mobile phone electromagnetic fields on the human auditory nerve.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The possibility that long-term mobile phone use increases the incidence of astrocytoma, glioma and acoustic neuroma has been investigated in several studies. Recently, our group showed that direct exposure (in a surgical setting) to cell phone electromagnetic fields (EMFs) induces deterioration of auditory evoked cochlear nerve compound action potential (CNAP) in humans. To verify whether the use of Bluetooth devices reduces these effects, we conducted the present study with the same experimental protocol. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized trial. METHODS: Twelve patients underw

Trends in wound repair: cellular and molecular basis of regenerative therapy using electromagnetic fields.

Chronic ulceration of the leg represents a major, underestimated problem of modern health care, involving physical and cosmetic impairment and social stigma along with high community costs for patients' treatment. The increasing prevalence of chronic ulcers, currently reported to be as much as 0.3% in the general population, should stimulate identification of more efficacious therapeutic approaches to achieve complete healing. The strategies of regenerative medicine based on small molecules, biomimetic scaffolds, gene or cell therapy, and electromagnetic field manipulation represent some of th

Resolution of sleep paralysis by weak electromagnetic fields in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

Sleep paralysis refers to episodes of inability to move during the onset of sleep or more commonly upon awakening. Patients often describe the sensation of struggling to move and may experience simultaneous frightening vivid hallucinations and dreams. Sleep paralysis and other manifestations of dissociated states of wakefulness and sleep, which reflect deficient monoaminergic regulation of neural modulators of REM sleep, have been reported in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A 40 year old woman with remitting-progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) experienced episodes of sleep paralysis sin

Treatment with electromagnetic fields improves dual-task performance (talking while walking) in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with an increased risk of falling resulting from visual disturbances, difficulties with gait and balance, apraxia of gait and peripheral neuropathy. These factors often interact synergistically to compromise the patient's gait stability. It has long been recognized that walking involves a cognitive component and that simultaneous cognitive and motor operations (dual-task) such as talking while walking may interfere with normal ambulation. Talking while walking reflects an example of a dual-task which is frequently impaired in MS patients. Impaired dual-tas

The development and application of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) for ununited fractures and arthrodeses.

This article deals with the rational and practical use of surgically noninvasive pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) in treating ununited fractures, failed arthrodeses, and congenital pseudarthroses (infantile nonunions). The method is highly effective (more than 90 per cent success) in adult patients when used in conjunction with good management techniques that are founded on biomechanical principles. When union fails to occur with PEMFs alone after approximately four months, their proper use in conjunction with fresh bone grafts insures a maximum failure rate of 1 to 1.5 per cent. Union oc
