Cyanide consumption minimisation and concomitant toxic effluent minimisation during precious metals extraction from waste printed circuit boards.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) constitute a hazardous material with up to 40 different metals, including numerous many heavy metals and environmentally harmful metals. Most hydrometallurgical processing approaches use high concentrations of toxic reagents and generate significant amounts of harmful effluents. This research investigates the use of cyanide-starved glycine solution containing no free cyanide in the leachate to extract precious metals from WPCBs, with most of copper and base metals pre-removed by upstream glycine-only leaching. Under the optimised conditions, 90.1% Au, 89.4%

A novel method for the removal of epoxy coating from waste printed circuit board.

The printed circuit board, which is the heart of all electronic devices, is a rich source of metal, which could act as a future resource. Bioleaching, a biological treatment, would be an appropriate method for the environmentally sound management of e-waste. Various strippers are used to remove the epoxy coating and it is harmful to remove the epoxy coating with those solvents and salts in the open because of the presence of brominated flame retardants on the surface of the printed circuit board, which leads to serious health issues. An alternate process is required to remove the epoxy coating

Italian WEEE management system and treatment of end-of-life cooling and freezing equipments for CFCs removal.

This study presents and analyzes the data of the Italian system for take-back and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipments (WEEEs) in the start-up period 2008-2010. The analysis was focused particularly on the data about the treatment of end-of-life cooling and freezing equipments. In fact, the wastes of cooling and freezing equipments have a high environmental impact. Indeed, in their compressor oil and insulation polyurethane (PU) foams chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) ozone-depleting gases are still present. In the period 2001-2004 Northern Italy resulted the main source in Europe of

A strong spatial association between e-waste burn sites and childhood lymphoma in the West Bank, Palestine.

A paper in the International Journal of Cancer analyzed Palestinian cancer registry data in the West Bank from 1998 to 2007, showing a cluster of elevated cancer incidence in rural villages in south-west Hebron, with a 4.10 risk ratio for childhood lymphoma (p = 0.0023). The paper called for investigation of the environmental or genetic etiologies of this cluster in an otherwise unremarkable rural area.1 Our research in these same villages shows them to be the center of an extensive informal electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) dismantling industry in Palestine, operating for almost two d

Augmentation in bioleaching potential of indigenous Bacillus sp. ISO1 for metals recovery from waste computer-printed circuit boards.

The bio-cyanidation process of various cyanogenic microorganisms is found to be a sustainable and effective method for metals recovery from primary and secondary sources. This process has surpassed the limitations of the chemical cyanide treatment process; thus, prioritized as a promising approach for e-waste "urban mining" strategies. The main focus of the study was to enhance the bioleaching capacity of indigenous Bacillus sp. ISO1 and to implement optimized parameters in large-scale bioleaching operations. The assessment of various amino acids unveiled that like other cyanogenic microorgani

Co-pyrolysis of waste printed circuit boards with iron compounds for Br-fixing and material recovery.

Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) were co-pyrolyzed with iron oxides and iron salts. Solid, liquid, and gaseous products were collected and characterized. Co-pyrolysis with FeCl2, FeCl3, or FeSO4 was able to increase the yield of liquid product which was rich in phenol and its homologues. Also, the addition of co-pyrolysis reagents reduced the release of brominated organics to liquid as Br was either fixed as FeBr3 in solids or released as HBr. In particular, FeCl2 showed the best ability to reduce the release of Br-containing organics to liquid compared with FeCl3 and FeSO4. Solid residual

Gold recovery from shredder light fraction of E-waste recycling plant by flotation-ammonium thiosulfate leaching.

This paper describes the recovery of gold (Au) from shredder light fraction (SLF) of a recycling plant by flotation and leaching. SLF is typically sent to landfills as waste, but it still contains substantial amounts of Au, and other metals like Cu and Fe. The SLF sample used in this study contains 0.003% of Au, 12% of Cu, and 10% of Fe. Flotation results showed that over 99% of Au and 50% of combustibles were recovered in froth while most of the base metals were recovered in tailing. SEM-EDX of froth products indicates that Au floated via two mechanisms: (1) flotation of Au-plated plastic par

Tuneable separation of gold by selective precipitation using a simple and recyclable diamide.

The efficient separation of metals from ores and secondary sources such as electronic waste is necessary to realising circularity in metal supply. Precipitation processes are increasingly popular and are reliant on designing and understanding chemical recognition to achieve selectivity. Here we show that a simple tertiary diamide precipitates gold selectively from aqueous acidic solutions, including from aqua regia solutions of electronic waste. The X-ray crystal structure of the precipitate displays an infinite chain of diamide cations interleaved with tetrachloridoaurate. Gold is released fr

Socioeconomic development as a determinant of the levels of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs in the inhabitants of Western and Central African countries.

Several studies of environmental samples indicate that the levels of many persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are increasing in Africa, but few studies have been conducted in humans. Simultaneously, many African countries are experiencing a rapid economic growth and implementing information and communication technologies (ICT). These changes have generated high amounts of electronic waste (e-waste) that have not been adequately managed. We tested the hypothesis that the current levels of two main classes of POPs in Western and Central African countries are affected by the degree of socioecono

Recovery of indium from LCD screens of discarded cell phones.

Advances in technological development have resulted in high consumption of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), amongst which are cell phones, which have LCD (liquid crystal display) screens as one of their main components. These multilayer screens are composed of different materials, some with high added value, as in the case of the indium present in the form of indium tin oxide (ITO, or tin-doped indium oxide). Indium is a precious metal with relatively limited natural reserves (Dodbida et al., 2012), so it can be profitable to recover it from discarded LCD screens. The objective of th

Porous Phenazine-bridged Tetraoxa[8]Circulenes for Selective Gold Recovery and Heterogeneous Catalysis.

The sustainable recovery of precious metals is critical for securing strategic resources while reducing the environmental footprint of mining. Among these, the selective recovery of gold from electronic waste represents a particularly attractive yet challenging target. Herein, we report the synthesis of phenazine-based porous tetraoxa[8]circulene, PpTOC, incorporating heterocyclic crown ether moieties for efficient gold capture. The PpTOC combines a high surface area over 1200 m2 g- 1 with aza-crown ether-like cavities and high heteroatom content, enabling high gold uptake capacities of up to

Gut microbiota disturbance exaggerates battery wastewater-induced hepatotoxicity through a gut-liver axis.

As the primary source of electricity for various devices, batteries are important contributors to the overall electronic waste generated; and are widely considered a source of highly ecotoxic pollutants. Material leakage in battery manufacturing has not been completely solved, and the elucidation of the toxic mechanisms of battery wastewater exposure is needed. We demonstrated that battery waste exposure disrupted the intestinal flora and aggravated hepatotoxicity via the gut-liver axis. Under battery waste exposure, colon epithelium suffered physiological damage, and gene and protein expressi

Mixotrophy for carbon-conserving waste upcycling.

Modern chemical manufacturing, on which human quality of life depends, is unsustainable; alternative production routes must be developed. Electrochemical and biological processes offer promise for upgrading waste streams, including recalcitrant carbon dioxide and plastic-derived wastes. However, the inherent heterogeneity and high energy requirements of upcycling the chemical endpoints of the "take-make-waste" economy remain challenging. Cupriavidus necator is an emergent catalyst for complex feedstock valorization because of its extreme metabolic flexibility, which allows it to utilize a wide

Metabolic alterations bridge exposure to urinary halogenated phenols and bisphenols to dyslipidemia: Evidence from an e-waste recycling area.

Halogenated phenols and bisphenols are metabolic-disrupting chemicals related to electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling activities. However, their adverse effects on lipid metabolism and the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Based on a cross-sectional study of 227 e-waste workers and residents from an e-waste recycling area in China, we measured 11 urinary halogenated phenols and bisphenols, quantified four serum lipid parameters, and performed untargeted serum metabolomics. Dyslipidemia and its subtypes (hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyper low-density l

Aromatic amine antioxidants (AAs) and p-phenylenediamines-quinones (PPD-Qs) in e-waste recycling industry park: Occupational exposure and liver X receptors (LXRs) disruption potential.

Recently, evidence of aromatic amine antioxidants (AAs) existence in the dust of the electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling area has been exposed. However, there are limited studies investigating occupational exposure and toxicity associated with AAs and their transformation products (p-phenylenediamines-quinones, i.e., PPD-Qs). In this study, 115 dust and 42 hand wipe samples collected from an e-waste recycling industrial park in central China were analyzed for 19 AAs and 6 PPD-Qs. Notably, the median concentration of ∑6PPD-Qs (1,110 ng/g and 1,970 ng/m2) was significantly higher (p < 0.05, M

Removal of CdTe in acidic media by magnetic ion-exchange resin: a potential recycling methodology for cadmium telluride photovoltaic waste.

Sulfonated magnetic microspheres (PSt-DVB-SNa MPs) have been successfully prepared as adsorbents via an aqueous suspension polymerization of styrene-divinylbenzene and a sulfonation reaction successively. The resulting adsorbents were confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The leaching process of CdTe was optimized, and the removal efficiency of Cd and Te from the leaching solu

A simple method to prepare g-C3N4-TiO2/waste zeolites as visible-light-responsive photocatalytic coatings for degradation of indoor formaldehyde.

The indoor air quality should be highly addressed because people spend more time staying in indoor environments. Photocatalytic degradation of indoor pollutants (e.g., formaldehyde) is one of the most promising and environmental friendly technologies. In this work, a heterostructured photocatalyst combining graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), TiO2 and waste zeolites (g-C3N4-TiO2/waste zeolites) is developed by a facile calcination and sol-gel method. The prepared photocatalysts exhibit the superior visible-light-responsive activities toward formaldehyde degradation (k = 0.0127 min-1) which is h
