Effect of mydriasis with topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

This study aimed to investigate the effect of mydriasis using topical rocuronium bromide on electroretinography (ERG) in domestic pigeons (Columba livia). Scotopic mixed rod and cone, photopic cone, and photopic flicker ERG were performed on nine eyes of nine healthy adult pigeons under sedation. Each pigeon underwent two sets of ERG recordings. First, without the induction of mydriasis (control) and the second time with the induction of mydriasis using topical rocuronium bromide (treatment). The results were compared using either the Student's t-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test, where a P-value

Correlation of electroretinography components with visual function and prognosis of central retinal artery occlusion.

We investigated the full-field electroretinographic (ERG) parameters with visual function and prognosis in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), according to its severity. 110 affected eyes of CRAO patients were enrolled and compared with fellow uninvolved eyes (N = 110) and normal control eyes (N = 30). B/A ratio and photopic negative response amplitude (PhNR) resulted in statistically significant differences among the CRAO subgroups according to the severity of retinal ischemia. Amplitudes of PhNR indicating ganglion cell function showed a more marked decline in mild to severe ischemia th

Visual pathway abnormalities Wilson's disease: an electrophysiological study using electroretinography and visual evoked potentials.

The pathogenesis of the pattern reversal visual evoked potential (PRVEP) abnormalities in patients with Wilson's disease (WD) has not been investigated earlier. Since electroretinography (ERG) assesses the functional integrity of the retina, it was used along with PRVEP to localize the abnormalities in PRVEP in Wilson's patients. Ten newly diagnosed Wilson's disease patients underwent PRVEP and flash ERG soon after the diagnosis was established. The PRVEP latencies were prolonged in comparison with the controls (P<0.001). Photopic and scotopic A waves and oscillatory potentials were prolonged

Non-Infectious Anterior Uveitis Is Associated with Functional Retinal Changes Demonstrable by Multifocal Electroretinography.

Introduction: Although anterior non-infectious uveitis affects the structures of the anterior segment of the eye, (inflammatory) disruption of the hemato-ocular barrier may lead to changes in the structures of the posterior segment of the eye. Objective: To evaluate functional retinal changes using multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and their relationship with structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in patients with acute anterior non-infectious uveitis (AANU). Methods: This prospective study included 38 eyes of 19 patients diagnosed with unilateral AANU and age-matched he

Multifocal electroretinography increases following experimental glaucoma in nonhuman primates with retinal ganglion cell axotomy.

PURPOSE: To determine whether short-latency changes in multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) observed in experimental glaucoma (EG) are secondary solely to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss or whether there is a separate contribution from elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: Prior to operative procedures, a series of baseline mfERGs were recorded from six rhesus macaques using a 241-element unstretched stimulus. Animals then underwent hemiretinal endodiathermy axotomy (HEA) by placing burns along the inferior 180° of the optic nerve margin in the right eye (OD). mfERG recordings were

Correlation between electroretinography, foveal anatomy and visual acuity in aniridia due to PAX6 mutations.

BACKGROUND: Aniridia patients have poor visual acuity and iris malformation. The fovea in these patients is underdeveloped, but the relationship between structure and electrophysiologic function remains incompletely understood. This study correlates electrophysiology, visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with aniridia secondary to mutations in the PAX6 gene and compares with age-similar controls. METHODS: Patients were recruited from clinical practice. The mfERG protocol was a 4-min 103-hexagon protocol covering approximately 40° in diameter of central retina. Diag

Combined optical coherence tomography and electroretinography system for imaging neurovascular coupling in the human retina.

SIGNIFICANCE: During their early stages of development, neurological and neurodegenerative diseases cause changes to the biological tissue's morphology, physiology and metabolism at the cellular level, and acute, transient changes in the local blood flow. The development of optical methods that can image and quantify such changes simultaneously and investigate the relationship among them (neurovascular coupling) in neural tissues can have a profound effect on furthering our understanding of neurodegeneration. AIM: Our aim is to develop an optical imaging platform for imaging and characterizat

Primer on visual field testing, electroretinography, and other visual assessments for patients treated with vigabatrin.

Vigabatrin, an irreversible inhibitor of γ-aminobutyric acid transaminase, is an antiepileptic drug indicated in the United States as adjunctive therapy for adult patients with refractory complex partial seizures who have responded inadequately to several alternative treatments and for monotherapy treatment of infantile spasms in patients 1 month to 2 years of age. Approval of vigabatrin in the United States was contingent on the implementation of a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) to manage the threat of a progressive, permanent bilateral concentric peripheral visual field defec

Electroretinography reveals retinal dysfunction in Parkinson's disease despite normal high-resolution optical coherence tomography findings.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD)-associated inner retinal abnormalities, particularly the retinal ganglion cells (RGC) layer, on optical coherence tomography (OCT) have recently gained importance as a biomarker of non-motor involvement of the disease but functional RGC evaluation using photopic negative response (PhNR) has not yet been determined. This study aims to compare structural and functional findings of the retina and optic nerve in PD with healthy controls (CT) including PhNR and OCT. METHODS: Forty-one eyes of 21 PD patients and 38 eyes of 19 CT underwent ophthalmic examinatio

Flat Electroretinography and Acute Visual Loss After Ocriplasmin Injection for Vitreomacular Adhesion Complicating Macular Schisis.

A 53-year-old woman with macular and diffuse retinoschisis complicated by presumed vitreomacular traction underwent unilateral intravitreal ocriplasmin injection. Within hours after injection, she noted a loss of vision and the perception of "negative" images in the treated eye. Electrophysiologic testing revealed flat waveforms, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed initial decreased central macular thickness at day 1, followed by massive increased macular thickness with subfoveal neurosensory retinal detachment at 1 week. Her central macular thickness on OCT slowly returned to baseli

[Multifocal electroretinography in the diagnosis and monitoring of early and intermediate stages of age-related macular degeneration].

Multifocal electroretinography is a valuable diagnostic method for the objective localization and quantitative assessment of functional disorders of the central retina in age-related macular degeneration. It is used to detect early changes, monitor the course of the disease and treatment outcomes. In many cases, multifocal electroretinography is a more sensitive method for detecting functional disorders at the early/intermediate stage of age-related macular degeneration compared to morphological (optical coherence tomography) and subjective (visual acuity, perimetry) testing methods.

Ocular syphilis with optic disc neovascularization treated with bevacizumab evaluated by OCT angiography and electroretinography.

We present our findings in an atypical case of ocular syphilis with optic disc neovascularization that was treated with intravitreal bevacizumab and followed by multimodal imaging and electroretinography. A 29-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of night blindness of one-year duration. Our initial examination showed that an optic disc neovascularization was present, and the optical coherence tomographic (OCT) images showed a reduction in the length of the ellipsoid zone of both eyes. Fluorescein angiography showed leakage from the optic disc neovascular tissue, and the presence of no

Retinal ischemia induced by occlusion of both common carotid arteries in rats as demonstrated by electroretinography.

In 2 models of reduced cerebral blood flow-permanent occlusion of the vertebral arteries plus transient occlusion of the common carotid arteries (4VO) and transient clamping of the common carotid arteries (BCCA)-the acute effects on the electrical function of the retina were monitored by recording the photopic electroretinogram. During both 4VO and BCCA the amplitude of the b-wave was reduced. Within 30 min of reperfusion after 4VO and after BCCA the b-wave had fully recovered. In contrast, the a-wave was not affected by either treatment. The data suggest that occlusion of common carotid arter
