The development of gastroschisis has long remained an area of interest and controversy. Successive theories about its pathogenesis are herein reviewed and discussed. Two historical assumptions, that omphalocele results from a persistent umbilical hernia, and that gastroschisis does not involve the umbilical cord, are dismissed. Therefore, one can envision gastroschisis for what it is, i.e. a ruptured physiological hernia. The causal agents for this intrauterine accident to occur are yet to be determined. Further bowel damage and complications can be explained by the mesenteric insult.

The embryological pigment epithelial dystrophies may be due, although rather rarely, to chemical factors, such as antibiotics and thalidomide, to ionizing radiation and to infectious factors, syphilis or viral infections, such as mumps, measles, varicella, or cytomegalovirus. The most frequent and the most typical dystrophy is, nevertheless, the rubella epitheliopathy with its widespread scattered black pigment deposits, found predominantly in the posterior pole, and its unaffected visual functions. The macular dystrophy associated with deaf-mutism is also often due to a maternal rubella infec

It is essential to identify vascular anomalies of the thorax because of their potential association with congenital heart diseases and genetic abnormalities. Although some patients present with symptoms early in childhood, others remain asymptomatic until adulthood. However, certain anomalies can impact the prognosis significantly and necessitate tailored treatment strategies. Moreover, understanding the embryologic origins and anatomic variations of each vasculature is paramount because many of these anomalies arise from disruptions in the developmental process and can coexist simultaneously.

A ureterocele is a congenital cystic dilatation of the intravesical ureter that may affect either a single system kidney or the upper pole of a duplex system. The position of ureteral orifice correlates with function of associated renal moiety. Ureteroceles associated with good renal function and prompt drainage or ureteroceles associated with no renal function can be managed nonoperatively. Endoscopic puncture of ureteroceles addresses most cases; iatrogenic reflux may rarely require secondary surgery. Robot-assisted laparoscopic upper pole nephroureterectomy and ureteroureterostomy procedure

Background and Objectives: The evaluative strength of available bibliometric tools in the field of clinical embryology has never been examined in the literature. The aim is to bring insight regarding the identity of clinical embryology research, introducing concerns when solely relying on the methodology of bibliometric analysis. Methods: An all-inclusive analysis of the most bibliometrically highlighted scientific contributions regarding the cornerstones of clinical embryology was performed employing the Scopus, Web of Science (WoS) and PubMed databases, between 1978-2018. An analysis of the

Punctal agenesis is defined as the absence of the punctum occurring secondary to a failure of embryogenesis. This review synthesizes existing data on the embryology, anatomy, clinical presentation, symptomatology, management options and treatment outcomes of punctal agenesis. A foundational knowledge of the underlying embryologic and anatomical abnormalities is fundamental to understanding its clinical presentation and assists in choosing an appropriate management strategy. Existing outcomes data is generally favorable and suggests management with a step-wise approach can alleviate symptoms in

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal seminoma is a very rare form of cancer, with embryological origin represented by primordial germ cells from the urogenital ridges left behind during the fetal development. Extragenital germ cell tumors can also occur in the mediastinum or the pineal gland. The aim of this paper is to outline the particularities and draw embryological, histopatological and treatment conclusions regarding extragonadal germ cell tumors.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 43-year-old patient without any additional pathology was admitted for anemia of unknown etiology. The clinical examination re

This retrospective study gives a summary of ophthalmic artery (OA) variations to serve as guidelines for surgical interventionists and trainees. Pubmed and Medline searches were conducted. The OA usually arises intradurally (superomedial, anteromedial, or rarely superolateral) from the internal carotid artery (ICA). Rare extradural origin (primitive dorsal OA) (PDOA) remnant and extremely rare interdural origin (primitive ventral OA) (PVOA) remnant are of significance when sectioning the dural ring. Rarely, a persistent PDOA with ICA origin, or a PDOA remnant with inferolateral trunk origin, e

Sternal clefts, ectopia cordis, and Cantrell's pentalogy continue to be very rare congenital anomalies in pediatric surgery. Unfortunately, these conditions present as neonatal emergencies and demand early surgical intervention. This article reviews the embryological development of the chest wall, specific sternal defect anomalies, along with available methods of treatment.

Otomandibular dysplasias encompass a broad range of congenital malformations (hemifacial microsomia, mandibulofacial dysostosis) affecting both jaw and ear apparatus. Deciphering the mechanisms of normal embryonic development is a prerequisite for optimal clinical management of those malformations. The development of craniofacial structures is a multi-step process, which involves many developmental events ranging from the migration of neural crest cells from the neural primordium, the molecular interactions that coordinate outgrowth and patterning of the facial primordia, to the fine tuning of

Laryngeal webs are uncommon congenital anomalies. The formation of a laryngeal web represents anomalous embryologic development of the larynx. The extent of airway involvement varies which ultimately affects surgical management. A series of five congenital laryngeal webs each with subglottic involvement is reported. One patient also had a ventral laryngeal cleft. All patients ultimately required open laryngeal reconstruction, either laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) or thyrotomy (laryngofissure) and silastic keel, to correct the defect and all were decannulated. Findings at surgery correlat

Aphallia, or penile agenesis, is an extremely rare congenital anomaly with fewer than 100 cases reported worldwide. It results from failed development of the genital tubercle during early embryogenesis, leading to complete absence of penile structures and abnormal urethral opening. This defect is often part of a broader caudal developmental disturbance and is frequently associated with genitourinary anomalies such as urethrorectal fistula, renal agenesis, renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, and cryptorchidism, all of which significantly influence prognosis. Diagnosis requires careful differentiat

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is the most common malformation of the prosencephalon in humans. It is characterized by a continuum of structural brain anomalies resulting from the failure of midline cleavage of the prosencephalon. The three classic subtypes of HPE are alobar, semilobar and lobar, although a few additional categories have been added to this original classification. The severity of the clinical phenotype is broad and usually mirrors the radiologic and associated facial features. The etiology of HPE includes both environmental and genetic factors. This article reviews the physiology of the ductus arteriosus, the pathophysiology of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and the role advanced imaging such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can play in guiding diagnosis and percutaneous or surgical intervention. A PDA can have variable clinical and radiologic presentations and can be important to characterize in patients with vascular rings, aortic maldevelopment and congenital heart disease. An understanding of the PDA and the application of CT and MRI can allow the radiologist to provide key information to phys

gastroschisis is a congenital structural defect of the abdominal wall, most often to the right of the umbilicus, through which the abdominal viscera protrude. Its developmental, etiological and epidemiological aspects have been a hot topic of controversy for a long time. However, recent findings suggest the involving of genetic and chromosomal alterations and the existence of a stress-inducing pathogenetic pathway, in which risk factors such as demographic and environmental ones can converge. To expand the frontier of knowledge about a malformation that has showed a growing global prevalence,
