A sensitive determination method for mercury speciation analysis was developed. Four mercury species, mercury ion, methylmercury, ethylmercury, and phenylmercury, were complexed with emetine-dithiocarbamate (emetine-CS(2)), and then injected onto a HPLC instrument coupled with a tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(III) chemiluminescence detection system. Syrup of ipecac (SI) has been used medicinally since the 1500s; however, little is known about the pharmacokinetics in humans of SI's active ingredients, emetine and cephaeline. The objective of this study was to evaluate the rate of absorption and the rate of elimination of emetine and cephaeline. Carapichea ipecacuanha produces various emetine-type alkaloids, known as ipecac alkaloids, which have long been used as expectorants, emetics, and amebicides.
