Evaluation of a novel skin care product for the management of chemotherapy-related dermatologic toxicities: A quasi-experimental study.

PURPOSE: Evaluate the efficacy of a novel skincare product for the management of chemotherapy-related dermatological toxicities. METHODS: A monocentric, prospective, interventional, open-label, pretest-posttest, single-group study with cancer patients receiving chemotherapy (n = 100) was set up. All enrolled patients applied the emollient daily to their face and body for three weeks. The severity of the skin reactions was evaluated by a researcher using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) v5.0 at baseline and end of the trial. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) included t

Effective use of methylprednisolone aceponate 0.1% in a 9-month-old infant with atopic eczema and sleep disturbance.

A 9-month-old infant, with no family history of atopy, presenting with erythematous, itchy plaques, and sleep disturbance, was diagnosed with atopic eczema (AE). Previous treatment with topical hydrocortisone and emollients had little effect. The infant was treated nightly with methylprednisolone aceponate (MPA) 0.1% (Advantan(®)) cream, in addition to emollients and an oral antihistamine. After 1 week of once-daily MPA 0.1% treatment, followed by 1 week of alternate-day treatment with Advantan, significant improvements in AE symptoms and sleep were observed. The patient's caregiver reported o

Comprehensive characterization of the structure and properties of human stratum corneum relating to barrier function and skin hydration: modulation by a moisturizer formulation.

The stratum corneum (SC) is key in the maintenance of the biomechanical barrier and hydration of skin. Our previous investigations showed beneficial effects of a combination of emollients on water capture and retention and protein and lipid organization, all of which are linked to dryness and dry skin damage. Here, we show how a formulation containing an emollient combination ("Trio") and its basal formulation (placebo) impacted the descriptors of SC hydration in SC layers. Only the Trio formulation-not its placebo formulation-modified SC biomechanical drying stress behaviour and imparted a hi

A comparison of physicochemical properties of a selection of modern moisturizers: hydrophilic index and pH.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify and compare the physiochemical properties of various topical emollients and to correlate these findings with the products' potential to maintain the stratum corneum (SC) acid milieu, while possessing the appropriate water content for skin rehydration, user adherence, and comfort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The pH and hydrophilic fraction of 31 skin moisturizers sold in the US were measured. Hydrophilic Index (HI) was calculated using the "HI equation." The two parameters were charted using a scatter plot with quadrant divisions. Products with lower hydrophilicity were consid

Common Skin Conditions in Children and Adolescents: Atopic and Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurring, inflammatory skin condition. Xerosis, pruritus, and rash make the clinical diagnosis. Adequate skin care and regular emollient use are key in management. Topical corticosteroids are the first-line treatment for AD flare-ups. Wet wrap therapy can improve AD severity and extent. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are second-line treatments. Emollient use, topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors, and bleach baths can help prevent flare-ups. Patients with refractory AD that might require immunomodulatory treatments, such as dupilumab (Dupixent

Management of cutaneous side-effects of cetuximab therapy in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cetuximab is a chimeric human-murine monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). It has shown activities against multiple malignancies in clinical trials. EGFR-inhibitors (EGFRI) often cause skin toxicity, most frequently acneiform eruption. Xerosis, eczema, fissures, teleangiectases, nail changes and paronychia can be seen in some cases, rarely hyperpigmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed local practice of skin toxicity management during treatment with cetuximab. From November 2005 to January 2007, 31 patients with metastatic colorectal cance

Topical regimens for the management of uremic pruritus.

Uremic pruritus (UP), also known as chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus, is a distressing condition affecting patients with end-stage renal disease. Characterized by persistent itching, it significantly impacts patients' quality of life, leading to sleep disturbances, emotional distress, and decreased overall well-being. Although the exact pathophysiology remains uncertain, immune dysregulation, reduced stratum corneum hydration, and altered neurogenic inflammation contribute to UP. Consequently, treating UP poses a significant challenge. Among therapeutic regimens, topical regimens hav

On top of cradle cap.

Cradle cap is often viewed as the norm in infancy. It is, however, highly amenable to treatment. While cradle cap generally causes no ill-effects to the newborn baby, new parents may experience disappointment in their attempts to resolve the problem and be distressed by others' response to their infant's appearance. Moisturisers have an important role in softening scale, yet baby oil alone is often not sufficient. Greasier emollients may not be cosmetically acceptable and parental choice can be a key factor in the successful treatment of the problem. Parents may benefit from instructions on ho

The role of a midpotency topical corticosteroid and the clinical relevance of formulation characteristics in the management of commonly encountered eczematous and inflammatory dermatoses in adults and children: focus on the pharmacologic properties of clocortolone pivalate 0.1% cream.

Midpotency topical corticosteroids (TCSs) are frequently used for the treatment of common eczematous and inflammatory skin disorders in both adults and children. There are several commercially available products in this category, and many vehicles and formulations for the clinician to choose from. Clocortolone pivalate 0.1% cream is a midpotency TCS formulated in an emollient formulation that has been shown to be effective and well tolerated when used appropriately in the management of several corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. This article discusses the physiochemical properties of the com

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors Affecting Skin Surface pH.

The body skin pH can usually vary from 4.0 to 7.0 depending on location. The presence of natural acidic compounds on the skin surface helps maintain the skin's physicochemical properties as well as its protective functions. Since the slightly acidic pH of the skin is extremely important for the skin's protective function, the skin is widely known as "acid mantel." Factors such as age, race, gender, body sites, biochemical differences, and even washing affect the pH of the stratum corneum. Recent clinical studies using an emollient-base finish product using the traditional way of measuring skin

Early intervention of atopic dermatitis as a preventive strategy for progression of food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Atopic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy (FA), have increased in prevalence in industrialized countries during the past few decades and pose a significant health burden. They appear to have a common underlying mechanism and a natural disease progression. AD is generally the first atopic disease to manifest followed by other atopic diseases, such as FA, allergic rhinitis, or allergic asthma suggesting that they are likely different manifestations of the same disease. BODY: Evidence suggests that allergic sensitization occurs through an impaired skin barrier,

Handwashing in Finland.

To prevent skin problems we have recommended in Finland that hospital personnel should avoid soap or other detergents for handwashing and instead use alcoholic preparations containing emollients such as 2% glycerol. Alcohol with emollient disinfection is used frequently in hospitals and it causes fewer complaints of skin dryness than washing with soap. However, there are still members of staff who have hand skin problems. Our studies conducted during winter have shown that when these persons used emulsion for hand cleansing, instead of washing with soap, skin deterioration was much less, allow

A Promising Approach to Treat Psoriasis: Inhibiting Cytochrome P450 3A4 Metabolism to Enhance Desoximetasone Therapy.

(1) Background: Human keratinocytes and murine skin express various cytochrome P450 enzymes. These include cytochrome P450 3A4, which may participate in the metabolism of cytochrome P450 3A4 substrate drugs. Desoximetasone, a topical corticosteroid and cytochrome P450 3A4 substrate, is used to treat skin conditions such as skin allergies, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the anti-psoriatic effect of a low dose of desoximetasone by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A4 metabolism in the epidermis. (2) Methods: Psoriasis-like skin was induced in BALB/c mice via t

Collodion baby: a follow-up study of 17 cases.

Seventeen cases of collodion baby are reported. Clinical aspects, complications, treatment, final outcome and family history were studied. We did not observe any clinical features in the collodion baby that could serve as a clue in predicting the final diagnosis. Infections were observed in nine, hypothermia in five and hypernatraemic dehydration in four cases. Skin infection mainly occurred in babies treated with emollients (petrolatum, lanolin and cetomacrogolis cream were used). We therefore recommend treating the collodion baby in a humidified incubator, if necessary with intravenous rehyd
