Body-focused repetitive behaviors, such as trichotillomania and skin-picking, are not well understood in clinical communities. Research and practice with a population exhibiting these behaviors have focused almost exclusively on the usefulness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in symptom reduction. The author specializes in treating patients with body-focused repetitive behaviors and suggests that a holistic, psychodynamic model of treatment for this population creates possibilities for deeper change. Group therapy can be an important component of this work, helping clients to overcome resistanc

Consistent research supports altered emotional processing in adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), including elevations in alexithymia, or deficits in identifying and describing emotions and other internal experiences. Despite increasing interest in emotion-focused therapies for AN, alexithymia is often not directly addressed within many existing treatments, and little empirical work has moved beyond descriptive, cross-sectional research. In this paper, we propose that refining the field's understanding of alexithymia may provide insights into poor outcomes in existing psychological treat

UNLABELLED: Idiographic research methods can provide rich information regarding the process of change in specific treatments.
OBJECTIVE: Adopting an idiographic, exploratory approach, this study examined (a) temporal patterns of 3 transdiagnostic change constructs (mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, and emotion avoidance), (b) the relationships between these constructs and depression and anxiety symptom severity over time, and (c) changes in these constructs in relation to the introduction of specific transdiagnostic intervention strategies in a single case.
METHOD: The case was a 64-year-o

BACKGROUND: Adults with adverse childhood experiences and exposure to adverse life events experience a diverse array of physical, mental, and social health problems across their lifespan. Adult exposure to emotional trauma, physical injury, or other adverse life events may result in the development of post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. Understanding individuals' response to stress and their coping strategies is as important as the stimulus or the causes of the stress for effective stress management interventions.
METHODS: This is a mixed quantitative and qualitative onl

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) presents with a constellation of phenotypes, including trouble regulating emotion and aggressive behaviors, disordered sleep, intellectual impairments, and atypical physical development. Genetic study of the X chromosome revealed that substantial repeat expansion of the 5' end of the gene fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) promoted DNA methylation and, consequently, silenced expression of FMR1. Further analysis proved that shorter repeat expansions in FMR1 also manifested in disease at later stages in life. Treatment and therapy options do exist, but they o

BACKGROUND: Neural alterations related to treatment outcome in patients with both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid personality disorder are unknown. Here we describe the protocol for a neuroimaging study of treatment of patients with PTSD and comorbid borderline (BPD) or cluster C (CPD) personality disorder traits. Our specific aims are to 1) investigate treatment-induced neural alterations, 2) predict treatment outcome using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 3) study neural alterations associated with BPD and CPD in PTSD patients. We hypothesize

In recent years, empirical data and theoretical accounts relating to the relationship between childhood victimization and psychotic experiences have accumulated. Much of this work has focused on co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or putative causal mechanisms in isolation from each other. The complexity of posttraumatic stress reactions experienced in psychosis remains poorly understood. This paper therefore attempts to synthesize the current evidence base into a theoretically informed, multifactorial model of posttraumatic stress in psychosis. Three trauma-related vulnerability factor

Introduction: Trauma-focused therapy (TFT) is highly effective in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is some evidence that TFT is less effective in specific groups, such as veterans and people with comorbid personality disorders, emotion regulation problems or substance use disorders.Aim: In this pre-post pilot study, we investigated feasibility and effectiveness of a 12-week veteran intensive treatment consisting of integrated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and TFT, in Dutch veterans with PTSD, comorbid emotion regulation and/or substance use problems. Results: Self-repor

BACKGROUND: Studies of rumination suggest that self-focused attention is maladaptive and perpetuates depression. Conversely, self-focused attention can be adaptive, facilitating self-knowledge and the development of the alternative functional interpretations of negative thoughts and feelings on which cognitive therapy of depression depends. Increasing evidence suggests there are distinct varieties of self-focus, each with distinct functional properties. This study tested the prediction that in depressed patients brief inductions of analytical versus experiential self-focus would differentially

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common childhood condition characterised by excessive distress related to separation from attachment figures, often leading to social, emotional, and academic difficulties. If untreated, SAD can increase the risk of future psychopathology, highlighting the importance of effective interventions.
AIM: This scoping review systematically maps and analyzes the current evidence on intervention strategies to reduce separation anxiety and promote emotional and social well-being in children.
METHOD: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISM

INTRODUCTION: Literature has pointed the need for intervention programs specifically tailored to target the treatment needs of young offenders, as well as the need to test the efficacy of such programs through physiological indexes of emotion regulation (e.g., heart rate variability; HRV), complementing self-reports typically used as outcome measures. The PSYCHOPATHY.COMP is a 20-session individual intervention program based on Compassion Focused Therapy aiming to reduce psychopathic traits and disruptive behavior among young offenders through the development of a compassionate motivation, whi

Polyvagal theory advocates for working with the body, becoming aware of the body and connecting with the senses. Similarly, paying attention to and influencing one's physical and sensory experience is a core aspect of the creative arts and psychomotor therapies. Polyvagal theory offers opportunities for strengthening resilience by treating emotion-regulation problems, stress, and trauma, as well as restoring regulation of the autonomic nervous system. Paying attention to and influencing physical and sensory experiences are core aspects of creative arts and psychomotor therapies. This theoretic

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies are important components of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Additionally, up-regulation and difficulties in the down-regulation of negative feelings are associated with mental disorders. However, little is known about the lasting effects of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on emotional experience and associated neural activation. Therefore, this study investigated immediate and prolonged effects of emotion regulation using cognitive reappraisal and distraction on subjective report and its neural correlates. Twenty-seven healthy females took pa

OBJECTIVE: Demand for trauma-focused therapy continues to increase, especially in community mental health care settings where group treatment models can be cost-effective and increase access to care. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may offer an effective therapeutic approach. The purpose of this proof-of-concept study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, trauma-focused, group-based treatment approach and investigate potential mechanisms of action.
METHOD: Study participants completed the Program for Alleviating and Reso

Existential, spiritual, and religious themes often evoke strong emotions in therapy, yet little is known about how clients' emotion regulation relates to these aspects. Spiritual psychotherapy for inpatient residential and intensive treatment (SPIRIT) integrates meaning in life within a cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) framework in acute and intensive mental health care and provides an appropriate context for examining this. This qualitative study explores: (1) clients' beliefs about expressing, managing, or suppressing emotions related to meaning in life, spirituality, or religion (MSR);

We examine the science and evidence supporting cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders. Recent trials focusing on the abnormal cognitive and emotional aspects of bulimia have reported a remission rate of about 45%, and a relapse rate of about 30% within one year. However, an early CBT trial that emphasized the normalization of eating behavior had a better outcome than treatment that focused on cognitive intervention. In support of this finding, another treatment, that restores a normal eating behavior using mealtime feedback, has an esti
