The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-30 (ERQ-30): A 30-item measure of 10 clinically relevant emotion regulation strategies.

People use different strategies to regulate their emotions, and these emotion regulation patterns have important implications for mental health. For over two decades, the most widely used tool for assessing emotion regulation has been the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, a 10-item measure of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Here, we introduce a new 30-item version-the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-30 (ERQ-30). Built on the conceptual foundation of the process model of emotion regulation, the ERQ-30 aims to advance emotion regulation assessments by capturing a more comprehe

Emotion regulation use in daily-life and its association with success of emotion-regulation, self-efficacy, stress, and state rumination.

INTRODUCTION: Investigations on emotion regulation strategies (ERS) primarily focus on the influence of instructed emotion regulation (ER) on outcomes. However, recent work has shown that selection of ERS is dependent on, e.g., situational demands and personal resources. METHODS: In this current investigation, we used an online diary to investigate ERS used by free choice and their association with ER-success, stress and rumination. We identified four factors of ERS: cognitive perspective change, cognitive-behavioral problem-solving, suppression-distraction and body-social ERS. Associations o

Regulation of positive and negative emotions across cultures: does culture moderate associations between emotion regulation and mental health?

Emotion regulation (ER) has been frequently linked to mental health (MH) with previous research focussing on a limited range of ER strategies. The present study examined whether strategies for the regulation of positive and negative emotions are differently related to MH (i.e. higher subjective well-being, less depressive symptoms) across cultures. Two samples consisting of 524 Japanese and 476 German-speaking ("Germans") university students completed our survey. Moderation analyses revealed cultural similarities and differences in associations between ER and MH. Across cultures, distraction f

Seekers' and regulators' perspectives of interpersonal emotion regulation: Associations with personality pathology.

Personality disorders (PDs) are well characterized by deficits in interpersonal and emotional functioning, highlighting the importance of examining their intersection, such as interpersonal emotion regulation (IER). Given the dyadic nature of IER, characterizing the individuals who help regulate emotions, and their perceptions of these interactions, may further elucidate the process of IER in individuals with personality pathology. We aimed to directly characterize network partners that aid in IER and compare perceptions between both IER seekers and regulators. Primary participants, who were r

The relationship between childhood emotional neglect and emotional eating: the chain mediating role of alexithymia and difficulties in emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating is prevalent across various weight groups and has a significant impact on individuals' emotion regulation and healthy eating behaviors. As an early adverse experience, childhood emotional neglect may be associated with greater emotional eating tendencies, potentially through poorer emotion recognition and emotion regulation; however, the underlying pathways remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood emotional neglect and emotional eating among college students, and to test the independent and chain mediating effects of alexithymia and

The Influence of Parental Control on Emotional Eating Among College Students: The Mediating Role of Emotional Experience and Regulation.

Background: Excessive parental control has been found to be associated with an increasing risk of emotional eating in children, yet the potential moderating role of emotion regulation abilities remains unclear. This study investigated the relationships between different types of parental control and emotional eating, as well as the mediating effects of specific emotion regulation strategies and negative emotions. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1167 Chinese college students (62.5% females, age: 20.23 ± 1.50 years) recruited via social media. Participants completed t

Managing emotions in panic disorder: A systematic review of studies related to emotional intelligence, alexithymia, emotion regulation, and coping.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Panic disorder is defined by recurring and unexpected panic attacks, accompanied by anticipatory anxiety about future attacks and their consequences. This generally involves avoiding situations and behaviors that can produce panic attacks (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Among anxiety disorders, panic disorder is associated with some of the greatest burdens in terms of personal suffering, occupational disability, and societal cost. The objective of this article is to systematically identify and review the empirical literature on emotional management pr

Moral emotions in mental health: regulation and mediation.

Moral emotions-such as guilt, shame, compassion, and gratitude-play a central role in shaping psychological functioning and mental health. This mini review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical research on the regulatory roles and mediating mechanisms of moral emotions in mental health outcomes. It is demonstrated that moral emotions activate both adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, self-compassion) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination, suppression) regulatory processes that significantly influence emotional resilience or vulnerability. Additionally, psychological flexibility, emotion r

Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children With Emotion Dysregulation.

Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic risk factor in childhood psychopathology that contributes to externalizing behaviors. To address this, regulation-focused psychotherapy for children (RFP-C) has been developed as a manualized, short-term psychodynamic intervention for 5- to 12-year-olds with externalizing behaviors rooted in underlying emotion dysregulation and affective conflict. The therapy follows a structured protocol comprising 16 child play therapy sessions and 4 parent sessions. Therapists use symbolic play, identify defense-based play disruptions, and adopt affect labeling to

Anger and emotion regulation strategies: a meta-analysis.

The hypothesis that maladaptive emotion regulation plays a central role in anger problems has driven the development of cognitive-behavioral interventions for anger and has stimulated a wealth of studies. However, this work is heterogeneous, drawing on multiple theories from clinical psychology and affective science, and focusing on multiple dimensions of emotion regulation. In addition, previous findings have not always been consistent. The present meta-analysis aimed to characterize associations between anger and emotion regulation strategies (i.e., avoidance, acceptance, distraction, reappr

Extrinsic emotion regulation motives in dyads of friends.

Due to the central role friendships play in young adulthood, it is crucial to understand factors that help foster high-quality bonds. The present study examined associations between extrinsic emotion regulation motives and relationship quality in friendship dyads. A sample of 105 young adult dyads (N = 210; Mage = 19.5 years, SDage = 1.2 years) completed a survey assessing their motives for engaging in extrinsic emotion regulation with each other and the constructive and destructive behaviors in their friendship. Actor-partner interdependence models indicated motivation to help a friend regula

Mindfulness and cognitive emotion regulation in pediatric misophonia.

Misophonia is characterized by decreased tolerance of ordinary human-generated trigger sounds and associated visual stimuli (e.g., chewing, sniffing, lip smacking), coupled with intense affective reactions. The disorder often begins during childhood or adolescence and is associated with impairment and distress in numerous life domains. Research has begun to examine the underlying psychological mechanisms of misophonia in adults, but studies in youth are limited. Trait mindfulness (i.e., nonjudgmental and nonavoidant present-moment awareness) and cognitive emotion regulation (i.e., cognitive pr

Understanding the benefits of extrinsic emotion regulation in depression.

Depression is a serious psychiatric illness that negatively affects people's feelings, thoughts, and actions. Providing emotion regulation support to others, also termed Extrinsic Emotion Regulation (EER), reduces depressive symptoms such as perseverative thinking and negative mood. In this conceptual review paper, we argue that EER may be especially beneficial for individuals with depression because it enhances the cognitive and affective processes known to be impaired in depression. Behavioral studies have shown that EER recruits processes related to cognitive empathy, intrinsic emotion regu

A Lesion-Derived Brain Network for Emotion Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation has been linked to specific brain networks based on functional neuroimaging, but networks causally involved in emotion regulation remain unknown. METHODS: We studied patients with focal brain damage (N = 167) who completed the managing emotion subscale of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, a measure of emotion regulation. First, we tested whether patients with lesions to an a priori network derived from functional neuroimaging showed impaired emotion regulation. Next, we leveraged lesion network mapping to derive a de novo brain network for em

Cholinergic system in sleep regulation of emotion and motivation.

Sleep profoundly regulates our emotional and motivational state of mind. Human brain imaging and animal model studies are providing initial insights on the underlying neural mechanisms. Here, we focus on the brain cholinergic system, including cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain, ventral striatum, habenula, and brain stem. Although much is learned about cholinergic regulations of emotion and motivation, less is known on their interactions with sleep. Specifically, we present an anatomical framework that highlights cholinergic signaling in the integrated reward-arousal/sleep circuitry, a

Emotion Regulation Flexibility in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: People differ in their affective styles, which refers to habitual use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies. Previous research has shown that mental health is associated with an individual's adaptive flexibility of emotion regulation strategies rather than any one particular ER strategy. METHODS: The present study employed a person-centered approach using latent profile analyses to distinguish patients with generalized anxiety disorder based on their responses on an affective styles measure. RESULTS: Results of the latent profile analysis supported a three-class solution. Class 1

Emotion regulation difficulties in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation difficulties are implicated in psychological disorders but their role in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is unclear. Two studies examining these difficulties in OCD are presented. METHOD: A community sample (Study 1; n = 306) and a clinical OCD sample (Study 2; n = 59) completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and measures of depression, anxiety, and OCD. In Study 2, the OCD sample was compared to a matched control group (n = 59, selected from Study 1). RESULTS: In Study 1, OCD was positively correlated with DERS total and subscale scores

Autobiographical remembering regulates emotions: a functional perspective.

Emotional deviation has been considered an essential factor in emotion regulation, in that, attempts to compensate for the deviation is reflected on cognitive processes. In the present study, we focused on autobiographical remembering and tested the functional role of memory on emotion regulation. We specifically examined the congruence effect in individuals' subsequent memory reports after recalling emotional events. Individuals were randomly assigned to three groups to report either sadness or anger evoking events or emotionally unspecified events that they experienced in the last five years

Criterion and incremental validity of the emotion regulation questionnaire.

Although research on emotion regulation (ER) is developing, little attention has been paid to the predictive power of ER strategies beyond established constructs. The present study examined the incremental validity of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross and John, 2003), which measures cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, over and above the Big Five personality factors. It also extended the evidence for the measure's criterion validity to yet unexamined criteria. A university student sample (N = 203) completed the ERQ, a measure of the Big Five, and relevant cognitive

Emotion regulation deficits in intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by repeated acts of affective aggression. Despite the diagnostic emphasis on the failure to control aggressive impulses, there is little research on affective processes and emotion regulation in IED; however, this research suggests possible dysfunctions in experiences of emotional intensity and lability. The hypothesis in the present study was that compared to individuals with other psychiatric disorders, and psychologically healthy individuals, individuals with IED experience greater negative affect intensity and em
