[Psychopathological symptoms in atypical viral hemorrhagic tick-borne encephalitis].

A 17 year old boy was admitted because of symptoms of a catatonic syndrome. During the diagnosis we ascertained that there was bleeding from the central nervous system of unknown origin. The intensification of neurological and general symptoms/among others-hyperthermia/suggested haemorrhagic encephalitis, which was confirmed by the viral investigation of the cerebrospinal fluid (tick-borne encephalitis). We describe this case because viral encephalitis rarely has haemorrhagic effects. Usually tick-borne encephalitis is of diphasic type with the attacks of "epilepsia partialis continua", which

Beneficial and detrimental functions of microglia during viral encephalitis.

Microglia are resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS) with multiple functions in health and disease. Their response during encephalitis depends on whether inflammation is triggered in a sterile or infectious manner, and in the latter case on the type of the infecting pathogen. Even though recent technological innovations advanced the understanding of the broad spectrum of microglia responses during viral encephalitis (VE), it is not entirely clear which microglia gene expression profiles are associated with antiviral and detrimental activities. Here, we review novel approache

Monoclonal antibody against Saint Louis encephalitis prM viral protein.

Saint Louis encephalitis virus belongs to Flavivirus genus; Flaviviridae family jointly with other medically important flaviviruses including dengue virus and West Nile virus. The biological properties and functions of prM flavivirus protein are under investigation due to its importance in the generation of infectious virion and host interactions. Monoclonal antibodies have become powerful tools in this approach. Also the use of monoclonal antibodies has been successfully applied for antigenic analysis, clinical diagnosis and treatments. Here, using an immunofluorescence assay we describe a mo

Rabies viral encephalitis with proable 25 year incubation period!

We report a case of rabies viral encephalitis in a 48-year-old male with an unusually long incubation period, historically suspected to be more than 20 years. The case was referred for histological diagnosis following alleged medical negligence to the forensic department. The histology and immunocytochemical demonstration of rabies viral antigen established the diagnosis unequivocally. The case manifested initially with hydrophobia and aggressive behavior, although he suddenly went to the bathroom and drank a small amount of water. History of dog bite 25 years back was elicited retrospectively

[Progressive human viral encephalitis associated to a bat bite].

INTRODUCTION: Human rabies is a rapidly progressive encephalitis that is transmitted by the bites of an infected mammal. METHODS: In June 2004, a male patient was admitted to a hospital emergency department after a 5-days history of progressive right arm pain, paresthesias and muscle weakness. He reported contact with a sick bat 5 weeks before admission. He suffered steady neurologic decline with fever, confusion, disorientation, hydrophobia and aerophobia the following day. The patient died two days later. RESULTS: Postmortem histopathology showed perivascular mononuclear infiltration and e

[Cerebrospinal fluid cytology of acute viral encephalitis and meningitis].

Using cytological examination, the cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) of 98 patients with acute viral encephalitis was investigated. We found 81.4% activated lymphocytes and 5.8% plasma cells in CSF in the first week. In addition, various lymphoid features were disclosed in association: mitosis, binucleation, abnormal nuclear lobulation, Russell bodies, and morula in plasma cells. These cellular changes specifically existed in CSF of acute viral encephalitis, which were helpful to distinguish the said disease from tuberculous melitis and multiple sclerosis.

Emergence of Chandipura viral encephalitis in India: a strategic approach to combat a fatal viral epidemic.

Vector-borne viral encephalitis is currently a significant public health concern worldwide. Factors such as climate change, urbanization, rapid land development, globalization of trade, increased intercontinental travel, and ecological disruptions are contributing to the emergence of many viral diseases. Chandipura virus encephalitis (CHPVE) is one of the prominent emerging viral diseases, quickly becoming a serious health threat. CHPVE is an acute, febrile viral illness with a high-case fatality rate. The disease was first identified in 1965 in Chandipura, Nagpur district of Maharashtra, duri

Mapping Extracellular Space Features of Viral Encephalitis to Evaluate the Proficiency of Anti-Viral Drugs.

The extracellular space (ECS) is an important barrier against viral attack on brain cells, and dynamic changes in ECS microstructure characteristics are closely related to the progression of viral encephalitis in the brain and the efficacy of antiviral drugs. However, mapping the precise morphological and rheological features of the ECS in viral encephalitis is still challenging so far. Here, a robust approach is developed using single-particle diffusional fingerprinting of quantum dots combined with machine learning to map ECS features in the brain and predict the efficacy of antiviral enceph

Clinical Features of Children With Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Encephalitis Following Viral Encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDARE) can occur after herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) and Japanese encephalitis (JE). We describe the clinical features of children with anti-NMDARE after viral encephalitis. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, and treatment outcomes of these patients. METHODS: We describe the clinical characteristics of 14 children of anti-NMDARE following viral encephalitis treated at National Children's Hospital from January 2021 to December 2022. Patients with evidence of viral reac

Occurrence of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Viral Meningitis and Encephalitis.

Hearing loss in viral neuroinfections is poorly investigated. The present study aimed to clarify if hearing loss can develop in viral meningitis and encephalitis. An OAE (oto-acoustic emission) was measured in adult patients with viral meningitis and encephalitis on the day of admission and 30-60 days after discharge. Frequencies were categorized as Low (1, 1.5, 2 kHz), Mid (3, 4, 5 kHz), Mid-high (6, 7, 8 kHz), and High (9, 10 kHz). An OAE was measured in 41 patients with viral meningitis and 8 patients with encephalitis. Six patients with viral meningitis (15%) experienced a decrease of > 5

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing in the diagnosis of viral encephalitis.

Viral encephalitis requires rapid etiological assessment, yet targeted polymerase chain reaction, serology, culture, and multiplex panels leave many cases unresolved because they depend on prespecified pathogens, sampling time, and specimen biology. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can interrogate DNA and RNA in cerebrospinal fluid without a predefined target and may detect unexpected, rare, opportunistic, or emerging viruses. Its clinical performance, however, is not uniform. In published cohorts, diagnostic yield varies with case selection, reference standards, pathogen burden,

Risk factors for secondary epilepsy in children with viral encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical manifestations of secondary epilepsy (EP) in children with viral encephalitis and to identify any associated risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 130 children with viral encephalitis treated at Lu'an People's Hospital Affiliated with Anhui Medical University between December 2021 and October 2024. Of these, 36 children who developed secondary EP were classified as the EP group, and 94 children without secondary EP were categorized as the non-EP group. The overall incidence of secondary EP, clinical symptoms, cerebrospinal flui
