Demographic and spatial analysis of West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis in Houston, Texas.

This descriptive prevalence study describes the relationships between mosquito density and the presence of arboviruses (in mosquitoes and humans) with various socioeconomic and environmental factors present near the time of teh arbovirus outbreak in Harris County, Texas, in 2002. This study suggests that mosquito density increased if the trap was located in an area with a large number of containers that may inadvertently retain rainwater (P = 0.056). When considering only virus-positive mosquitoes, significant relationships were observed if the trap was located near waste materials (P < 0.001)

Preliminary studies of Aedes bahamensis as a host and potential vector of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

Aedes bahamensis, a recent introduction to the state of Florida, was studied to determine its capability to serve as a host or vector of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. Females were readily infected by inoculation, and had whole body virus titers as high as 10(9.4) mosquito infectious doses 50. Sixty percent of females that had been infected by inoculation were capable of orally transmitting virus. Nearly half of the females feeding on viremic chickens became infected, but not all of these infections disseminated to the head. Vertical transmission of SLE virus to progeny of inoculated fema

Influence of sex and age on natural resistance to St. Louis encephalitis virus infection in mice.

A difference was observed in susceptibility of adult male and female mice to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus as measured by the death rate after intravenous challenge. Female mice that had susceptibility similar to that of males at 2 months of age had increased resistance to SLE virus at 3 and 4 months of age. The increased resistance occurred after sexual maturity, indicating that the resistance factor possibly was related to an aging process in the female. The susceptibility of male mice remained unchanged over the 2- to 4-month period. Neither pregnancy nor castration had any effect on r

Serological detection of St. Louis encephalitis virus and West Nile virus in equines from Santa Fe, Argentina.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) present ecological and antigenic similarities and are responsible for serious human diseases. In addition, WNV is a significant pathogen in terms of equine health. The purpose of our study was to analyse the seroprevalence of SLEV and WNV in equine sera collected in Santa Fe Province, Argentina. The seroprevalence determined using the plaque reduction neutralisation test was 12.2% for SLEV, 16.2% for WNV and 48.6% for a combination of both viruses. These results provide evidence of the co-circulation of SLEV and WNV in equines in Sa

Persistence and amplification of St. Louis encephalitis virus in the Coachella Valley of California, 2000-2001.

The introduction of a St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) genotype new to southeastern California during 2000 was followed by focal enzootic amplification in the Coachella Valley that was detected by seroconversions of 29 sentinel chickens in five of nine flocks of 10 chickens each, isolations of virus from 30 of 538 pools of 50 Culex tarsalis Coquillett females, and collection of 30 positive sera from 2,205 wild birds. This SLE strain over wintered successfully and then amplified during the summer of 2001, with 47 sentinel seroconversions in eight of nine flocks, 70 virus isolations from 719 p

Evaluation of Argentinean Bird Species as Amplifying Hosts for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (Flavivirus, Flaviviridae).

St.Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is an emerging human pathogen flavivirus in Argentina. Recently, it has reemerged in the United States. We evaluated the role as amplifying host of six resident bird species and analyzed their capacity as host during the 2005 encephalitis outbreak of SLEV in Córdoba. Eared Dove, Picui Ground Dove, and House Sparrow were the three species with highest host competence index. At a city level, Eared Dove and Picui Ground Dove were the most important amplifying hosts during the 2005 SLEV human outbreak in Córdoba city. This finding highlighted important difference

First genome sequence of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) isolated from a human in Brazil.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, is a causative agent of encephalitis in the Americas. In Brazil, sporadic cases of SLEV infection have been reported since 1953, but the first outbreak of SLEV in Brazil was identified only in 2007, concomitant with an outbreak of dengue virus (DENV) serotype 3. This finding, along with other reports, indicates that SLEV circulation in Brazil is largely unknown, and there may be epidemiological implications of the co-circulation of SLEV, DENV and other flaviviruses in Brazil. Here, we describe the first

[Serological evidence of St. Louis encephalitis virus circulation in birds from Buenos Aires City, Argentina].

Our goal was to determine the presence of neutralizing antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in sera of wild and domestic birds from Buenos Aires City, Argentina. From October 2012 to April 2013, 180 samples were collected and processed by the microneutralization technique. A 7.2% of the sampled birds were seropositive for SLEV, while no seropositive birds for WNV were detected.

Severe winter freezes enhance St. Louis encephalitis virus amplification and epidemic transmission in peninsular Florida.

Mosquito-borne arboviral epidemics tend to strike without warning. The driving force for these epidemics is a combination of biotic (vector, amplification host, and virus) and abiotic (meteorological conditions, especially rainfall and temperature) factors. Abiotic factors that facilitate the synchronization and interaction of vector and amplification host populations favor epidemic amplification and transmission. In Florida, epidemics of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, SLEV) have been preceded by major freezes one or two winters before the onset of h

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus to autogenously developed eggs of Aedes atropalpus mosquitoes.

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus was demonstrated by a strain of Aedes atropalpus mosquitoes from Garrett County, MD. Five-day-old parental females containing fully formed autogenous eggs were infected by intrathoracic inoculation. St. Louis encephalitis virus was detected in batches of fertilized eggs and fourth instar larvae. Estimated filial infection rates of approximately 1% were observed for both eggs and larvae.

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus in Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Córdoba, Argentina.

Arbovirus vector transmission is interrupted when vector abundance decreases or disappears in temperate regions during the winter season. Although the primary overwintering mechanism for many arboviruses in nature remains unknown, vertical transmission is one potential mechanism. Vertical transmission functions as an overwintering mechanism for St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) in temperate areas of Argentina, where SLEV is endemic. The aim of this project was to detect vertical transmission of SLEV in Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. Under laboratory conditions, SLEV vertical transmission

Antibody prevalence of St. Louis encephalitis virus in avian hosts in Los Angeles, California, 1986.

A study was conducted to determine the pattern of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus activity in the avian populations of the Los Angeles metropolitan area in 1986. In total, 679 birds of 42 species were captured at 7 study sites. The overall prevalence of SLE neutralizing (N) antibody of 3% indicated enzootic transmission. Antibody prevalences were higher in birds sampled in the central part of the metropolitan area, which was consistent with other epidemiologic data. The use of specific avian species as sentinels for future surveillance of SLE virus activity was suggested.

Partial nucleotide sequence of St. Louis encephalitis virus RNA: structural proteins, NS1, ns2a, and ns2b.

cDNA clones of the St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus genome have been obtained and the nucleotide sequence of 4.7 kb corresponding to the 5' terminal half of the genome determined. The genome contains a 5' noncoding region of 98 nucleotides followed by a single continuous open reading frame that encodes three structural proteins in the order capsid (C), membrane precursor (prM)-membrane (M), and envelope (E). Immediately following the C-terminus of E are located nonstructural proteins NS1 through NS3. The SLE amino acid sequence homology with yellow fever (YF), Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE

Geographic variation among St. Louis encephalitis virus strains in the viremic responses of avian hosts.

We studied the capacity of 44 strains of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus to induce viremia in an epidemiologically important wild avian host, the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). Selected virus strains were also inoculated at varying doses into 3-week-old chicks. Viremic responses were analyzed in terms of the proportion of inoculated nestling and adult birds which became viremic, the mean duration and the mean peak titer of viremia. Infectivity of avian sera was determined by plaque assay in primary duck embryo cell cultures. The susceptibility of the House Sparrow to viremic infection w

Evaluation of St. Louis encephalitis virus/dengue virus type 4 antigenic chimeric viruses in mice and rhesus monkeys.

To develop a live attenuated virus vaccine against St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus, two antigenic chimeric viruses were generated by replacing the membrane precursor and envelope protein genes of dengue virus type 4 (DEN4) with those from SLE with or without a 30 nucleotide deletion in the DEN4 3' untranslated region of the chimeric genome. Chimeric viruses were compared with parental wild-type SLE for level of neurovirulence and neuroinvasiveness in mice and for safety, immunogenicity, and protective efficacy in rhesus monkeys. The resulting viruses, SLE/DEN4 and SLE/DEN4Delta30, had great

Experimental passage of St. Louis encephalitis virus in vivo in mosquitoes and chickens reveals evolutionarily significant virus characteristics.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV; Flaviviridae, flavivirus) was the major cause of epidemic flaviviral encephalitis in the U.S. prior to the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) in 1999. However, outbreaks of SLEV have been significantly more limited then WNV in terms of levels of activity and geographic dispersal. One possible explanation for these variable levels of activity is that differences in the potential for each virus to adapt to its host cycle exist. The need for arboviruses to replicate in disparate hosts is thought to result in constraints on both evolution and host-specific ad

Persistent West Nile virus transmission and the apparent displacement St. Louis encephalitis virus in southeastern California, 2003-2006.

West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) invaded the Colorado Desert biome of southern California during summer 2003 and seemed to displace previously endemic St. Louis encephalitis virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, SLEV, an antigenically similar Flavivirus in the Japanese encephalitis virus serocomplex). Western equine encephalomyelitis virus (family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus, WEEV), an antigenically distinct Alphavirus, was detected during 2005 and 2006, indicating that conditions were suitable for encephalitis virus introduction and detection.
