Cystic forms of typically solid pancreatic tumors.

In addition to the well-known cystic lesions, the differential diagnosis of pancreatic cysts also includes cystic counterparts (or cystic change in) otherwise typically solid tumors of this organ. Pancreatic endocrine neoplasms (islet cell tumors) and ductal adenocarcinomas sometimes undergo cystic degeneration, the latter usually due to necrosis. Also, although acinar cell carcinoma is typically a solid tumor, its rare cystic counterpart, "acinar cell cystadenocarcinoma," has been reported. A rare variant of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma referred to as "large-duct-type" is characterized by

The complex of myxomas, spotty skin pigmentation and endocrine overactivity (Carney complex): imaging findings with clinical and pathological correlation.

The complex of myxomas, spotty skin pigmentation and endocrine overactivity, or Carney complex (CNC), is a familial multiple endocrine neoplasia and lentiginosis syndrome. CNC is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and is genetically heterogeneous. Its features overlap those of McCune-Albright syndrome and other multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes. Spotty skin pigmentation is the major clinical manifestation of the syndrome, followed by multicentric heart myxomas, which occur at a young age and are the lethal component of the disease. Myxomas may also occur on the skin (eyelid,

Safety of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have been in use for 20 years. There have been concerns about their safety in patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). The reports of GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R)-driven proliferation of C-cell neoplasms in rodent studies had led to the black-box warning against their use in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. In this review, we have attempted to evaluate the physiological and pathological expression of GLP-1Rs in various endocrine organs and summarize the preclinical and clinical evidence regar

Recurrent Adenomatous Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Middle Ear: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumor (MEANT) poses a diagnostic challenge. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific. Definite diagnosis is made by histopathological analysis of the tumor after a complete surgical resection based on an extensive computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (CT/MRI). Controversial terminology of the neoplasm arises from the differentiation of this tumor composed of both endocrine and exocrine glands. Middle ear (ME) localization is rare and less aggressive than gastrointestinal tract or lung localizations. Nevertheless, clinical and CT/MRI analyses are necessa

Genetic testing by cancer site: endocrine system.

Numerous hereditary syndromes, caused by mutations in multiple tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes, can cause tumors in organs of the endocrine system. The primary syndromes (and genes) addressed here include multiple endocrine neoplasia types 1 and 2 (MEN1 and RET genes), Cowden syndrome (PTEN), hereditary pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma syndromes (multiple genes), and von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). Clinical genetic testing is available for each of these syndromes and is generally directed to individuals with endocrine or other tumors and additional features suggestive of a hereditary syndr

Incidentally findings of bilateral giant adrenal myelolipoma: Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Adrenal myelolipoma (AML) is a rare, benign neoplasm of the adrenal gland often found incidentally during medical examinations for unrelated conditions. This case study presents a 39-year-old male patient with a particularly large AML, weighing 11 kg upon surgical removal, potentially making it the largest documented tumor in medical literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old male presenting with abdominal distension and clinical manifestations of Cushing syndrome was discovered to have sizable adrenal masses. Initial pre-operative fine-needle aspiration biopsy

Immunohistochemical characterization of intestinal neoplasia in zebrafish Danio rerio indicates epithelial origin.

Spontaneous neoplasia of the intestinal tract in sentinel and moribund zebrafish Danio rerio is common in some zebrafish facilities. We previously classified these tumors as adenocarcinoma, small-cell carcinoma, or carcinoma otherwise unspecified based on histomorphologic characteristics. Based on histological presentation, the primary differential diagnosis for the intestinal carcinomas was tumor of neuroendocrine cells (e.g. carcinoids). To further characterize the phenotype of the neoplastic cells, select tissue sections were stained with a panel of antibodies directed toward human epitheli

[Genetics of endocrine tumours].

Major advances have been made in the understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying endocrine tumorigenesis, through the study of several syndromes of genetic predisposition and the identification of the genes involved. The syndrome of type 1 multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN-1) is one of the best known; this autosomal dominant hereditary syndrome predisposes to the development of endocrine tumors of the pituitary, the parathyroids, the foregut and the adrenals. The responsible gene, known as MEN-1, encodes an original protein, menin, involved in several major cellular functions, such as t

Update on the management of parathyroid tumors.

Parathyroid tumors are virtually always benign with an estimated incidence of parathyroid carcinoma causing hyperparathyroidism in only .017% of cases. Virtually all parathyroid neoplasms, including the rare parathyroid carcinoma, are functional and discussion of the management of parathyroid tumors is tantamount to the discussion of primary hyperparathyroidism. The biochemical diagnostic criteria with rare exception is definitive, and the key issue with this functional benign endocrine neoplasm is when to recommend operation and how to ensure optimal results in this curable disease. Patients

[A case of endocrine carcinoma of the sigmoid colon].

We report a case of endocrine carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. A 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of constipation and bloody stool. Colonoscopy showed a mass lesion with irregular ulceration in the sigmoid colon. He was given a diagnosis of the poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the colon, and underwent sigmoidectomy with dissection of the lymph nodes. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of the resected specimen revealed endocrine carcinoma. Endocrine carcinoma of the colon is rare, and the prognosis is very poor. We discuss this case with references.

MEN1, MEN4, and Carney Complex: Pathology and Molecular Genetics.

Pituitary adenomas are a common feature of a subset of endocrine neoplasia syndromes, which have otherwise highly variable disease manifestations. We provide here a review of the clinical features and human molecular genetics of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 1 and 4 (MEN1 and MEN4, respectively) and Carney complex (CNC). MEN1, MEN4, and CNC are hereditary autosomal dominant syndromes that can present with pituitary adenomas. MEN1 is caused by inactivating mutations in the MEN1 gene, whose product menin is involved in multiple intracellular pathways contributing to transcriptional con

Multimodality imaging of endocrine immune related adverse events: a primer for radiologists.

Immune-related endocrine adverse events occur in up to one third of patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the multimodality imaging features of the different immune-related endocrine adverse events. In this article, we will introduce the different types of immune checkpoint inhibitors used in clinical practice, and for each endocrine organ affected we will describe the clinical presentation, the multimodality imaging features at presentation and after treatment, and the possible differential diagnosis.

Biological poisons targeting the pituitary gland: insights across the five kingdoms.

The pituitary gland, as a central regulator of endocrine function, may be affected by a wide range of biologically derived harmful substances present in nature. While most available literature focuses on neoplasms, trauma or autoimmune disorders, the potential impact of natural toxins and poisons on pituitary function remains underexplored. This narrative review addresses the effects of acute or chronic exposure to harmful agents originating from the five biological kingdoms-Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Monera, and Protista-on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Drawing on clinical reports, experime

Surgical management of nonmultiple endocrine neoplasia endocrinopathies: state-of-the-art review.

The development of genetic testing has given patients with familial endocrine diseases the opportunity to be identified earlier in life. The importance of this technological advancement cannot be underestimated, as some of these heritable diseases have significant potential for malignancy. This article focuses on the identification and surgical management of familial endocrinopathies of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas. Familial endocrinopathies discussed include hereditary nonmedullary carcinoma of the thyroid, Cowden disease, familial adenomatous polyposis, Carney compl

Endocrine tumors as part of inherited tumor syndromes.

The endocrine system is an embryological diverse system consisted of a variety of glands, such as pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, adrenal, endocrine pancreas, and the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Endocrine tumor can be presented as a sporadic event, or as part of an inherited tumor syndrome. During the past century, inherited tumor syndromes have emerged as an important group of diseases. With the growing knowledge of each inherited tumor syndrome in the molecular genetic level, many changes in clinical management have occurred. This review focuses on the endocrine tumors involving the pitu

COVID-19 Vaccine-Induced Expansion of Pituitary Adenoma: A Case Report.

A pituitary adenoma is an insidious and slow-growing neoplasm of the pituitary gland. No definitive aggravating factors have currently been reported for pituitary adenoma enlargement. Our case demonstrates that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine may be one of the risk factors aggravating tumor expansion. A 60-year-old woman experienced visual loss in her left eye for three days. Eight days before presentation or five days before visual loss, she received the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The visual field showed bitemporal superior quadrantanopic scotoma, prominent on the le
