Pathology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies of endocrine disorders and their cardiac complications.

The cardiovascular system is affected by a multitude of endocrine disorders, including dysfunction of the thyroid, calcium, glucocorticoids, insulin/glucose, and growth hormone axes. Since most of these changes in the cardiovascular system are reversible when treated, early diagnosis is important, as if left untreated, they may become fatal. This review focuses on the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, pathology, and treatment of patients with these endocrine diseases who present with a variety of cardiovascular manifestations. Neuroendocrine tumors presenting with the carcinoid syndrome

Endocrine diseases and the liver.

Liver disease and endocrine disorders, both common in the general population, have a bidirectional and complex relationship. Certain liver diseases are more commonly associated with endocrine disorders, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and primary biliary cirrhosis. There may be an association between hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as thyroid disorders, and sex hormonal preparations may cause specific hepatic lesions. The presence of relative adrenal insufficiency in patients with end-stage liver disease may have therapeutic implications in pa

[Cutaneous signs of endocrinopathies].

Some cutaneous lesions accompany or reveal endocrine disorders. Identifying the endocrinopathy is very important because it sometimes allows corrective rather than symptomatic treatment. The most frequenly involved diseases include thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, the auto-immune disorders of thyroid, Cushing syndrome, Addison disease, acromegaly, androgen-dependent disorders, hypopituitarism, hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism and diabetes mellitus.

Endocrine disease.

The effects of endocrine disease on bone mass continue to attract attention. Investigations include the effects on the skeleton of thyroid disease, primary hyperparathyroidism, and their treatment. The effect of growth hormone replacement in adults with panhypopituitarism has also been investigated; children with treated growth hormone deficiency appear to reach adulthood with low bone mass. The indications for surgery in asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism have recently been reviewed. The associations between autoimmune thyroid disease and connective tissue disease have been investigated

Gastrointestinal hormones.

The availability of pure intestinal hormones and the development of radioimmunoassays for their measurement has expedited research into many aspects of gastrointestinal endocrinology. A complex balance evidently exists between the different intestinal hormones and also the rest of the endocrine system. Polyendocrinopathies have been described, and, so far, two diseases due to intestinal hormone excess (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and the syndrome of watery diarrhea, hypokalemia and achlorhydria) elucidated. It seems likely that many more gastrointestinal endocrine diseases await discovery.

[Interrelations of disorders of the endocrine and immune systems of patients with malignant melanoma].

Investigations of endocrine and immune systems in melanoma patients gave evidence that such patients develop disorders of functions between thymus, on the one hand, and those of the pineal gland, pituitary, adrenal cortex and gonads, on the other, which are important in the pathogenesis of alterations in cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. The author recommends the administration to melanoma patients of either preparations of thymus itself or those with thymosin-like activity, as well as biologically active factors of the pineal gland which normalize metabolic changes in the body.

[Pheochromocytoma in multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A associated with pulmonary tuberculosis presenting as abdominal pain: a case report and literature review].

Pheochromocytoma is a catecholamine-producing neoplasm that may occur sporadically or associated with hereditary diseases, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia. The classic symptoms are headache, sweating, and palpitations and are attributed to the sympathetic nervous system activity, usually presenting as paroxysms. On the other hand, pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease considered a public health problem in many countries, whose incidence depends on risk factors such as immunosuppression. It is well known that endocrine-tumor diseases such as multiple endocrine neoplasia can predi

New perspectives for gene therapy in endocrinology.

Gene therapy for endocrine diseases represents an exciting new type of molecular intervention that may be a curative one. Endocrine disorders that might be treated by gene therapy include monogenic diseases, such as GH deficiency and hypothalamic diabetes insipidus, and multifactorial diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, obesity and cancer. Premises seem promising for endocrine tumours, but many combined approaches of cell and gene therapy are foreseeable also for other endocrine disorders. This review outlines the principles of gene therapy, describes the endocrine disorders that might take a

Regulatory mechanisms and research progress of astrocytes in the neuro-endocrine-immune network.

The neuro-endocrine-immune (NEI) network is a key regulatory network that maintains organismal homeostasis and participates in stress responses. Its function depends on the dynamic coupling among the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Astrocytes, as abundant and functionally diverse glial cells in the central nervous system, are increasingly recognized as important participants in the NEI network. Growing evidence indicates that astrocytes do not merely provide structural support in the traditional sense, but also exhibit marked regional heterogeneity and functional diversity. Through bro

Progress on Direct Regulation of Systemic Immunity by the Central Nervous System.

This article reviews the research progress on the direct regulation of the immune system by the central nervous system (CNS). The traditional "neuro-endocrine-immune" network model has confirmed the close connection between the CNS and the immune system. However, due to the complex mediating role of the endocrine system, its application in clinical treatment is limited. In recent years, the direct regulation of the peripheral immune system through the CNS has provided new methods for the clinical treatment of neuroimmune-related diseases. This article analyzes the changes in the peripheral imm

The Influence of Season on Endocrine Testing in Equids.

Endocrine function in equids is strongly influenced by season, with photoperiod as the primary driver and additional modulation by factors such as breed, geography, age, and nutrition. These seasonal effects have important implications for the interpretation of endocrine diagnostic tests. Circannual rhythms influence pituitary activity, resulting in predictable seasonal variation in adrenocorticotropic hormone concentrations and forming the basis for seasonally adjusted diagnostic thresholds for pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction. Seasonal effects on insulin dynamics are less understood but

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Infectious Diseases: From Endocrine Disruption to Immunosuppression.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are hormonally active compounds in the environment that interfere with the body's endocrine system and consequently produce adverse health effects. Despite persistent public health concerns, EDCs remain important components of common consumer products, thus representing ubiquitous contaminants to humans. While scientific evidence confirmed their contribution to the severity of Influenza A virus (H1N1) in the animal model, their roles in susceptibility and clinical outcome of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cannot be underestimated. Since its emergence i

The prevalence of autoimmune disorders among patients with primary ovarian failure.

Eighty-one patients who had a diagnosis of primary ovarian failure were studied to determine its possible association with autoimmune disorders. All 81 patients displayed 46,XX chromosome complements. On ovarian biopsy, either few or no follicles were demonstrated in 79 patients, and, in two patients, primordial follicles were more abundant. The two patients with a large number of primordial follicles had normal function of other endocrine organs; however, 15 of the 79 patients demonstrating few or no ovarian follicles had associated failure of other endocrine glands, and one patient had myast
