Bio-accumulation of organic contaminants in Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins: Preliminary unique features of the brain and testes.

There is little information about the residue levels and congener composition of organic contaminants (OCs) in cetaceans. In the present study, we investigated the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the blubber, blood, brain and testes of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) stranded in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China. The lowest blubber/tissue partition coefficients were found for sum hexachlorocyclohexanes (ΣHCHs) and ΣPAHs, while the highest were in ΣPCBs and sum dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes

Organochlorine pesticide residues in dried cocoa beans obtained from cocoa stores at Ondo and Ile-Ife, Southwestern Nigeria.

Levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined in dried cocoa beans obtained from cocoa produce stores at Ondo and Ile-Ife, Southwestern Nigeria. Cocoa beans samples were sun dried to a constant weight, pulverized and soxhlet extracted with dichloromethane to obtain the OCPs. Qualitative identification and quantitative evaluation of the extracted OCPs after clean-up on silica gel were accomplished with the aid of a Gas Chromatography coupled with an Electron Capture Detector (GC-ECD). Levels of OCPs in cocoa beans from Ondo had a mean range of ND (p, p'-DDE) to 82.17 ± 54.53 ng/g (

Highly-sensitive aptasensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer between l-cysteine capped ZnS quantum dots and graphene oxide sheets for the determination of edifenphos fungicide.

With the advantages of excellent optical properties and biocompatibility, single-strand DNA-functionalized quantum dots have been widely applied in biosensing and bioimaging. A new aptasensor with easy operation, high sensitivity, and high selectivity was developed by immobilizing the aptamer on water soluble l-cysteine capped ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Graphene oxide (GO) sheets are mixed with the aptamer-QDs. Consequently, the aptamer-conjugated QDs bind to the GO sheets to form a GO/aptamer-QDs ensemble. This aptasensor enables the energy transfer based on a fluorescence resonance energy trans

Radiographic OA, bone marrow lesions, higher body mass index and medial meniscal root tears are significantly associated with medial meniscus extrusion with OA or medial meniscal tears: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Medial meniscus extrusion (MME) refers to the protrusion of the medial meniscus beyond the tibial edge by more than 3 mm, leading to a deficiency of the hoop strain. MME commonly occurs in conjunction with osteoarthritis (OA) or medial meniscal tears (MMT). However, factors associated with concomitant MME in patients with OA or MMT have not been systematically reviewed. This study aims to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify factors associated with concomitant MME in OA or MMT. METHODS: The systematic review of the literature was performed according to PRISMA. A

Metals and organochlorine pesticides in caudal scutes of crocodiles from Belize and Costa Rica.

Despite high animal diversity in the Neotropics and the largely unregulated use and disposal of pesticides and industrial chemicals in Central America, few data exist regarding accumulation of environmental contaminants in Central American wildlife. In this study we examined accumulation of metals and organochlorine (OC) pesticides in caudal scutes of crocodiles from Belize and Costa Rica. Scutes from Morelet's crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) from two sites in northern Belize were analyzed for metals, and scutes from American crocodiles (C. acutus) from one site in Costa Rica were analyzed f

Evaluation of Atypical Antipsychotics for the Facilitation of Weaning Sedation in Mechanically Ventilated Critically Ill Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Sedatives and analgesics are commonly utilized as continuous infusions in the ICU but have complications, including an increase in mechanical ventilation days, ICU length of stay, and delirium. Atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) affect several receptors including muscarinic, histamine, and α-1 adrenergic receptors, which may allow them to act as adjunctive agents to facilitate weaning of continuous infusions. OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is a decrease in sedatives/analgesics requirements with the use of quetiapine and olanzapine in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients

Evaluation of an opioid pain teleconsultation service to address the opioid overdose epidemic in Colorado: A Health First Colorado demonstration project.

BACKGROUND: Since the mid-1990s, more than 500,000 deaths have been attributed to the opioid overdose epidemic, which has created a serious national crisis affecting public health and social and economic welfare. To mitigate these opioid-related overdoses and deaths, interventions targeted at both the patient and community level are needed. OBJECTIVE: This demonstration project sought to determine whether implementation of a provider-to-provider opioid pain teleconsultation service with a pain specialist was correlated with a reduction in inappropriate opioid use and improve health outcomes.
