Mixing an energy drink with an alcoholic beverage increases motivation for more alcohol in college students.

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic rise in the consumption of alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmEDs) in social drinkers. It has been suggested that AmED beverages might lead individuals to drink greater quantities of alcohol. This experiment was designed to investigate whether the consumption of AmEDs would alter alcohol priming (i.e., increasing ratings of wanting another drink) compared with alcohol alone. METHODS: Participants (n = 80) of equal gender attended 1 session where they were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 doses (0.91 ml/kg vodka, 1.82 ml/kg energy drink, 0.91 ml/kg vod

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on overall and exams-related energy drinks consumption among students of the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

BACKGROUND: A pilot study conducted in academic 2017/18 among undergraduates of the University of Sarajevo showed energy drinks to be most frequently consumed during academic activity, less frequently mixed with alcohol in leisure, and rarely in the sports activity. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on energy drinks consumption among undergraduates of the same University, with a focus on their consumption during exams. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted by an online questionnaire. METHODS: The questionnaire, mainly based on the Consortiu

Energy Drink Consumption Among Adolescents in Northern Spain: Habits, Risk Perception and Associated Factors.

Background/Objectives: Energy drinks (EDs) are widely consumed by adolescents despite increasing evidence of adverse health effects. This study aimed to assess ED consumption patterns, risk perception, and associated factors among adolescents in the Principality of Asturias, Spain. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between January and March 2025 in a sample of 1250 adolescents aged 13-18 years. Data were collected using an anonymous questionnaire assessing frequency and age at initiation of ED consumption, motives and contexts of use, perception of adverse effects, and

Suspected Acute Pancreatitis With Peripancreatic Fluid Collection in an Adolescent: A Possible Association With Energy Drink Overconsumption.

Acute pancreatitis is uncommon in adolescents without underlying risk factors. Excessive consumption of energy drink-type beverages has been rarely reported as a possible contributing factor, although causality remains uncertain. We report a 14-year-old male who presented with severe epigastric pain radiating to the back and recurrent vomiting. He had a history of consuming over three bottles of a carbonated energy-type drink daily for eight months. Laboratory evaluation revealed elevated amylase (202 U/L) and lipase (245 U/L), and imaging identifies a peripancreatic fluid collection. Common c

Association between energy drink consumption, and substance use among adolescents: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Energy drinks (ED), which contain high doses of caffeine, are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among young people who may be unaware of the potential risks involved. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of energy drink consumption among 12th-grade students, as well as the relationship between it and substance use, smoking, alcohol, depression, and anxiety. METHODS: The study utilized a cross-sectional research approach. Data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, substance use-related questions, smokin

Impact of Acute Energy Drink Consumption on Heart Rate Variability in Children and Adolescents. A Randomized Trial.

The EDUCATE study investigated the acute impact of energy drink (ED) consumption on heart rate variability (HRV) in children and adolescents, with a focus on how these stimulant-rich beverages influence cardiac autonomic function. Given the popularity of EDs among young people, this study assessed the immediate cardiovascular response to ED intake. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial involved 26 healthy participants aged 10-18 years. Each participant consumed a weight-adjusted ED or placebo in two separate test sessions. HRV was monitored via a 24-h Holter ECG, wi

Energy Drink Exposures and Trends in Children and Young Adults Reported to the National Poison Data System.

BACKGROUND: Energy drinks (EDs) may contain caffeine, amino acids, vitamins, and other ingredients that have been associated with serious adverse effects primarily in children and young adults. OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand ED exposures including demographic trends, clinical effects, and outcomes in the US Poison Centers' National Poison Data System (NPDS) and compared similar reports of caffeinated beverages. METHODS: We analyzed all NPDS closed, human exposures to single-use EDs reported to NPDS between October 1, 2010, and September 30, 2013. RESULTS: NPDS recorded 10,588 cases of

Effects of a ready-to-drink thermogenic beverage on resting energy expenditure, hemodynamic function, and subjective outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Thermogenic supplements are often consumed by individuals seeking to improve energy levels and reduce body fat. These supplements are sold in powdered or ready-to-drink (RTD) forms and consist of a blend of ingredients such as caffeine, green tea extract, and other botanical compounds. While there is evidence that thermogenic supplements can positively affect resting energy expenditure (REE), the effect varies based on the combination of active ingredients. Additionally, there is some concern that thermogenic supplements may cause unwanted side effects on hemodynamic variables, lik

The Pain of Staying Alert: A Case Report and Literature Review on Energy Drink-Induced Acute Pancreatitis.

Energy drink consumption has increased over the past decade. It is associated with several common side effects including diarrhea, heartburn, and dyspepsia. Energy drinks have been proposed as a rare but potential cause of acute pancreatitis. This paper investigates a unique case of energy drink-induced pancreatitis and further explores current literature on this topic. This study stresses the importance of asking all patients presenting with acute pancreatitis about their daily energy drink consumption, especially if the cause is unknown.

The subjective physiological, psychological, and behavioral risk-taking consequences of alcohol and energy drink co-ingestion.

BACKGROUND: The increasingly popular practice among adolescents and young adults of consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has raised concern regarding potential increases in maladaptive drinking practices, negative psychological and physiological intoxication side effects, and risky behavioral outcomes. Comparison of user types has revealed that AmED users report engaging in more risk-taking behavior relative to alcohol users. However, the comparative likelihood of risk-taking according to session type (i.e., AmED vs. alcohol session) remains relatively unknown. Thus, this study wa

Lichen aureus with clonal T cells in a child possibly induced by regular consumption of an energy drink.

Lichen aureus is a rare disease of unknown origin that is classified under the group of pigmented purpuric dermatoses. Its most important differential diagnosis is both clinically and histologically mycosis fungoides, into which the disease can proceed in very rare cases. We describe an unusual multilocular lichen aureus possibly induced by the almost daily consumption of an energy drink. An 11-year-old boy presented with a history of asymptomatic ochre patches on his extremities and abdomen occurring after regular consumption of an energy drink. Histologic examination showed a band-like lymph

Energy Drink-Related Cardiovascular Presentations in Children and Adolescents: A Narrative Review and Practical Guide for Management.

Energy drink (ED) consumption has become increasingly common among children and adolescents, raising questions about its possible effects on cardiovascular health. Owing to ongoing physiological development and sensitivity to stimulant ingredients, minors may experience distinct responses to these beverages. This review provides an overview of ED components and discusses their potential influence on cardiovascular function in younger populations, as well as the range of symptoms reported in clinical settings. Attention is given to how stimulant-containing drinks may affect heart rate, rhythm,
