Enterobacter cloacae from urinary tract infections: frequency, protein analysis, and antimicrobial resistance.

The genus Enterobacter belongs to the ESKAPE group, which includes Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. This group is characterized by the development of resistance to various antibiotics. In recent years, Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacae) has emerged as a clinically important pathogen responsible for a wide range of healthcare-associated illnesses. Identifying Enterobacter species can be challenging due to their similar phenotypic characteristics. The emergence of multidrug-resistant E. cloac

Enterobacter cloacae Complex and CTX-M Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases in Algeria.

We evaluated the β-lactam resistance phenotypes of clinical and environmental strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) isolated from three Algerian hospitals. The first combination of API 20E, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and hsp60 genetic clustering methodologies were carried out for the identification of ECC strains. Our research showed that API 20E and MALDI TOF MS are satisfactory in genus identification of ECC strains, but sequence-based methods are then necessary to discriminate the species and subspecies levels. Elective distribution of resistance to beta-lactams among Enterobacter cloacae genetic clusters.

OBJECTIVES: The Enterobacter cloacae complex (Ecc), routinely referred to as "E. cloacae" in clinical microbiology, encompasses several species with 12 genetic clusters and one sequence crowd that can be identified based on hsp60 sequencing. Little is known about the pathogenicity and distribution of resistance to antibiotics among the Ecc. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this prospective multicentre study, a total of 193 Ecc clinical isolates were collected from 10 academic hospitals distributed nationally across France and identified at the genetic cluster level on the basis of hsp60 sequencing. E.

From Rare to Rising: A Story of Enterobacter-associated Pneumonia Evolving in the Community.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia is a common cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and is the fifth leading cause of death. It is generally caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and some atypical microorganisms. Interestingly, a member of ESKAPE pathogens, mainly Enterobacter cloacae complex, is increasingly showing its presence in the samples of lower respiratory tract specimens. Emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) in these bacteria, including resistance to last-resort carbapenems, has led to an increased interest in this organism causing pneumonia

Study on collateral sensitivity of tigecycline to colistin-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex.

UNLABELLED: The past decade has witnessed the emergence and spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex (CRECC), presenting a significant clinical challenge and urgently demanding new treatment strategies against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study focused on the impact of tigecycline on the susceptibility of CRECC isolates to colistin and the collateral sensitivity in CRECC. Under tigecycline pressure, the resistance of five clinically isolated CRECC strains to colistin was converted from resistance to sensitivity. These mutants exhibited significantly higher expression

Surviving antibiotic treatment as a gut bacterium: genomic characterization of an Enterobacter cloacae.

Enterobacter cloacae complex is a group of common opportunistic pathogens on intensive care units. On intensive care units sepsis is treated with high doses of antibiotics. This treatment does not only eliminate pathogenic bacteria but parts of the microbiome community as well. This leads to an imbalance of the gut microbiome. However, some bacteria can survive such treatment due to certain survival and resistance mechanisms. Not only antibiotic resistance mechanisms but also forming strong communities via biofilm formation promotes cell survival. Here, we investigated the properties of the is

Capsular Polysaccharide Is Essential for the Virulence of the Antimicrobial-Resistant Pathogen Enterobacter hormaechei.

Nosocomial infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) pathogens are on the rise. However, the virulence strategies employed by these pathogens remain elusive. Here, we study the interaction of ECC clinical isolates with human serum to define how this pathogen evades the antimicrobial action of complement, one of the first lines of host-mediated immune defense. We identified a small number of serum-sensitive strains, including Enterobacter hormaechei strain NR3055, which we exploited for the in vitro selection of serum-resistant clones. Comparative genomic

A case report of Enterobacter cloacae endocarditis in a patient with a history of cotton fever.

BACKGROUND: Cotton fever is a self-limited, febrile syndrome occurring after the injection of trace amounts of drugs, in particular heroin, extracted from reused cotton filters. It is characterized by non-specific findings, such as fever, tachycardia, and leucocytosis. The leading pathophysiologic explanation suggests it is the result of direct inoculation of the bloodstream with endotoxins from Gram-negative bacilli of the genus Enterobacter, known to colonize all parts of the cotton plant. Only one prior case report has suggested cotton fever as a potential risk factor of infective endocardi

Risk factors with the development of infection with tigecycline- and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae.

BACKGROUND: Tigecycline is regarded as a last resort treatment for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CREC) infections, and increasing numbers of tigecycline- and carbapenem-resistant E. cloacae (TCREC) isolates have been reported in recent years. However, risk factors and clinical impacts of these isolates are poorly characterized. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-case-control study of hospitalized patients with TCREC infection during the period 2012-2016 in Chongqing, China. Case patients with TCREC and those with CREC were compared to a control group with no

Coproduction of NDM-1 and KPC-2 in Enterobacter hormaechei from Brazil.

The most important resistance mechanism against β-lactam drugs is the production of carbapenemases. In this study, we report the first identification of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-2 and New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)-1 in Enterobacter hormaechei subps. oharae from Brazil. The detection of carbapenemases was done by phenotypic assays, PCR, and DNA sequencing, whereas the identification was performed by conventional techniques, sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene, and hsp60-genotyping. Molecular typing was performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and antimicrobial suscep

A rare case of enterobacter endocarditis superimposed on a mitral valve rheumatoid nodule.

We present the case of a 56-year-old man with longstanding seropositive active erosive and deforming rheumatoid arthritis with no peripheral rheumatoid nodules; he immigrated from the former Soviet Union (where he did not receive any disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) to Israel in 1995. In February 2005, he had a buccogingival mucosal abscess on his lower lip, which was treated by surgical drainage, followed by prolonged antibiotic therapy. One and a half years later, he had 2 episodes of transient ischemic attacks characterized by speech difficulties and moderate weakness on his right sid

Ertapenem resistance among Klebsiella and Enterobacter submitted in the UK to a reference laboratory.

The emergence of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae represents a major public health concern. We investigated ertapenem-resistant clinical isolates of Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp. referred to the UK's national reference laboratory for antibiotic resistance. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined and interpreted according to British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy guidelines. Genes for carbapenemases and CTX-M extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) were sought by polymerase chain reaction, and imipenem hydrolysis was determined by spectrophotometry

[Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of resistance to third-generation cephalosporins in Enterobacter spp].

Enterobacter spp. are becoming increasingly frequent nosocomial pathogens with multiple resistance mechanism to beta-lactam antibiotics. We carried out the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of beta-lactamases in 27 Enterobacter spp. (25 Enterobacter cloacae y 2 Enterobacter aerogenes), as well as the ability of different extended spectrum-lactamase (ESBL) screening methods. Resistance to third generation cephalosporins was observed in 15/27 (63%) isolates. Twelve resistant isolates produced high level chromosomal encoded AmpC beta-lactamase; 6 of them were also producers of PER-2. Resi

In vivo modification of porin activity conferring antibiotic resistance to Enterobacter aerogenes.

Cephalosporins are widely used in chemotherapy of bacterial infections and resistance mechanisms seriously impair their antibacterial activity. Several resistant strains of Enterobacter aerogenes, a frequently isolated nosocomial pathogen, were analyzed. One isolate exhibited a strong modification of the porin antigenic pattern, especially with an immunological probe directed against an epitope located inside the pore lumen. A strong decrease of cefepime uptake was evidenced for this isolate, similarly to ones observed for porin-deficient strains: these kinetics show a serious alteration of th

Efficacy of cefepime in the treatment of infections due to multiply resistant Enterobacter species.

Cefepime is a new cephalosporin with an enhanced antibacterial potency and spectrum. More rapid penetration into many gram-negative bacilli, targeting of multiple penicillin-binding proteins, and resistance to inactivation by many beta-lactamases account for its activity against organisms that have developed resistance to agents such as ceftazidime, cefotaxime, or ceftriaxone. This study identified 16 patients with 17 infections due to Enterobacter species organisms with reduced susceptibility or resistance to ceftazidime. Most isolates were multiply resistant to other beta-lactam drugs as wel
