BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man from Saudi Arabia with a known history of diverticulosis presented with severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. A CT scan revealed circumferential wall thickening of the descending and sigmoid colon with surrounding fat stranding, suggesting a diagnosis of complicated diverticulitis. Additional thick fluid was observed around the affected area. Surgical excision was pursued. A gross examination of two received large bowel segments disclosed marked ulcerated mucosa and wal

UNLABELLED: Background: Basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum. Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is an unusual presentation of the fungal infection that is reported sparsely in the literature, but is an emerging infection in the southwestern United States. Lack of awareness of GIB has resulted in its delayed diagnosis and in extensive morbidity and mortality in patients with GIB.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
CASE REPORT: We report the rare case of a young female with GIB that presented as perforated appendicitis with ab

We describe the histopathologic features of 6 cases of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis examined at 4 Phoenix, AZ, area hospitals during the last 4 years. Resected stomach and intestinal specimens were characterized by marked mural thickening with fibrosis, prominent tissue eosinophil infiltration and palisading granulomatous inflammation around pale fungal hyphae. In 2 cases, there was colonic perforation. Basidiobolus ranarum hyphae (associated with spore-like spherules in 4 cases) were identified within tissue sections; the irregularly branched, thin-walled, occasionally septated hyphae

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis, a fungal infection affecting immunocompetent individuals, is caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, a fungus classified under the order Entomophthorales, which was previously grouped under Zygomycetes. Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is often life-threatening, with a high mortality rate if left untreated; however, favorable outcomes have been achieved with prompt diagnosis and proper management.
CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we present a case of GIB in a 32-year-old Saudi male, and smoker who presented with a 2-month history of mild-to-moderate pain in the right low

The emergence of various diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic made health workers more attentive, and one of the new pathogens is the black fungus (mucormycosis). As a result, millions of lives have already been lost. As a result of the mutation, the virus is constantly changing its traits, including the rate of disease transmission, virulence, pathogenesis, and clinical signs. A recent analysis revealed that some COVID-19 patients were also coinfected with a fungal disease called mucormycosis (black fungus). India has already categorized the COVID-19 patient black fungus outbreak as an epide

Hemolymph enables communication between organs in insects and ensures necessary coordination and homeostasis. Its composition can provide important information about the physiological state of an insect and can have diagnostic significance, which might be particularly important in the case of harmful insects subjected to biological control. Galleria mellonella Linnaeus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a global pest to honey bee colonies. The hemolymph of its larvae was examined after infection with the soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) Batko 1964 (Entomophthorales). It was found

Basidiobolomycosis caused by Basidiobolus ranarum is a rare infection of the subcutaneous tissues in immune-competent patients which occurs predominantly in children and young adults. Primary physicians often misdiagnose the condition owing to its slow, painless, relentless growth, absence of response to antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs and unfamiliarity with this lesion. All cases of subcutaneous basidiobolomycosis in children aged between 1 and 12 years presenting at a tertiary hospital in Pondicherry over a period of 4 years (2007-2011) were analysed. Eight cases were seen and confir

Basidiobolus ranarum (Entomophthoromycotina) very rarely affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. To date, reported paediatric GI basidiobolomycosis cases are 27 worldwide; 19 from Saudi Arabia and 8 from other parts of the world. Often these cases present a diagnostic dilemma, are prone to misdiagnosis and lack of disease confirmation by proper molecular methodologies. The fungal mass removed by surgery is usually sent for conciliar histopathology, isolation by fungal cultures and final molecular testing for basidiobolomycosis. The incidence of basidiobolomycoses, their predisposing factors a

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolomycosis is a fungal infection exhibiting a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations that frequently resemble abdominal malignancies or inflammatory conditions. This study elucidates the characteristic imaging features that can help make an accurate diagnosis. METHODS: We examined pretreatment imaging studies (CT, MRI, ultrasound) of 32 histopathologically proven cases of basidiobolomycosis at a tertiary referral center between 2015 and 2021. Two radiologists, blind to the pathology results, scrutinized the lesions for localization, morphology, enhancement pattern, and an

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB), a rare fungal infection associated with high mortality, has been reported worldwide mainly from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, USA, and Latin America. The clinical manifestations are highly diverse and non-specific depending on the underlying disease, but fever, abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea, constipation and chills have been observed. There are no prominent risk factors for GIB but climatic conditions and life style are related to this infection in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore timely diagnosis and early treatment is a chal

UNLABELLED: Basidiobolomycosis is an uncommon chronic deep fungal infection in which gradually enlarging granulomas form, usually in the subcutaneous fat tissues of the limbs, chest or trunk of immunocompetent hosts, primarily children and young adults. It is caused by the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum. Definitive diagnosis is by microscopy and histopathology. Effective treatments include ketoconazole, itraconazole, potassium iodide and co-trimoxazole. A 3 year old girl presented with ulcerations on the right thigh for one month, and painful swelling of the right leg and right buttock for six mo

Zygomycosis is characterized by tissue invasion with broad, non-septate hyphae of species such as Rhizopus, Rhizomucor, Lichtheimia (Absidia) and Basidiobolus. Basidiobolus ranarum usually causes subcutaneous infection, and gastrointestinal manifestations in immunocompetent patients have rarely been reported. It is difficult to diagnose gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis because of the non-specific clinical presentation and the absence of a definite risk factor. This study identified 14 cases of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis, all of which were diagnosed after surgery by characteristic h

Global declines of amphibian populations are a source of great concern. Several pathogens that can infect the skin have been implicated in the declines. The pathogen most frequently associated with recent die-offs is a chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. A second fungus, Basidiobolus ranarum, was isolated from declining populations of Wyoming toads. A third pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, is an opportunistic bacterium found in healthy frogs, but capable of inducing disease. Among the immune defense mechanisms used by amphibians is the production of antimicrobial peptides in granula
