While numerous studies have examined the factors that influence crash occurrence, there remains a gap in understanding the intricate relationship between built environment, traffic flow, and crash occurrences across different spatial units. This study explores how built environment attributes, and dynamic traffic flow characteristics affect crash frequency by focusing on proposed traffic density-based zones (TDZs). Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from Greater Melbourne, Australia, this research emphasizes on the dynamic traffic flow variables and insights from the Macroscopic Fundamental Dia

Developing nations are adopting transit oriented development (TOD) strategies to decongest their transportation systems. These strategies are often adopted after the preparation of land use plans. The goal of this study was to build a methodology to modify these land uses using soft computing. This can help to achieve alternate land use plans relevant to TOD. The methodology incorporates TOD characteristics and objectives. Global TOD parameters (density, diversity, and distance to transit) were studied. Expert opinions gave weights and ranges for the parameters in an Indian TOD scenario. Rules

BACKGROUND: The Canadian Active Living Environments (Can-ALE) project was developed in 2019 to provide a standardized, pan-Canadian indicator of how supportive neighbourhood built environments are for physical activity and active transportation, enabling comparisons across places and over time. Can-ALE 1.0 produced measures for the 2006 and 2016 census years, but it did not include 2011 or 2021. As well, the data and processing steps were not packaged in a fully reproducible format, limiting longitudinal analyses and replication. In this study, the original measure was replicated and extended

The built environment refers to the objective material environment built by humans in cities for living and production activities. Existing studies have proven that the built environment plays a significant role in human health, but little attention is paid to the elderly in this regard. At the same time, existing studies are mainly concentrated in Western developed countries, and there are few empirical studies in developing countries such as China. Based on POI (point of interest) data and 882 questionnaires collected from 20 neighborhoods in Guangzhou, we employ multilevel linear regression

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the effects of pavement surface condition and other control factors on casualty crashes at signalized intersections. It involved conducting a before and after study for road surface condition and situational factors. It also included assessing the effects of geometric characteristics on safety performance of signalized intersections post resurfacing to control for the effect of pavement surface condition. Pavement surface condition included roughness, rutting, and skid resistance. The control factors included traffic volume, light and surface moisture cond

The importance of psychosocial aspects has been gradually recognised in the field of inclusive design. A critical review of existing literature, however, such as design, healthcare, psychology, and sociology, on psychosocial aspects of inclusivity identifies a two-fold research gap which is a limited understanding of both definition and dimensions of psychosocial inclusivity in the field of inclusive design. Such concept of psychosocial inclusivity is an inherently context-dependent and multi-faceted concept. Accordingly, a 'personal mobility' was focused on in this paper as one key context to

Although studies have indicated that the built environment (BE) is linked to running activity, they are still uncertain about the nonlinear relationship and mediation effect of BE on this activity in high-density Chinese cities. This study used fitness tracker application, street view, social media text, and other multi-sourced data as bases to establish a framework combining the Shapley Additive exPlanation model, restricted cubic splines, and mediation analysis to address the nonlinearity and interpretability of the relationship between BE and running activity. Results of the empirical analy

Despite experiencing health inequities, less is known about neighborhood environments and physical activity among Hispanic/Latino adults compared to other populations. We investigated this topic in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). Hispanic/Latino adults in the San Diego, California area of the U.S. completed measures of overall moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) via accelerometry and domain-specific MVPA via questionnaire at Visits 1 (2008-2011; n = 4086) and 2 (2014-2017; n = 1776), ~6 years apart. 800-m home neighborhood buffers were used to create

As vulnerable road users, elderly pedestrians are more likely to be injured in road crashes due to declining physical and perceptual capabilities. Most previous studies on the influence of the built environment on elderly pedestrian safety focused on intersections or areal units. Using a district of Shanghai as the study area, this research investigated the effects of the built environment at the road segment level with elderly pedestrian collision, taxi tracking point, point of interest, street view image, open street map, land use, housing price, and elderly population datasets. In particula

Linking geospatial neighbourhood design characteristics to health and behavioural data from population-representative cohorts is limited by data availability and difficulty collecting information on environmental characteristics (e.g. greenery, building setbacks, dwelling structure). As an alternative, this study examined the feasibility of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) - machine learning - to measure neighbourhood design using 'street view' and aerial imagery to explore the relationship between the built environment and physical function. This study included 3102 adults aged 45 years

We need a great deal of work on household and day care environmental design. Systematic research, linked to the degree of impairment and to individual lifestyles, is appropriate. I have only scratched the surface of environmental considerations, with some attention to distinguishing the issues of home, community, and institutional environments. It is important that we identify some of the unique priorities in each of these settings. To draw conclusions from institutional settings and apply them to the home is to miss some of the strengths inherent in the home. We have come a long way. Once, it

Exploring the link of characteristics of the built environment and traffic accidents is crucial for enhancing road safety. Prior research has predominantly utilized the "5D" framework to examine how the built environment influences accident rates. However, intersections, which are high-risk areas for traffic accidents, are significantly influenced by their surrounding streetscape features. These features have not been systematically integrated into the existing "5D" framework of the built environment. Moreover, previous studies considered intersections as isolated units, employing analytical m

Fast economic and social changes in recent years in China have brought massive expansion, redevelopment, and restructuring of cities. These changes offer cities the opportunity to improve environmental quality through urban green spaces (UGSs) and to address the challenges of meeting community aspirations. This study explored peoples' minds concerning UGSs in Guangzhou city in south China in relation to the following: (1) knowledge and perception of 25 ecosystem services and 8 negative impacts; (2) attitude toward site condition and management; (3) expectation of landscape design; and (4) pref

Motorcycle casualties in Thailand are strongly concentrated on a small proportion of the road network, yet road infrastructure assessment at the national scale remains constrained by incomplete road-inventory data and the cost of field audits. This study develops an integrated framework for identifying motorcycle crash hotspots and examining their visually observable road-environment correlates. Motorcycle crash records from the Thailand Road Accident Management System (2019-2024) were analysed using Network Kernel Density Estimation (NKDE) on 100 m road segments. The NKDE output is interprete

This critical review examines the complex interplay between slow mobility modes-specifically walking, cycling, and micromobility-and their associated health and environmental impacts. It is timely in view of various global initiatives to promote walkability and cyclability, and a paradigm shift towards people-oriented transport systems. Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we selected 458 papers and conducted detailed content analysis. The paper first identifies key themes related to risk and benefits, pinpointing traffic crashes

INTERVENTION: Governments are investing in safer cycling infrastructure to provide transportation options that support health, mobility, and environmental outcomes; these can be considered population health interventions.
RESEARCH QUESTION: We aimed to measure change from 2022 to 2024 in cycling infrastructure in Canada to understand what and where changes happened, and who was impacted.
METHODS: We extracted data from OpenStreetMap.org (OSM) in 2022 and 2024 and coded them according to the Canadian Bikeway Comfort and Safety (Can-BICS) classification system (high, medium, or low comfort and

Road safety has emerged as a global concern, and bus stops are the major points of concern as they act as interfaces where pedestrians interact with transit vehicles. In order to achieve a safe and sustainable infrastructure at bus stops, it is necessary to assess safety level of bus stops and suggest safety improvement measures. The present work aims to investigate whether design and management deficiencies of bus stops have any effect on safety of passengers and pedestrians. It is also aimed to develop a pro-active approach for evaluating safety level of bus stops by identifying design and m

OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage.
METHODS: Data from the Current Population Survey September 2019 Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement were linked to U.S. county-level data on (1) population-level exposure to CRZ and an index of 10 A

To examine what built environment characteristics improve the health outcomes of human beings is always a hot issue. While a growing literature has analyzed the link between the built environment and health, few studies have investigated this relationship across different spatial scales. In this study, eighteen variables were selected from multi-source data and reduced to eight built environment attributes using principal component analysis. These attributes included socioeconomic deprivation, urban density, street walkability, land-use diversity, blue-green space, transportation convenience,
