Socioeconomic status and environmental noise exposure in Montreal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: This study's objective was to determine whether socioeconomically deprived populations are exposed to greater levels of environmental noise. METHODS: Indicators of socioeconomic status were correlated with LAeq24h noise levels estimated with a land-use regression model at a small geographic scale. RESULTS: We found that noise exposure was associated with all socioeconomic indicators, with the strongest correlations found for median household income, proportion of people who spend over 30% of their income on housing, proportion of people below the low income boundary and with a so

Association between environmental exposure to pesticides and neurodegenerative diseases.

Preliminary studies have shown associations between chronic pesticide exposure in occupational settings and neurological disorders. However, data on the effects of long-term non-occupational exposures are too sparse to allow any conclusions. This study examines the influence of environmental pesticide exposure on a number of neuropsychiatric conditions and discusses their underlying pathologic mechanisms. An ecological study was conducted using averaged prevalence rates of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral degeneration, polyneuropathies, affective psychosis

Environmental toxicology and health effects associated with dinitrotoluene exposure.

Dinitrotoluenes (DNTs) are nitroaromatic compounds appearing as pale yellow crystalline solids at room temperature. Dinitrotoluenes exist as a mixture of 2 to 6 isomers, with 2,4-DNT, and 2,6-DNT being the most significant. About 500 persons are estimated to be potentially exposed yearly to 2,4-DNT and 2,6-DNT during the production of munitions and explosives. The main route of human exposure at ammunition facilities is inhalation, but dermal contact and inadvertent ingestion can also be substantial. In factory workers, exposure to DNTs has been linked to many adverse health effects, including

Cardiovascular disease and occupational exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Results of chemical analysis, animal experiments, and human studies are reviewed, criticized, and found not to support claims of an association between workers exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and occupational coronary heart disease. This review also recommends refinement of the use of dose surrogates, as presently practiced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for regulating indoor emissions from combustion engines, coal furnaces, tobacco leaf processing, rayon viscose manufacturing, and rubber curing. The work standards OSHA uses for regulation of these co

Evaluation of laboratory and environmental exposure systems for protein modification upon gas pollutants and environmental factors.

Chemical modifications of proteins induced by ambient ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are of public health concerns due to their potential to trigger respiratory diseases. The laboratory and environmental exposure systems have been widely used to investigate their relevant mechanism in the atmosphere. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein, we evaluated the two systems and aimed to reduce the uncertainties of both the reactants and products in the corresponding kinetic study. In the laboratory simulation system, the generated gaseous pollutants showed negligible losses. Ten l

Impact of Environmental Exposure on Infant Sleep : The Exposome Approach.

Sleep is fundamental for infant development and health, playing a critical role in cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical growth. However, environmental factors can impact the quality and duration of sleep in infants. This review synthesises current evidence on the associations between environmental chemical exposures and infant sleep outcomes, with a focus on the first 1000 days of life. Infants may be exposed to environmental pollutants before birth, through the placenta, or after birth, via breastfeeding, diet, and external sources such as inhalation, dust contact, or hand-to-mouth exposu

Environmental occurrence, exposure, toxicity, and transformation of benzothiazoles: A review.

Benzothiazoles (BTs) are a class of aromatic heterocyclic compounds consisting of a benzene ring fused with a 1,3-thiazole ring. They have been widely used as vulcanization accelerators, fungicides, corrosion inhibitors, herbicides, anti-cancer drugs, etc., leading to their ubiquitous presence in various environmental media. Numerous studies have demonstrated that BTs exhibit multiple toxic effects. In this review, we systematically summarized research findings on the environmental occurrence, exposure, toxicity, and transformation of BTs. Benzothiazole (BTH) and 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole (2-OH-

Is Environmental Cadmium Exposure Causally Related to Diabetes and Obesity?

Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive toxic metal, present in most food types, cigarette smoke, and air. Most cells in the body will assimilate Cd, as its charge and ionic radius are similar to the essential metals, iron, zinc, and calcium (Fe, Zn, and Ca). Cd preferentially accumulates in the proximal tubular epithelium of the kidney, and is excreted in urine when these cells die. Thus, excretion of Cd reflects renal accumulation (body burden) and the current toxicity of Cd. The kidney is the only organ other than liver that produces and releases glucose into the circulation. Also, the kidney is respon

Associations of exposure to phthalates and environmental phenols with gynecological disorders.

Phthalates and environmental phenols might be associated with some benign diseases that have been found to be hormone-sensitive. Current knowledge on adverse effects of these chemicals among reproductive women is limited and often controversial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the urinary concentration of phthalates and environmental phenols and gynecological disorders from 512 women of reproductive age. The association between chemical concentration and disease in the control and case groups was statistically determined with the questionnaire su

The contribution of environmental exposure to the etiology of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition of heterogeneous etiology. While it is widely recognized that genetic and environmental factors and their interactions contribute to autism phenotypes, their precise causal mechanisms remain poorly understood. This article reviews our current understanding of environmental risk factors of ASD and their presumed adverse physiological mechanisms. It comprehensively maps the significance of parental age, teratogenic compounds, perinatal risks, medication, smoking and alcohol use, nutrition, vaccination, toxic exposures, as well as t

Environmental exposure to perchlorate: A review of toxicology and human health.

Perchlorate pharmacology and toxicology studies date back at least 65 years in the peer-reviewed literature. Repeated studies in animals and humans have demonstrated perchlorate's mechanism of action, dose-response, and adverse effects over a range of doses. The first measurable effect of perchlorate is inhibition of iodine uptake to the thyroid gland. Adequate levels of thyroid hormones are critical for the development of the fetal nervous system. With sufficient dose and exposure duration, perchlorate can reduce thyroid hormones in the pregnant or non-pregnant woman via this mechanism. The d

The impact of exposure to environmental contaminant on hepatocellular lipid metabolism.

Increasing evidences show that ubiquitous perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a representative environmental pollutant, is found to be linked to lipid dysmetabolism. However, the biological mechanism behind this outcome remains uninvestigated. In the present study, we established the PFOA-injured liver in mice to explore the underlying mechanism associated with PFOA-induced lipid disturbance in the liver via a group of biochemical and molecular assays. As results, PFOA-exposed mice showed increased transaminase (ALT), reduced triglyceride and free fatty acid contents in serum, as well as elevated l

Children's Cancer and Environmental Exposures: Professional Attitudes and Practices.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies worldwide have provided substantial evidence of the contributions of environmental exposures to the development of childhood cancer, yet this knowledge has not been integrated into the routine practice of clinicians who care for children with this disease. To identify the basis of this deficit, we sought to assess the environmental history-taking behavior and perceptions of environmental health among pediatric hematologists and oncologists. PROCEDURE: A web-based survey was sent from June to October 2012 to 427 pediatric oncologists, fellows, and nurse practi
