Comparison of potency of ephedrine and mephentermine for prevention of post-spinal hypotension in caesarean section.

The dosages and potency of intravenous mephentermine for prevention of post-spinal hypotension are not available in English literature. This study was designed to determine the minimum effective dose (ED50) of mephentermine and to compare its potency with that of ephedrine for prevention of post-spinal hypotension in parturients undergoing caesarean section. Dixon's up-down method of sequential allocation was used for vasopressor doses. Following administration of spinal anaesthesia, patients received a prophylactic infusion with 50 mg infused over a period of 30 minutes as the initial dose an

[Effect of ephedrine on the blood supply and oxygen regimen of the brain during motion sickness].

In chronic experiments on conscious rabbits it was found by the method of hydrogen clearance and polarography that intravenous injections of ephedrine hydrochloride (1 and 5 mg/kg) attenuate cerebral vessels reactions in vestibular disorders caused by sickness, reduce or prevent an increase of the blood flow in the brain as a whole or in individual cortical structures, exert no significant effect on oxygen tension in the brain.

Efficiently prepared ephedrine alkaloids-free Ephedra Herb extract: a putative marker and antiproliferative effects.

Ephedrine alkaloids (EAs) have been considered the main pharmacologically active substances in Ephedra Herb (, Mao; EH) since they were first identified by Prof. N. Nagai, and are known to induce palpitation, hypertension, insomnia, and dysuria as side effects. Therefore, the administration of drugs containing EH to patients with cardiovascular-related diseases is severely contraindicated. While our previous studies suggest that some of the effects of EH may not be due to EAs, considering their side effects would be expedient to develop a new EAs-free EH extract (EFE). Here, we established a p

Chiral gas chromatographic determination of ephedrine-type alkaloids in dietary supplements containing Má Huáng.

Má Huáng is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from the aerial parts of several Ephedra species (Ephedraceae). These plants produce (-)-ephedrine, (+)-pseudoephedrine, (-)-norephedrine, (+)-norpseudoephedrine, (-)-N-methylephedrine, and (+)-N-methylpseudoephedrine. Racemic and (-)-ephedrine, (+)-pseudoephedrine, and (+/-)-norephedrine (phenylpropanolamine) are used clinically in the United States and are largely synthetic in origin. Current interest in Má Huáng is spurred by reports describing a "thermogenic" (calorie burning) effect provided by mixtures of ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin

Caffeine, ephedrine and methylephedrine were labeled with carbon-11 by the action of methyliodide-11C on theophylline, norephedrine and ephedrine, respectively. Caffeine-11C was prepared in 44 min with a radiochemical yield of 40%, ephedrine-11C in 45 min with a 11% radiochemical yield and methylephedrine-11C in 36 min with a 43% radiochemical yield. When injected in mice intravenously, these products show a high uptake in the liver, the kidney and the blood for caffeine-11C and in the liver and the kidney for ephedrine-11C and methylephedrine-11C. The brain uptake for these products was found

Hemodynamic Effects of Intravenous Ephedrine Administration During General Anesthesia for Radiation Therapy in Cats.

Ephedrine is used as a vasopressor in cats, but the hemodynamic effects of intravenous (IV) administration have not been characterized. This study evaluated the hemodynamic effects of IV ephedrine in 10 cats that developed hypotension during anesthesia. Cats received either saline (SE) or atropine (AE) before ephedrine for hypotension (mean arterial pressure < 60 mmHg). Hemodynamic variables were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model. No significant differences were observed between groups in the response rate (defined as mean arterial pressure ≥ 65 mmHg after ephedrine administration; S

Intraoperative Use of Phenylephrine versus Ephedrine and Postoperative Delirium: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of intraoperative hypotension with phenylephrine may impair cerebral perfusion through vasoconstriction, which has been linked to postoperative delirium. The hypothesis was that intraoperative administration of phenylephrine, compared to ephedrine, is associated with higher odds of postoperative delirium. METHODS: A total of 103,094 hospitalized adults undergoing general anesthesia for noncardiac, non-neurosurgical procedures between 2008 and 2020 at two tertiary academic healthcare networks in Massachusetts were included in this multicenter hospital registry study.

Preoperative ephedrine counters hypotension with propofol anesthesia during valve surgery: a dose dependent study.

The prophylactic use of small doses of ephedrine may counter the hypotension response to propofol anesthesia with minimal hemodynamic changes. One hundred-fifty patients scheduled for valve surgery were randomly assigned into five groups (n = 30 for each) to receive saline, 0.07, 0.1, or 0.15 mg/kg of ephedrine, or phenylephrine 1.5 μg/kg before induction of propofol-fentanyl anesthesia. After induction, patient receiving ephedrine had higher mean arterial pressure, systemic vascular resistance (SVRI), cardiac (CI), stroke volume (SVI), and left ventricular stroke work (LVSWI) indices. Prevention of hypotension during spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section: ephedrine infusion versus fluid preload.

We compared the efficacy of prophylactic ephedrine infusion over fluid preloading in prevention of maternal hypotension during spinal anaesthesia for Caesarean section. Forty-six women undergoing elective Caesarean section at term were allocated randomly to receive either intravenous fluid preloading with Hartmann's solution 20 ml.kg-1 (fluid group) or prophylactic intravenous ephedrine 0.25 mg.kg-1 (ephedrine group). Moderate hypotension was defined as > or = 20% reduction in systolic blood pressure and severe hypotension as > or = 30% reduction in systolic blood pressure. Maternal uterine ci

The efficacy of intramuscular ephedrine in preventing hemodynamic perturbations in patients with spinal anesthesia and dexmedetomidine sedation.

Dexmedetomidine is used for sedation during spinal anesthesia. The sympatholytic effect of dexmedetomidine may exacerbate hypotension and bradycardia with spinal anesthesia. This study investigated the effects of prophylactic intramuscular injection of ephedrine in preventing hypotension and bradycardia occurring through combined use of spinal anesthesia and dexmedetomidine. One hundred sixteen patients scheduled for lower extremity orthopedic surgery were randomized into two groups receiving either ephedrine 20 mg intramuscularly or equivalent amount of 0.9% NaCl, both with dexmedetomidine an

Development and validation of a capillary electrophoresis method for the determination of codeine, diphenhydramine, ephedrine and noscapine in pharmaceuticals.

The present work describes a simple, accurate and rapid method for the separation and simultaneous determination of codeine, diphenhydramine, ephedrine and noscapine present in cough-cold syrup formulations by capillary zone electrophoresis. Factors affecting the separation were the buffer pH and concentration, applied voltage, and presence of additives. Separations were carried out in less than 10 min with a 20 mM sodium tetraborate buffer, pH 8.50. The carrier electrolyte gave baseline separation with good resolution, great reproducibility and accuracy. Calibration plots were linear over at
