Breast Tissue Composition-Why It Matters and How Can We Measure It More Accurately in Epidemiology Studies.

Early-life body size has been consistently associated with breast cancer risk. The direction of the association changes over time, with high birth weight, smaller adolescent body size, and adult weight gain all increasing breast cancer risk. There is also a clear positive association between larger body size and increased breast adipose tissue measured by mammograms, but less is known about how body size changes across life stages affect stromal and epithelial breast tissue. Using breast tissue slides from women with benign breast disease, Oh and colleagues applied machine learning methods to

Epidemiology, Clinical Features, and Use of Early Supportive Measures in PHACE Syndrome: A European Multinational Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: PHACE syndrome is a rare inborn condition characterized by large facial hemangiomas and variable malformations of the arterial system, heart, central nervous system, and eyes. According to Orphanet estimates, the prevalence is <1.0 per million. Data from Europe are limited to small case series, and there are no population-based data available. OBJECTIVES: We conducted the present study to provide population-based estimates of the disease prevalence of PHACE syndrome in children in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. We compared these first systematic data on PHACE syndrome from Eur

EpideMiology and control measures of outBreaks due to Antibiotic-Resistant orGanisms in EurOpe (EMBARGO): a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Improving our understanding of outbreaks due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their control is critical in the current public health scenario. The threat of outbreaks due to ARB requires multifaceted efforts. However, a global overview of epidemiological characteristics of outbreaks due to ARB and effective infection control measures is missing. In this paper, we describe the protocol of a systematic review aimed at mapping and characterising the epidemiological aspects of outbreaks due to ARB and infection control measures in European countries. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

[Epidemiological study and participant-level meta-analysis on ambulatory monitoring and self-measured home blood pressure].

Self-measured blood pressure at home is a more accurate prognosticator than the conventionally measured blood pressure, because of the greater number of readings and the avoidance of the white-coat effect and measurement error. Ambulatory blood pressure recordings also have higher reproducibility and provide a better estimate of usual blood pressure and cardiovascular prognosis in individual. Participant-level meta-analysis showed that these out-of-office blood pressure substantially refines risk stratification at conventional blood pressure levels assumed to carry no or only mildly increased

Exhaled nitric oxide measurements in the first 2 years of life: methodological issues, clinical and epidemiological applications.

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a useful tool to diagnose and monitor eosinophilic bronchial inflammation in asthmatic children and adults. In children younger than 2 years of age FeNO has been successfully measured both with the tidal breathing and with the single breath techniques. However, there are a number of methodological issues that need to be addressed in order to increase the reproducibility of the FeNO measurements within and between infants. Indeed, a standardized method to measure FeNO in the first 2 years of life would be extremely useful in order to meaningfully interp

An example of measurement and reporting of periodontal loss of attachment (LOA) in epidemiological studies: smoking and periodontal tissue destruction.

The measurement and reporting of periodontal disease in epidemiological studies can be complex, with the common indices having well-recognised shortcomings. The aim of this study was to illustrate the use of the periodontal loss of attachment (LOA) approach in investigating the association between cigarette smoking and loss of periodontal attachment in a convenience sample of adults, in order to determine whether or not smoking was a risk indicator for periodontal disease. All participants were given a detailed periodontal clinical examination in two randomly assigned contralateral diagonal qu

Measurement of depressive symptoms in cancer patients: evaluation of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D).

The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is commonly used to measure depressive symptomatology in cancer patients, yet there is little known about the psychometric properties of the measure when applied to a cancer population. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the CES-D with cancer patients. For purposes of comparison, the psychometric properties of the CES-D were assessed both in women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and women with no history of cancer. The CES-D and other study measures were administered to women undergoing trea

Socioeconomic gradients measured by the Yost index and colorectal cancer outcomes: a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood socioeconomic context influences access to colorectal cancer (CRC) care and outcomes, yet its independent contribution to short-term surgical outcomes remains unclear. This study evaluated the associations between neighborhood-level Yost socioeconomic status (SES) and urgent presentation and short-term outcomes among older adults undergoing CRC surgery. METHODS: Medicare beneficiaries aged 66 to 90 years who underwent colectomy or rectal resection for malignant CRC were identified from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare data (2006-2019). Determining the best discriminatory physical functioning outcome measurement instrument for psoriatic arthritis trials: A meta-epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: To empirically compare the discriminant capacities of three outcome measurement instruments for assessment of physical functioning for psoriatic arthritis (PsA): HAQ-DI, SF36-PF and SF36-PCS. METHODS: We applied a network meta-analysis technique in a sample of randomized trials (RCTs) for PsA. For randomized comparison, we calculated net effect size estimates for each outcome measurement instrument using standardized mean differences (SMDs); positive values indicated a beneficial effect of the intervention compared to the control groups. We analyzed the differences between outcome

Assessment of restriction measures implemented during COVID pandemics on community lifestyle choices via wastewater-based epidemiology.

SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected lifestyle habits, and the mental health and wellbeing of people around the world. In this manuscript, two towns (Paulton and Radstock) and two cities (Bath and Bristol) in Southwest England (> 1 million people) were monitored for two years using Wastewater-Based Epidemiology to assess impacts of COVID (including management measures such as lockdowns and movement restrictions) on community lifestyle choices: illicit drugs, legal stimulants, abused pharmaceuticals and pain pharma usage. Results were triangulated with key dates captured during the pandemic (national l

The epidemiology of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni infections in the Egypt-49 project area. 4. Measurement of the incidence of bilharziasis.

The measurement of incidence, or the rate at which people become positive, for Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni was carried out in four parts of the Egypt-49 project area near Alexandria. For S. haematobium, rates as high as 22.8% per year were found for children 0-6 years old in a rural area; in the same area, the incidence of S. mansoni was 8.5% per year. The true incidence is underestimated because many cases become negative spontaneously. This loss rate of S. haematobium cases is 0.476 per year for children 0-4 years old, and 0.049 per year for those aged 5 and 6 years; for S. manson

Epidemiologic approaches to policy research - examinations of single policies, policy clusters, and policy climates: Conceptualization, measurement, and analysis.

Given intensifying political polarization and sweeping legal actions targeting marginalized populations across the U.S., there are increasing calls to examine how these policy changes are shaping population health and health inequities. To meet these calls, researchers have developed and applied various approaches to support rigorous, theoretically-informed quantitative research on policies and health. To date, much of the literature has examined single policies; however, there is growing interest in examining alternative ways of conceptualizing policy exposures, namely as policy clusters or p

A systematic review of sample size estimation accuracy on power in malaria cluster randomised trials measuring epidemiological outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Cluster randomised trials (CRTs) are the gold standard for measuring the community-wide impacts of malaria control tools. CRTs rely on well-defined sample size estimations to detect statistically significant effects of trialled interventions, however these are often predicted poorly by triallists. Here, we review the accuracy of predicted parameters used in sample size calculations for malaria CRTs with epidemiological outcomes. METHODS: We searched for published malaria CRTs using four online databases in March 2022. Eligible trials included those with malaria-specific epidemio

A large outbreak of measles in the West Midlands, England, 2017-2018: descriptive epidemiology, control measures and lessons learnt.

In November 2017, eight confirmed measles cases were reported to Public Health England from a hospital in the West Midlands. A multidisciplinary Incident Management Team (IMT) was established to determine the extent of the problem and coordinate an outbreak response. Between 1 November 2017 and 4 June 2018, a total of 116 confirmed and 21 likely measles cases were linked to this outbreak; just under half (43%) were aged over 15 years of age. Fifty-five of the confirmed cases were hospitalised (48%) and no deaths were reported. At the start of the outbreak, cases were mostly individuals of Roma

COVID-19 social-distancing measures altered the epidemiology of facial injury: a United Kingdom-Australia comparative study.

The purpose of this study was to undertake a retrospective cross-sectional analysis to compare the frequency and characteristics of facial injury presentations at a UK and an Australian tertiary referral hospital during the implementation of COVID-19 social-distancing measures. The primary predictor variables were a heterogeneous set of factors grouped into logical categories: demographics, injury mechanisms and site, and management. The primary outcome variable was the presentation of a hard or soft tissue facial injury. A descriptive statistical analysis was undertaken on the assembled data.
