Mathematical models for dengue fever epidemiology: A 10-year systematic review.

Mathematical models have a long history in epidemiological research, and as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, research on mathematical modeling became imperative and very influential to understand the epidemiological dynamics of disease spreading. Mathematical models describing dengue fever epidemiological dynamics are found back from 1970. Dengue fever is a viral mosquito-borne infection caused by four antigenically related but distinct serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4). With 2.5 billion people at risk of acquiring the infection, it is a major international public health concern. Although most of

A Novel Sampling Model to Study the Epidemiology of Canine Leishmaniasis in an Urban Environment.

Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important parasitic diseases in the world. The domestic dog is the main reservoir of zoonotic VL and a high prevalence of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is associated with transmission of infection to humans. Here we describe the methodology used to obtain a rapid and representative sample of domestic dogs in the city of Posadas, Misiones, and compare the prevalence of Leishmania infection with a sample of shelter dogs. Methodology: We used the city land registry to make a random selection of homes and systematically recruited 349 domesti

Mesothelioma in Italy: the Casale Monferrato model to a national epidemiological surveillance system.

The purpose of the present paper is to review the origin and development of the epidemiology of mesothelioma in Italy, starting with the detection and investigation of the major outbreak of the disease observed in Casale Monferrato, Piedmont Region. Over the last four decades, mortality among the cohort of ex-Eternit workers has been measured at three points in time. More recently, population based case-control studies in the area of Casale Monferrato have provided new light on the dose-response curve of the relationship between asbestos exposure and mesotheliomas. The publication of the first

Implications of recent epidemiologic studies for the linear nonthreshold model and radiation protection.

The recently published NCRP Commentary No. 27 evaluated the new information from epidemiologic studies as to their degree of support for applying the linear nonthreshold (LNT) model of carcinogenic effects for radiation protection purposes (NCRP 2018 Implications of Recent Epidemiologic Studies for the Linear Nonthreshold Model and Radiation Protection, Commentary No. 27 (Bethesda, MD: National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements)). The aim was to determine whether recent epidemiologic studies of low-LET radiation, particularly those at low doses and/or low dose rates (LD/LDR), br

Zika virus: An update on epidemiology, pathology, molecular biology, and animal model.

Zika virus (ZIKV) was first described in 1947, and became a health emergency problem in 2016 when its association with fetal microcephaly cases was confirmed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. To date, ZIKV infection has been documented in 66 countries. ZIKV is recognized as a neurotropic virus and numerous diseases manifested in multiple neurological disorders have been described, mainly in countries that have been exposed to ZIKV after the 2007 outbreak in the Federated States of Micronesia. The most dramatic consequence of ZIKV infection documented is

Modeling the impact of tuberculosis interventions on epidemiologic outcomes and health system costs.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) programs must invest in a variety of TB specific activities in order to reach ambitious global targets. Uncertainty exists surrounding the potential impact of each of these activities. The objective of our study was to model different interventions and quantify their impact on epidemiologic outcomes and costs from the health system perspective. METHODS: Decision analysis was used to define the TB patient trajectory within the health system of three different countries. We considered up to seven different interventions that could affect either the natural history

Prenatal development is linked to bronchial reactivity: epidemiological and animal model evidence.

Chronic cardiorespiratory disease is associated with low birthweight suggesting the importance of the developmental environment. Prenatal factors affecting fetal growth are believed important, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The influence of developmental programming on bronchial hyperreactivity is investigated in an animal model and evidence for comparable associations is sought in humans. Pregnant Wistar rats were fed either control or protein-restricted diets throughout pregnancy. Bronchoconstrictor responses were recorded from offspring bronchial segments. Morphometric analysis

An epidemiological model for West Nile virus: invasion analysis and control applications.

Infectious diseases present ecological and public health challenges that can be addressed with mathematical models. Certain pathogens, however, including the emerging West Nile virus (WN) in North America, exhibit a complex seasonal ecology that is not readily analysed with standard epidemiological methods. We develop a single-season susceptible-infectious-removed (SIR) model of WN cross-infection between birds and mosquitoes, incorporating specific features unique to WN ecology. We obtain the disease reproduction number, R0, and show that mosquito control decreases, but bird control increases

Suicide risk in prostate cancer patients: epidemiological trends and a predictive modeling.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy among men. Although survival rates have steadily improved, some patients still face an increased risk of suicide following diagnosis. Understanding the temporal patterns and key risk factors associated with suicide after a PCa diagnosis is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. However, comprehensive models for individualized suicide risk prediction remain limited. METHODS: This study utilized data from the SEER database covering the period from 2010 to 2021. First, the suicide mortality trend among PCa patients was as

Applications of causal and structural equation modeling in epidemiology: a systematic and critical review.

BACKGROUND: Structural equation modeling (SEM) and causal modeling (CM) are powerful statistical approaches for identifying complex interrelationships among variables. However, their application in epidemiology remains limited and under-documented, especially in infectious disease research, which requires integrated analytical frameworks for effective control. METHODS: To examine how SEM and CM have been applied, their methodological characteristics, and reporting practices, a systematic and critical review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The search covered studies published betwee

Analysis of a fractional order epidemiological model for tuberculosis transmission with vaccination and reinfection.

This study has been carried out using a novel mathematical model on the dynamics of tuberculosis (TB) transmission considering vaccination, endogenous re-activation of the dormant infection, and exogenous re-infection. We can comprehend the behavior of TB under the influence of vaccination from this article. We compute the basic reproduction number ( R 0 ) as well as the vaccination reproduction number ( R v ) using the next-generation matrix (NGM) approach. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that the disease-free equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable, and the fractional orde

Immuno-epidemiological co-affection model of HIV infection and opioid addiction.

In this paper, we present a multi-scale co-affection model of HIV infection and opioid addiction. The population scale epidemiological model is linked to the within-host model which describes the HIV and opioid dynamics in a co-affected individual. CD4 cells and viral load data obtained from morphine addicted SIV-infected monkeys are used to validate the within-host model. AIDS diagnoses, HIV death and opioid mortality data are used to fit the between-host model. When the rates of viral clearance and morphine uptake are fixed, the within-host model is structurally identifiable. If in addition

Impact of diabetes mellitus on tuberculosis epidemiology in Indonesia: A mathematical modeling analysis.

We investigated and forecasted the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology in Indonesia between 2020 and 2050. A recently-developed age-structured TB-DM dynamic mathematical model was utilized to assess the impact of DM on TB epidemiology. Model parameters were informed by systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses were conducted to assess robustness of predictions. The proportion of TB incident cases attributed to DM increased from 18.8% (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 12.6%-24.3%) in 2020, to 20.9% (95% UI: 14.7%-27.1%) in 2030, and

An Epidemiological Model of the Effects of Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets on Malaria Transmission.

Insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) have become a central tool for malaria control because they provide personal and community-wide protection through their repellent and insecticidal properties. Here we propose a model that allows to assess the relative importance of those two effects in different epidemiological contexts and we show that these two levels of protection may oppose each other. On the one hand, repellency offers personal protection to the users of ITNs. The repellent action, however, is a two-edged sword, for it diverts infectious mosquitoes to non-users, thereby increasing thei

An epidemiologic risk prediction model for ovarian cancer in Europe: the EPIC study.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer has a high case-fatality ratio, largely due to late diagnosis. Epidemiologic risk prediction models could help identify women at increased risk who may benefit from targeted prevention measures, such as screening or chemopreventive agents. METHODS: We built an ovarian cancer risk prediction model with epidemiologic risk factors from 202,206 women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study. RESULTS: Older age at menopause, longer duration of hormone replacement therapy, and higher body mass index were included as increasing ovarian can
