PURPOSE: Epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation in diabetic retinal disease is frequently associated with inflammation and fibrosis; however, the underlying cellular mechanisms remain incompletely defined. We investigated whether macrophage-associated profibrotic programs contribute to diabetic ERM formation and whether these pathways are modulated by faricimab, a dual angiopoietin-2 (Ang2) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) inhibitor.
METHODS: Human ERM specimens obtained during vitrectomy were analyzed by immunohistochemistry to assess macrophage infiltration, including Tie2-expr

Secondary epiretinal membranes (ERMs) can develop from various causes, including those associated with glaucoma treatments such as trabeculectomy (TLE) and EX-PRESS (EXP) insertion surgery. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of new ERMs and changes in preexisting ERMs following TLE or EXP insertion. Between April 2018 and March 2019, 102 and 74 eyes that underwent primary and standalone TLE and EXP insertion, respectively, were evaluated. Of these, 48 eyes were included in the TLE group and 32 eyes were included in the EXP group. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to asses

BACKGROUND: By using dyes, it is easier to identify the extent of an epiretinal membrane (ERM) or the inner limiting membrane (ILM) during surgery. Trypan blue (TB) stains ERM and ILM weakly, but with less apparent toxicity than other intraocular dyes. Its main drawback in vitreoretinal surgery is the requirement of an air-fluid exchange (AFX) before its use.
AIM: To propose a modified form of TB denser than water, thus obviating the need for an AFX.
DESIGN: A prospective, consecutive trial with heavy trypan blue in vitreoretinal surgery.
METHODS: A consecutive group of patients with ERMs w

A 15-year-old boy presented himself to the retina clinic with a six-year history of poor vision in both eyes. Ocular symptoms started with deterioration in the vision of both eyes associated with ocular pain. There was no history of antecedent trauma, headaches, seizures, or loss of consciousness. The general and systemic examinations were normal. On ocular examination, the corrected visual acuity was 6/24 and 6/6 in the right and left eyes, respectively. The anterior segment examination was normal except for a relative afferent pupillary defect in the right eye. Examination of the posterior s

OBJECTIVE: Formation of epiretinal membranes (ERMs) in the posterior fundus results in progressive deterioration of vision. ERMs have been associated with numerous clinical conditions, including proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), but its pathogenic mechanisms are still unknown. This study was conducted to determine whether neurotrophic factor receptors (tyrosine kinase receptors trkA, trkB, and trkC; low-affinity neurotrophin [NT] receptor p75 [p75(NTR)]; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor receptor-alpha1 [GFR alpha 1] and GFR alpha 2; and Ret) are involved in the formation of

The epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a fibrocellular layer that forms on the inner surface of the retina, often leading to visual impairment and significantly impacting visual function. Understanding the pathophysiology of ERM formation is crucial for advancing ophthalmic care and improving patient outcomes. This research aims to investigate the pathophysiology of ERM by comparing the internal limiting membrane (ILM) pathology in patients with and without ERM. The study involves a comprehensive protocol of ILM and ERM specimens collection during pars plana vitrectomy and membrane peeling procedure

Epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a pathological condition characterized by the formation of a non-vascularized fibrocellular membrane on the inner retinal surface, leading to retinal traction, macular edema, and visual impairment. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is the primary imaging modality for diagnosing macular ERM, enabling high-resolution visualization of retinal morphology and thickness. Although the transition from Time-Domain (TD-OCT) to Spectral-Domain OCT (SD-OCT) has significantly improved clinical imaging, the latest advancement-Swept-Source OCT (SS-OCT)-remains limited in clinica
