Acalculous Cholecystitis in a Pediatric Patient With Plasmodium Falciparum Infection: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Malaria has been associated with acute acalculous cholecystitis, a very uncommon complication in children. We present a 5-year-old girl, originally from Equatorial-Guinea, diagnosed with severe malaria with acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia and acute acalculous cholecystitis. She was treated with intravenous quinine and clindamycin, plus cefotaxime and metronidazole with a full resolution without surgery.

[Marburg virus disease in travellers].

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a dreadful but exceptional disease. Formerly mainly identified in Uganda, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has recently appeared in the Republic of Guinea, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania, adding West Africa to the affected regions. Humans become infected through exposure to bats Roussettus aegyptiacus or during unprotected care of infected people. Five cases are linked to travellers, the last one dates to 2008 and involved a visit to caves colonized by bats. At present, there is no specific treatment or vaccine. Despite its rarity, adventuro

Colonic polyposis due to Schistosoma intercalatum.

Schistosomiasis polyps induced by Schistosoma mansoni and S. japonicum have been reported from pathological observations but this is not the case for colonic schistosomiasis infection by S. intercalatum which has always been associated with mild clinical presentations. We report the case of a 17-year-old man, native from Equatorial Guinea, with colonic polyposis associated with infection by S. intercalatum.

[Three cases of imported histoplasmosis in our hospital].

Since 1999 we have observed three cases of imported histoplasmosis in our hospital. One was an immunocompetent individual and two further patients were immunosuppressed (renal transplantation and HIV infection C3). Two patients were born in endemic areas (Equatorial Guinea and Ecuador) and a third patient had a history of previous travel to the Peruvian Amazonia. The different clinical presentations and diagnostic tools of histoplasmosis are discussed.

Rescue and characterization of the first West African Marburg virus 2021 from Guinea.

Marburg virus (MARV) is a causative agent of a severe hemorrhagic fever with high fatality rates endemic in central Africa. Current outbreaks of MARV in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania underline the relevance of MARV as a public health emergency pathogen. In 2021, the first known human MARV case was confirmed in Guinea, West Africa. Since no infectious virus could be isolated from that fatal case in 2021, we generated recombinant (rec) MARV Guinea by reverse genetics in order to study and characterize this new MARV, which occurred in West Africa for the first time, in terms of its growth proper

Ascariasis and trichuriasis in Cameroon.

A national survey of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichuria was carried out in Cameroon on more than 22,000 children from a random sample of 512 schools. Prevalence rates of both A. lumbricoides and T. trichuria infection were very low in the tropical zone (below 5%). They increased markedly in the equatorial zone, Guinea-type climate, to 60-85% for A. lumbricoides and 85-95% for T. trichuria. In the equatorial zone with Cameroon-type climate, prevalences were slightly lower: 50-70% for A. lumbricoides and 70-90% for T. trichuria infections. Environmental conditions are the main factors

Importation of seven cases of an unusual helminthic infection into Singapore and assessment of the risk of local transmission.

Singapore remains vulnerable to the introduction of infectious diseases from other countries due to the high traffic of migrant labour and other visitors. We describe seven cases of migrant workers from West Africa who entered Singapore carrying loaisis, a helminthic infection. The clinical presentation, treatment using single dose ivermectin, potential for transmission, and the need for screening of this infection in Singapore are discussed.

[Ocular loiasis in a patient with chronic hypereosinophilia].

CASE REPORT: We present a case of ocular loiasis with a subconjunctival filaria, 5.5cm long, and a severe microfilaremia, 1 microfilaria/ml, on a previously asymptomatic woman from Equatorial Guinea, with a past medical history of hypereosinophilia of unknown origin. DISCUSSION: Ocular loiasis is an imported infestation with a very low rate in our country. Nevertheless, chronic infestation in immigrants coming from endemic areas of Africa may increase the rate of this disease in our country.

Reconsidering indoor residual spraying coverage targets: A retrospective analysis of high-resolution programmatic malaria control data.

Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one of the core vector control interventions available to malaria control programs. Normative and scientific guidance has long held that very high IRS coverage (at least 80 to 85% houses sprayed) is necessary to provide community protection, but there is little evidence backing these recommendations, in large part due to the operational and ethical concerns that conducting appropriate trials of differing IRS coverage levels would raise. The present study leverages data from four years of targeted IRS implementation on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, to estima

Identifying individual, household and environmental risk factors for malaria infection on Bioko Island to inform interventions.

BACKGROUND: Since 2004, malaria transmission on Bioko Island has declined significantly as a result of the scaling-up of control interventions. The aim of eliminating malaria from the Island remains elusive, however, underscoring the need to adapt control to the local context. Understanding the factors driving the risk of malaria infection is critical to inform optimal suits of interventions in this adaptive approach. METHODS: This study used individual and household-level data from the 2015 and 2018 annual malaria indicator surveys on Bioko Island, as well as remotely-sensed environmental da

[Cutaneous filariasis Loa Loa: 26 moroccan cases of importation].

INTRODUCTION: Loa Loa filariasis or loiasis is a subcutaneous and bloody vectorial parasitosis. It is endemic in forest and swamp areas of west and central Africa. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed 26 moroccan cases of importation. All patients had visited Equatorial Guinea. Transient and migratory edema with pruritus were described in all cases and seen in 5 cases. A history of eyeworm was reported in 13 patients and subcutaneous migration of adult Loa Loa in 19 patients. Other features including fever and asthenia were reported in 11 patients. Microfilaremia was positive in 8 patients and e

[Histoplasmosis 45 years after infection in an immunocompetent man].

We report a case of a lung reactivation of a latent histoplasmosis in a 68-year-old patient without immunologic dysfunction living in Barcelona (Spain). The Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum infection was probably acquired in a previous stay in Equatorial Guinea 45 years before. Diagnosis of mild chronic pulmonary histoplasmosis was performed by histopathology of lung biopsy plus antibodies detection against H. capsulatum. Treatment with oral itraconazol during three months leaded to a complete clinical cure, and antibodies disappeared after four years of follow up.

A case of Plasmodium falciparum malaria presenting 13 years after leaving an endemic area.

Plasmodium falciparum usually causes an acute malaria infection, with symptoms presenting from 8 to 11 days onwards following inoculation by an infected mosquito. However, evidence suggesting chronic carriage of blood-stage infection, which can lead to recrudescence of parasitaemia as immunity wanes, has been documented in migrants from malaria-endemic to non-endemic regions. We report the case of a pregnant patient who presented in late 2020 with symptomatic P. falciparum malaria, having lived continuously in areas non-endemic for malaria (Spain and the UK) for 13 years. The patient was origi

Paragonimus and paragonimiasis in West and Central Africa: unresolved questions.

Paragonimiasis, human lung fluke disease, is a foodborne anthropozoonosis caused by the trematodes assigned to Paragonimus and is regarded by the World Health Organization as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD). The life cycle of this medically important parasite centres on a complex freshwater biological community that includes two intermediate hosts: a mollusc and a decapod, usually a brachyuran. Although there is a perception that the biology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of Paragonimus is well understood, in reality, this is not the case, especially in Africa. Much remains unknown conc

Confirmation of the absence of local transmission and geographic assignment of imported falciparum malaria cases to China using microsatellite panel.

BACKGROUND: Current methods to classify local and imported malaria infections depend primarily on patient travel history, which can have limited accuracy. Genotyping has been investigated as a complementary approach to track the spread of malaria and identify the origin of imported infections. METHODS: An extended panel of 26 microsatellites (16 new microsatellites) for Plasmodium falciparum was evaluated in 602 imported infections from 26 sub-Saharan African countries to the Jiangsu Province of People's Republic of China. The potential of the 26 microsatellite markers to assign imported para

Role of Wasp and the small GTPases RhoA, RhoB, and Cdc42 during capacitation and acrosome reaction in spermatozoa of English guinea pigs.

Cytoskeleton remodeling is necessary for capacitation and the acrosome reaction in spermatozoa. F-actin is located in the acrosome and equatorial region during capacitation, but is relocated in the post-acrosomal region during the acrosome reaction in spermatozoa from bull, rat, mice, and guinea pig. Actin polymerization and relocalization are generally regulated by small GTPases that activate Wasp protein, which coordinates with Arp2/3, profilin I, and profilin II to complete cytoskeletal remodeling. This sequence of events is not completely described in spermatozoa, though. Therefore, the ai

A transpupillary approach for crosslinking Guinea pig sclera using WST11 and near-infrared light.

Crosslinking strengthens the sclera and holds potential as a treatment for myopia. This study aims to identify optimal crosslinking parameters in guinea pigs using WST11 with dextran followed by near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Guinea pig eyes were incubated in WST11 with 2, 5 or 10% dextran, and penetration depth was assessed by fluorescence microscopy. Crosslinking efficacy was measured as thermal stability using a thermal degradation assay, following incubation in WST11 + 10% dextran (WST-D) for 30 min and NIR irradiation at 10 mW/cm2 or 20 mW/cm2 for 10, 20 and 30 min. Leishmaniasis in Cameroon and neighboring countries: An overview of current status and control challenges.

Leishmaniasis causes the ninth largest disease burden among infectious diseases but remains a very neglected tropical disease. Although the disease is endemic in Cameroon and some neighboring countries, data on its epidemiology are very scanty. The present review summarizes the available information on leishmaniasis in the central region of Africa. According to available records, Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria have been identified as endemic foci of both cutaneous (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In addition, the phlebotomine vectors of leishmaniasis have been reported in these three countrie
