Large volcanic aerosol load in the stratosphere linked to Asian monsoon transport.

The Nabro stratovolcano in Eritrea, northeastern Africa, erupted on 13 June 2011, injecting approximately 1.3 teragrams of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) to altitudes of 9 to 14 kilometers in the upper troposphere, which resulted in a large aerosol enhancement in the stratosphere. The SO(2) was lofted into the lower stratosphere by deep convection and the circulation associated with the Asian summer monsoon while gradually converting to sulfate aerosol. This demonstrates that to affect climate, volcanic eruptions need not be strong enough to inject sulfur directly to the stratosphere.

Praziquantel and risk of visual disorders: Case series assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Praziquantel has been in use by helminthiasis and schistosomiasis control programs for about 30 years. Although deemed to be safe with regard to its adverse drug reaction profile in reference to the product information of Biltricide, the Eritrean Pharmacovigilance Center received reports of visual abnormalities related to the drug. This is a case series assessment of unusual cases of visual abnormalities associated with praziquantel. METHODS: Search was made in VigiBase by setting praziquantel as a drug substance, Eritrea as the reporting country and all eye disorders, high leve

The burden of malaria in East Africa: prevalence, risk factors, and control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to exert a severe toll on public health in East Africa, accounting for a large share of global morbidity and mortality. Despite national strategies and donor-funded efforts, the disease persists due to complex, intersecting biological, environmental, and socioeconomic drivers. This review aims to analyse malaria burden, identify risk factors, and assess the effectiveness of control strategies across twelve East African countries to inform tailored and evidence-based interventions. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using peer-reviewed literature, national

[Identification of geophilic and zoophilic dermatophytes in siblings with tinea capitis. A pathogenic factor or contamination?].

Two siblings of African origin presented with multiple scaling patches and alopecia on the scalp four weeks after returning from a vacation in Eritrea. Direct KOH examination revealed fungal elements; Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton terrestre were identified in the fungal culture. We discuss the putative pathogenic role of both microorganisms in causing disease. Although infection with Microsporum canis currently accounts for almost fifty percent of all cases of tinea capitis in Germany, other fungi have gained importance due to tourism and increasing migration.

A 27-Year-Old Man With Intermittent Chest Pain During the Last 4 Years.

A 27-year-old man from Eritrea presented to the ED complaining about a progressively worse blunt chest pain in the anterior right hemithorax. Chest pain started 4 years ago and was intermittent. During the last 6 months, symptoms got worse, and the patient experienced shortness of breath in mild exercise. For this purpose, he visited another institution, where a chest radiograph was performed (Fig 1). He was advised to visit a pulmonologist for further evaluation, with the diagnosis of a loculated pleural effusion in the right upper hemithorax.

Infibulated women have an increased risk of anal sphincter tears at delivery: a population-based Swedish register study of 250 000 births.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk for anal sphincter tears (AST) in infibulated women. DESIGN: Population-based cohort study. SETTING: Nationwide study in Sweden. POPULATION: The study population included 250 491 primiparous women with a vaginal singleton birth at 37-41 completed gestational weeks during 1999-2008. We only included women born in Sweden and in Africa. The African women were categorized into three groups; a Somalia group, n = 929, where over 95% are infibulated; the Eritrea-Ethiopia-Sudan group, n = 955, where the majority are infibulated, compared with other African countri

Knowledge, attitudes and sexual practices regarding HIV/AIDS among the Eritrean military.

OBJECTIVE: Eritrea is a small-country situated in the Horn of Africa with an HIV prevalence of 2.4% among pregnant women in 2005. Approximately 200,000 young, productive members of the population of 5.5 million are mobilised in the army through National Service conscription. Most members of the military are young, sexually active people, a category inclined towards high-risk sexual behaviour putting them at risk of sexually transmitted and HIV infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using a random sample of 836 members of a representative category of the Eritrean army was conducted, utili

Madurella mycetomatis infection of the buttock in an Eritrean refugee in Switzerland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a neglected infectious disease caused by a fungus (eumycetoma) or bacteria (actinomycetoma); it is characterized by chronic local inflammation with sinus formation and purulent discharge. Its course can be quite devastating because of the difficulty in diagnosing the infection and in eliminating the causative agent. Although endemic in many countries in the tropics and subtropics, the migration of Africans to Europe may increase the presence of this neglected disease in European countries. We present a case of an Eritrean patient living in a non-endemic country who was

Brain tuberculosis-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome in an HIV-positive patient: a biopsy-proven case.

The case of an HIV-infected man from Eritrea previously diagnosed with tuberculosis, who presented neurological impairment and cerebral lesion after having voluntarily stopped anti-tubercular and antiretroviral therapies, is here reported. Treatments associated with steroids and mannitol were administered. The patient's condition improved, but neuroimaging showed a continuous worsening of the lesion, while a great immunological reconstitution was observed. Brain microsurgery was performed. A tuberculosis diagnosis was supported by pathological and microbiological examinations. Tuberculosis ari

Uvulectomy to prevent throat infections.

It is common practice in many parts of Africa for traditional healers to remove the uvula to prevent infections and other disorders associated with the throat. We report two cases of children presenting with recurrent tonsillitis. On examination both children showed complete absence of the uvula and prominent tonsils. It was later revealed that they both had undergone uvulectomy, performed by traditional healers in Eritrea. We report this because this practice, although commonly performed, is little known to otolaryngologists practising outside Africa. In addition, although velopharyngeal comp

A Novel Mutation in the Thyroglobulin Gene Resulting in Neonatal Goiter and Congenital Hypothyroidism in an Eritrean Infant.

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) due to dyshormonogenesis may occur due to mutations in any of the key genes involved in thyroid hormone biosynthesis (TG, TPO, DUOX2, DUOXA2, SLC5A5, IYD, SLC26A4 and SLC26A7). Mutations in the thyroglobulin gene (TG) are frequently associated with goiter, which may present fetally or neonatally, although a spectrum of phenotypes is reported. We present the case of a woman of Eritrean origin who presented in the third trimester of pregnancy in the early stages of labor. Ultrasound at presentation revealed a fetal neck swelling consistent with a goiter. Following

[Splenomegaly in an Eritrean refugee: the hyper-reactive malaria splenomegaly syndrome.].

BACKGROUND: Hyper-reactive malaria splenomegaly (HMS) is a rare and potentially severe complication of malaria. It is likely that the incidence of patients with HMS will rise in the Netherlands due to the recent increase in asylum-seekers from Sub-Saharan Africa. It can be difficult to diagnose this disease, as this case shows. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 31-year-old male from Eritrea was admitted with fever and dyspnea, caused by an influenza A-infection. The patient also presented with cachexia, pronounced hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia. Microscopic diagnostic analysis for malaria was negative

Immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, hepatitis A and hepatitis B among adult asylum seekers in the Netherlands, 2016.

Asylum seekers are a vulnerable population for contracting infectious diseases. Outbreaks occur among children and adults. In the Netherlands, asylum seeker children are offered vaccination according to the National Immunization Program. Little is known about protection against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) in adult asylum seekers. In this 2016 study, we assessed the immunity of adult asylum seekers against nine VPD to identify groups that might benefit from additional vaccinations. We invited asylum seekers from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Ethiopia to participate in a ser

Mapping the prevalence of molecular markers of Plasmodium falciparum artemisinin partial resistance in Africa: a spatial-temporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum kelch13 (k13) mutations in Africa signal emerging artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R), endangering malaria control by undermining artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). Sparse surveillance obscures whether rising k13 ART-R prevalence reflects local emergence or geographic expansion. We aimed to model and infer high-resolution spatial-temporal prevalence of k13 ART-R and ACT partner-drug markers to inform public health policy. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review (PROSPERO-ID CRD42024593923) spanning the years 2014-2025, complementi

[A Young Asylum Seeker with Hemoptysis and Positive Tuberculosis Screening: Not Always Tuberculosis!].

This paper reports on the case of a 19 year old asylum seeker from Eritrea who presented with hemoptysis, a positive tuberculosis screening (Enzyme Linked Immuno Spot Assay - EliSpot) and mushy faeces submitted with a suspected diagnosis of tuberculosis. Laboratory testing revealed thrombopenia, leukopenia and eosinophilia, while the chest X-ray was inconspicuous. Acid-proof rod bacteria were neither evident in bronchoscopy samples nor in expectorated sputum samples. However, sonographic findings showed a profound splenomegaly, and laboratory testing revealed a Schistosoma mansoni infection. T

Goitre in Ethiopia.

A stratified goitre survey was conducted on 35,635 schoolchildren and 19,158 household members in all Regions of Ethiopia except Eritrea and Tigrai. The gross goitre prevalence (mean of male and female values) among schoolchildren and household members was 30.6 and 18.7% respectively, while that of visible goitre was 1.6 and 3.2% respectively. Prevalence was higher in females (27.3% in household members and 36.1% in schoolchildren) than in males (10.1% in household members and 25.1% in schoolchildren) and increased with age more in females than in males. The prevalence rates at higher altitude

Duodenal ulcers preceding cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis.

Lymphadenitis is the most common presentation of extra pulmonary tuberculosis, whereas gastrointestinal localization, particularly duodenal involvement, is rare. We report a case of extra pulmonary tuberculosis with association between cervical lymphadenitis and duodenitis with multiple ulcers, not responsive to treatment with protonic pump inhibitors, in a human immunodeficiency virus-seronegative adult woman of Eritrean origin. Clinical patterns of duodenal TB, diagnostic difficulties and aetiopathogenesis are discussed according to the literature. In this case report it is suggested that tu

The existence of Dracunculus medinensis (Linnaeus, 1758) in Turkana, Kenya.

Dracontiasis has been previously reported in southern Sudan, northern Uganda and north-west Eritrea but this is the first report of autochthonous cases in Turkana, Kenya. Five Turkana tribesmen, three females from the same family, one young boy and an adult male were being treated for guinea-worm at the dispensary in Lokichogio, northern Turkana District. The three women had recently returned from southern Sudan, where the disease is endemic, but the two male tribesmen had only lived in and around the Lokichogio region. The methods used in obtaining water from water-holes dug in dry river beds
