Clinical implant dentistry and related research2019eng
BACKGROUND: A 1-2 mm thick labial plate is generally advocated in immediate implant placement and provisionalization (IIPP). However, most of the human labial plates fail to meet this requirement.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effect of labial plate thickness on hard tissue, soft tissue, and esthetic outcomes in IIPP.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 40 patients received IIPP of 50 single-crown implants in the anterior maxilla. Patients were categorized into three groups according to their presurgical thickness of labial bone: 0-0.5, 0.5-1, and ≥ 1 mm.

Placing immediate implants in the esthetic zone poses significant challenges. Implants should be placed with consideration to hard and soft tissues to optimize long-term implant and cosmetic success. In this case report, two maxillary central incisors were extracted at two different time points 5 years apart due to horizontal root fractures. Implants were placed according to immediate single-tooth guidelines using two different surgical and loading approaches, as risk assessment factors changed in the time between the first implant placement (right central incisor) and second implant placement

Homeostasis in the human body results from the tight regulation of several events, since too little inflammation disrupts the process of tissue repair and remodeling, whereas too much exerts a collateral effect by causing tissue damage with life-threatening consequences. In some clinical conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), inflammation functions as a double-edged sword by either enabling or inhibiting cancer development and progression. Generally, cancer develops through evasion mechanisms that regulate cell growth, causing a high rate of uncontrolled proliferation, and mecha

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusion is routinely observed in orthodontics. Its treatment usually revolves around the growth modification or the extractions of the teeth. Identifying treatment that leads to the greatest improvement can aid clinicians in providing the desired smile esthetics.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare smile esthetics between treatment groups by measuring various smile variables and the esthetic perceptions of 3 panels of raters.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 66 patients equally divided into the functional appliance (FA) and

INTRODUCTION:: The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of smile esthetics among orthodontists and layperson, with respect to different maxillary central incisors vertical positions in full-face and close-up smile analyses.
METHODS:: Frontal photographs of the smiles of two adult women were used. Images were altered to create a symmetrical image with the gingival margin levels of the maxillary canines matching the central incisors and a 1.0-mm central-to-lateral incisal step. Later, the images were altered in order to create six different central incisor vertical positions in

This case report illustrates the successful treatment of a patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion and an unesthetic smile involving excessive gingival display and large buccal corridors. By applying dual buccal interradicular miniscrews, total intrusion of the maxillary dentition along with distalization was induced to improve both the occlusion and smile esthetics. In addition to the conventional cephalometric superimposition, three-dimensional superimposition was performed and evaluated to validate the treatment outcome.

The success of all-ceramic crowns and increased patient demand for metal-free, tooth-colored restorations has led to the development of many different restorative systems for all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). The most recent core materials for all-ceramic FDPs are the yttrium-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP)-based materials. Yttrium oxide is a stabilizing oxide added to pure zirconia to stabilize it at room temperature and to generate a multiphase material known as partially stabilized zirconia. This exhibits very high flexural strength and fracture toughness along with good b

INTRODUCTION: When planning esthetic dental treatments, understanding smile preferences is important for dental professionals. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of selected smile characteristics on the attractiveness of young Saudis as assessed by Saudi laypersons and explore gender-preferred changes in smile attractiveness.
METHODOLOGY: This observational study assessed the dynamic smile attractiveness of 168 Saudi individuals (84 males and 84 females), selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Dynamic smiles were elicited by viewing comedic content and captured with a cam

OBJECTIVES: The study explored whether television commercials change the perception of one's own dentofacial attractiveness and to identify if it is influenced by personality traits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 83 participants, aged 19-27 years. The experimental group (N=42) watched commercials portraying famous young individuals with high smile esthetics, bright teeth and no visible malocclusions, while the control group (N=41) watched neutral commercials (without people or visible teeth). The perception of subjects` own orofacial esthetics and its psychosocial effects were as

Transposition is a dental anomaly manifested by a positional interchange of two permanent teeth. The maxillary permanent canine usually transposes with the first premolar and occasionally with the lateral incisor. These are mainly genetically governed and are treated orthodontically if complete segment of tooth is present; in case of missing teeth, participation of cosmetic dentist is must. The present case report describes a situation where left canine to lateral incisor complete transposition was present along with a missing left central incisor. Esthetic rehabilitation of the "smile zone" w

INTRODUCTION: Headgears have been used to treat Class II malocclusions for over a century. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the profile esthetic changes resulting from headgear use in growing Class II patients with protrusive, normal, and retrusive maxillae.
METHODS: Profile silhouettes were created from pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric tracings of growing Class II patients treated with headgear followed by conventional fixed appliances. Ten patients had an initially protrusive maxilla (FH:NA, >92°), 10 had an initially normally positioned maxilla

OBJECTIVES: The Pink Esthetic Score (PES) is widely used to assess peri-implant soft-tissue esthetics around single-tooth implant restorations; however, frontal-view assessment may incompletely capture three-dimensional peri-implant features such as buccolingual contour, emergence profile, and mucosal scarring. This study introduced the Extended Pink Esthetic Score (E-PES), a multidirectional assessment framework incorporating frontal, profile, and occlusal views.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty single-tooth implant restorations in the maxillary esthetic zone were evaluated using standardized p

Fixed implant-supported prosthesis for the edentulous maxilla has gained tremendous popularity over the years. Multiple prosthetic designs have been introduced in order to accommodate a gamut of clinical situations. Irrespective of the design, it is paramount that the esthetics imparted by the prosthesis be uncompromised. Though esthetics is subjective, a common ground exists where all its fundamental principles converge. This article reviews pertinent dental and facial esthetics literature for application of various esthetic concepts involved in diagnosis and treatment planning for an implant

BACKGROUND: Generally, esthetic outcomes following root-coverage procedures are not assessed. This article proposes a score for evaluating the esthetic outcome following root-coverage surgery.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with Miller Class I and II recession defects treated with root-coverage procedures were evaluated. Esthetic outcomes were assessed using the root coverage esthetic score (RES) 6 months after surgery. This score evaluates five variables: level of the gingival margin, marginal tissue contour, soft tissue texture, mucogingival junction alignment, and gingival color. Because com
