As part of a project to examine health care ethics consultation in Canada, we surveyed individuals who were considered by themselves or others to play a significant role in health care ethics consultation. Since one goal of the project was to examine the education and abilities necessary for consultants, we sought to determine the qualifications and skills currently possessed by persons considered to be ethics consultants. For the purposes of the questionnaire, 'health care ethics consultation' was defined broadly to include consultation on ethical issues in clinical care or in clinical resear

The emerging new multidisciplinary and crosscultural field of bioethics will require sensitive, open-minded professionals to take the lead in hospital ethics, in genetic counselling, and in the teaching of bioethics to students in nursing, medicine and the basic sciences. Nurses with ward experience who return to university to gain an MA or PhD in bioethics are eminently suited for this leadership role, for they may be more likely than physicians to study for a liberal education to supplement their professional knowledge; their first-hand experience in nursing is an antidote to the pointless s

Over the past decade, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) has been adopted into routine obstetric care to screen for fetal sex, trisomies 21, 18 and 13, sex chromosome aneuploidies and fetal sex determination. It is predicted that the scope of NIPT will be expanded in the future, including screening for adult-onset conditions (AOCs). Some ethicists have proposed that using NIPT to detect severe autosomal AOCs that cannot be prevented or treated, such as Huntington's disease, should only be offered to prospective parents who intend to terminate a pregnancy in the case of a positive result. We

Epistemic injustice has undergone a steady growth in the medical ethics literature throughout the last decade as many ethicists have found it to be a powerful tool for describing and assessing morally problematic situations in healthcare. However, surprisingly scarce attention has been devoted to how epistemic injustice relates to physicians' professional duties on a conceptual level. I argue that epistemic injustice, specifically testimonial, collides with physicians' duty of nonmaleficence and should thus be actively fought against in healthcare encounters on the ground of professional condu

INTRODUCTION: In Guinea, serological tests have shown the absence of antibodies in people declared cured of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), thus refuting their previous diagnosis; and the presence of antibodies in contact cases who had not been diagnosed. These findings have led to reflections on the implications of telling those affected.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: The objectives of this study are to identify the stakes of announcing these results in the Guinean health context. 24 people, cured of Ebola or with expertise in ethics or health, were interviewed between November 2019 and February 2020 in C

Uterus transplantation is a new experimental treatment method of absolute uterine factor infertility which affects 3-5% of infertile women. Absolute uterine factor infertility includes infertile women with agenesis or severe malformation of the uterus, several acquired uterine diseases causing infertility, and patients of fertile age after hysterectomy because of various causes. Uterus transplantation is considered a new method of assisted reproduction which allows women with absolute uterine factor infertility to have own biological offspring. However, uterus transplantation is considered a r

Ethical deliberations are unfolding for potentially controversial organoid-entities such as brain organoids and embryoids. Much of the ethical deliberation centers on the questionable moral status of such organoid-entities. However, while such work is important and appropriate, ethical deliberations may become too exclusively rooted in moral status and potentially overshadow other relevant moral dilemmas. The ethical discussion on organoid models can benefit from insights brought forth by both Judith Jarvis Thomson and Don Marquis in how they attempted to advance the abortion debate. To discus

The current COVID-19 pandemic has raised many questions and dilemmas for modern day ethicists and healthcare providers. Are physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers morally obligated to put themselves in harm's way and treat patients during a pandemic, occurring a great risk to themselves, their families and potentially to other patients? The issue was relevant during the 1918 influenza epidemic and more recently severe acute respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2003. Since the risk to the healthcare workers was great, there was tension between the ethical duty and responsibility to treat a

UNLABELLED: A reductive reading of Humanae vitae seeks to limit its appeal to a ban on contraception. In truth, however, it offers a vision of human sexuality and conjugal love with broad and enduring relevance. In setting forth the intrinsic complementarity and irreducibility of the unitive and procreative dimensions of the conjugal act, Paul VI has given us a hermeneutical key for assessing many contemporary ethical dilemmas in human reproductive medicine. From this perspective, this article seeks to apply the logic of Humanae vitae to several real-life scenarios confronted by medical practi

The doctrine of double effect (DDE) is a principle of crucial importance in law and medicine. In medicine, the principle is generally accepted to apply in cases where the treatment necessary to relieve pain and physical suffering runs the risk of hastening the patient's death. More controversially, it has also been used as a justification for withdrawal of treatment from living individuals and physician-assisted suicide. In this paper, I will critique the findings of the controversial Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) hearing Syme vs the Medical Board of Australia In that hear

BACKGROUND Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative late onset disorder. This review of reproductive options aims to increase reproductive confidence and to prevent suffering in relation to family planning around HD and possibly other late onset neurodegenerative disorders. METHODS Selected relevant literature and own views and experiences as clinical geneticists, psychologists and ethicists have been used. RESULTS Possible options, with emphasis on prenatal diagnosis (PD) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to prevent the transmission of HD to the next gene

Background: The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), into healthcare offers substantial efficiency but introduces critical ethical and legal challenges, particularly the perpetuation of systemic bias against older adults ("Digital Ageism"). While technological advances may improve care, they can violate fundamental bioethical principles when models are trained on unrepresentative data. Aim: This article argues that traditional clinical risk-management models are structurally insufficient to address opaque algorithmic bias and

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is progressively influencing clinical reasoning in infectious diseases, particularly in the management of septic shock where timely empirical antimicrobial therapy is crucial. In this perspective, we discuss how AI and ML approaches intersect with established clinical decision-making processes through two examples from our research and practice: prediction of bloodstream infection by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and prediction of candidemia. Traditionally, risk estimation has relied on interpretable models such

AbstractIn this article we focus on Nancy Neveloff Dubler's role on the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law as means to illustrate her public policy contributions as a bioethicist. We review the historical origins of the Task Force, its impact on and contributions to bioethics, and the law. We then make metaobservations about Dubler's commitment to social justice as a governing principle in her deliberative stance on the Task Force. To that end, we specifically highlight Dubler's contributions to the Task Force regarding the extension of the Family Health Care Decisions Act, New York

Large language model (LLM)-based artificial intelligence is increasingly used in ethically consequential human decision-making, yet fully autonomous machine ethics remains unrealistic, motivating architectures that support rather than replace human ethical judgment. This study introduces the Cognitive-Reflective Equilibration Architecture (CREA), a cognitively grounded artificial moral advisor that operationalizes the Cognitive-Reflective Equilibration Model (CREM), in which reflective reasoning guides ethical judgment from intuitive cognition toward a more advanced equilibrium among competing

OBJECTIVE: Individual patients' data sharing requires interoperability, security, ethical, and legal compliance. The aim was to assess the landscape and sharing capacities between endocrine researchers.
DESIGN: A standardized survey (SurveyMonkey®) with 67 questions was sent to European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors centers.
METHODS: Answers were counted as absolute numbers and percentages. Comparisons between inclusiveness target countries (ITC) and non-ITC (defined by Cooperation in Science & Technology Action) were performed using Fisher's exact test.
RESULTS: Seventy-three cen
