Nursing ethics has long taken the bedside encounter as the moral center of practice. Yet this focus becomes incomplete when the material conditions of care are treated as ethically external to nursing itself. Ordinary clinical supplies such as gloves, masks, gowns, syringes, drapes, and linens are commonly understood as neutral instruments of safe and competent care. This paper argues that such neutrality is philosophically misleading. The materials through which nursing is enacted are embedded in global systems of labor, extraction, manufacture, circulation, use, and disposal that may involve

BACKGROUND: Both vulnerability and integrity represent action-guiding concepts in nursing practice. However, they are primarily discussed regarding patients-not nurses-and considered independently from rather than in relation to each other.
AIM: The aim of this paper is to characterize the moral dimension of nurses' vulnerability and integrity, specify the concepts' relationship in nurses' clinical practice and, ultimately, allow a more fine-grained understanding.
DESIGN: This discursive paper demonstrates how vulnerability and integrity relate to each other in nursing practice and carves ou

Dualism has shaped current healthcare based on the dichotomies of body-mind, science-spirituality and life-death, consolidating a biomedical paradigm that treats the patient as an object, marginalising the spiritual dimension. This article explores Baruch Spinoza's philosophy as an alternative to the ethics of nursing care, integrating the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions within the same ontological continuum. Through a philosophical-conceptual approach inspired by hermeneutic interpretation, key concepts from the work Ethics are presented, inviting the reader to reflect on them i

BackgroundDisaster scenarios challenge both novice and experienced nurses to navigate complex ethical dilemmas in resource-limited environments. Traditional nursing education often leaves new nurses unprepared for the ethical demands of disaster nursing. Utilitarianism must often guide triage ethics and decision-making. There is a critical need to equip nursing students with these ethical competencies.Research question/AimThis study explores nursing students' lived experiences using introductory triage ethics in mass casualty incident simulation (MCIS).Research designA qualitative, interpretiv

The perceived problem of the theory-practice gap is built upon the assumption that theory can and must be directly applied to nursing practice, otherwise it is irrelevant. Whilst the spirit in which this claim is made is healthy, the assumption is false. An examination of the Greek origins of theory and practice show that the ancient Greeks had different terms for the different types of knowledge contained within theory and within practice. The type of knowledge associated with practice could not be taught through theory, nor well represented in theoretical terms. The knowledge of the bicycle

This is a conceptual article exploring global voyeurism and service, overlaying ethical considerations in service within the profession of forensic nursing. Key elements considered include examining and reflecting on personal motivations, benefits, and consequences of service when viewed through an ethical perspective. Through this article we seek to examine the relationships between poverty tourism and service, while better supporting individual forensic nurses in their quest to align their actions with the ethical and practice comportment standards within the profession of nursing service gl

Contemporary nursing practice increasingly takes place within culturally, religiously, and ethically plural healthcare environments. Although professional standards provide a shared ethical foundation, limited conceptual attention has been given to how nurses' religious moral identities influence ethical reasoning during cross-gender care. Existing discussions of professionalism remain largely grounded in secular ethical perspectives, leaving insufficient exploration of how faith-based moral traditions may contribute to professional identity and moral agency. This paper examines gender interac

In the context of modern nursing practice that is embedded within complex social situations, critical discussions about the contribution of major philosophers are relevant and important. Whilst nurse theorists have advanced and shaped nursing as a discipline, other major philosophers can offer much to advance nursing enquiry. In this paper, we focus on philosopher Roy Bhaskar who, amongst others, developed critical realism, a philosophy for social science which connects with how many of us think about the world. Bhaskar's work focuses our attention on the interplay between structure and agency

BACKGROUND: Nurses are integral to delivering humanistic care in palliative care settings. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) boasts significant potential for palliative care practices, its integration raises critical ethical concerns such as AI’s impact on patient autonomy and its risks of depersonalized care that warrant further exploration. METHODS: A qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis was conducted to explore nurses’ perspectives on the potential impact of AI integration in palliative care, with a focus on ethical considerations and the prospective actions needed for imple

OBJECTIVES: End-of-life care poses significant ethical challenges for nurses, requiring a deep understanding of moral empathy and ethical decision-making. This study examines the impact of these factors on end-of-life decision-making among nurses in oncology and pain management units in Egypt.
METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed to gather data from participants at a single point in time, facilitating an analysis of the relationships among ethical principles, moral empathy, and nursing practice. The study involved 246 registered nurses with at least 6 months of experience, selected

BACKGROUND: The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be ethically charged, which can create challenges for health-care workers.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency with which nurses and residents have experienced ethical confrontations and what factors are associated with increased frequency.

Healthcare systems routinely frame breastfeeding as an ethical and clinical priority requiring institutional protection, particularly in maternity and newborn services. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative represents a global effort to embed these commitments through policy, practice, and environmental support. While these protections are well established for patient-mothers, far less attention has been given to how they are applied to the nursing workforce responsible for enacting them. The authors critically appraise an ethical contradiction experienced by lactating nurse-mothers. Breastfeed
