Living Alone and Feelings of Depression Among Adults Age 18 and Older.

Objectives-This report presents national estimates of self-reported feelings of depression among adults by whether they lived alone or with others. Methods-Data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey were used to describe differences in self-reported feelings of depression and living arrangement by selected sociodemographic characteristics and social and emotional support among adults age 18 and older. The measure of living arrangement was categorized as living alone or living with others. Results-Overall, 16.0% of adults lived alone in 2021. Reported feelings of depression were higher

Hypnotic susceptibility, cognitive dissociation, and runner's high in a sample of marathon runners.

I studied the hypnotic ability of marathon runners as it relates to cognitive dissociation while running and to runner's high. Dissociating runners use a cognitive style in which they cut themselves off from the sensory feedback they would normally receive from their body. Marathon runners demonstrated high hypnotic susceptibility scores. Additionally, use of dissociation as a running strategy during the marathon was positively related to susceptibility, and runners who dissociated in training had higher susceptibility scores than did other runners. Runner's high was not related to hypnotic su

Anxiety and/or the depressive syndromes.

The relationship of anxiety to depression in a number of the depressive and neurotic syndromes (agitated depressive syndrome, affective hypochondriacal syndrome, depressed obsessive-compulsive syndrome, phobic and obsessive-compulsive syndrome, anxiety state, depressive neurotic syndrome) is far from clear. Are anxiety and depression entirely separate disorders which may co-exist in the same patient? Does anxiety give rise to the depression? Does depression give rise to the anxiety? Are anxiety and depression manifestations of a single underlying disorders, dysphoria? Therapeutic responsivity

Efficacy and safety of midazolam and ketamine in paediatric upper endoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Upper endoscopy can be successfully carried out in children under deep sedation and anaesthesia. However, the best method of upper endoscopy for children who require gastrointestinal intervention has yet to be defined. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of the sedation induced by intravenous midazolam and ketamine during upper endoscopy in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included patients ages 3-18years who had undergone upper endoscopy. All subjects received IV midazolam and ketamine. During the intervention, hypoxia, tachycar

Intraoperative smile in a multiple sclerosis patient with medication-refractory tremor.

Deep brain stimulation has been utilized to improve disease symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease, dystonia, essential tremor, and other neuropsychiatric syndromes such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. Deep brain stimulation has also been observed to improve tremor for select patients with multiple sclerosis. During intraoperative stimulation in these multiple sclerosis patients, researchers have observed a wide spectrum of motor and sensory phenomena, but no stimulation-induced emotional responses have been reported. We detailed intraoperative smiling associated with s

Acute ethanol-induced changes in cerebral blood flow.

Using high-resolution single photon emission computed tomography, the authors studied changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in six healthy men after the men rapidly consumed intoxicating amounts of ethanol. When the subjects were given intravenous placebo before ethanol intake, regional CBF was significantly increased over baseline in the right prefrontal cortex, but no significant change in CBF was observed when the subjects received intravenous naloxone before ethanol intake. The results indicate that euphoria occurring during acute ethanol intake is associated with activation of the right pr

Case report: Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome, mania, and compulsive buying in a patient with Parkinson's disease.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms and syndromes are among the most common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease but they are frequently unrecognized and untreated. Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome is an uncommon complication of the treatment of Parkinson's disease, characterized by an addictive use of dopamine far more than the dosage required for treatment of objective motor impairment, leading to severe dyskinesia, euphoria, aggressivity, or psychosis. We present a paradigmatic case of Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome, Mania, and Compulsive Buying in a 55-year-old male with Parkinson's Disease. We

Postictal Mania Versus Postictal Psychosis.

PIM (postictal mania) or PIP (postictal psychosis) usually comes on after a single episode or a seizure cluster of generalized tonic-clonic or complex partial secondarily generalized seizures. Patients maintain a lucid interval of clear consciousness which precedes a psychotic episode. The symptoms may include insomnia, hallucinations, delusions, elated expansive mood, euphoria, and distractibility. We present a case of a 62-year-old male with PIP or mania preceding an episode of seizure. In the light of this case report, we illustrate the importance of being vigilant about the psychotic sympt

[Paretic neurosyphilis: report of five patients].

We report five male patients, aged 35 to 63 years who suffered from paretic neurosyphilis. The clinical course was that of a subacute dementia with a frontal syndrome, with more apathy than euphoria. All were HIV negative and four were heterosexual. In all, the cerebrospinal fluid had a mononuclear pleocytosis and a positive VDRL. EEG was abnormal in the 3 cases in whom it was performed. One patient in whom a brain angiography was performed, had images of vasculitis. Treatment with 18-24 million units of penicillin per day during two weeks or more, was partially effective.

[Toxic psychoses from atropine and scopolamine].

Psychoses caused by an intoxication with atropine or scopolamine are rarely published. Nevertheless atropine and scopolamine were being used in the ancient civilisations and are still in use today. The intoxication is characterised by dose-dependent and substance-dependent syndrome with specific central and peripheral symptoms. Atropine and scopolamine cause a central and peripheral anticholinergic blockade of the muscarine receptor. Psychiatric symptoms include restlessness, excitement, hallucinations, euphoria, disorientation but also stupor, coma and respiratory depression. History, pathoph

The prevalence and impact of major life stressors among pathological gamblers.

Major traumatic events were discovered in the histories of 23% of pathological gamblers seeking hospital treatment. These high-trauma patients were compared with groups of gambler patients who had experienced insignificant, low, or moderate amounts of life trauma. High-trauma patients tended, as measured by standard psychometrics, to be more depressed, anxious, and avoidant in personality style; they were also more likely to be abusing alcohol or other drugs. In their discussion the authors focus on the concept of learned dysthymia, a chronic state of negative affect related to cumulative life

Oxytocin prevents cocaine-induced high-affect 50-kHz vocalizations in female rats.

Cocaine's reinforcing properties are a key factor underlying the broad prevalence of cocaine use disorder. Few behavioral measures are capable of assessing cocaine-induced euphoria in murine models, limiting effective treatment options. However, positive affective states can be measured in rats by assessing the production of high-frequency, 50-kHz, vocalizations. Oxytocin (OXT) has been shown to attenuate cocaine-mediated behaviors in rodent models; however, the effect of OXT on cocaine-induced euphoria remains unknown. We addressed this by randomly assigning female rats to saline-saline, sali

Pain sensitivity, mood and plasma endocrine levels in man following long-distance running: effects of naloxone.

The effects of intense exercise on pain perception, mood, and plasma endocrine levels in man were studied under naloxone and saline conditions. Twelve long-distance runners (mean weekly mileage = 41.5) were evaluated on thermal, ischemic, and cold pressor pain tests and on mood visual analogue scales (VAS). Blood was drawn for determination of plasma levels of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (BEir), growth hormone (GH), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), and prolactin (PRL). These procedures were undertaken before and after a 6.3 mile run at 85% of maximal aerobic capacity. Subjects par

Acute mania and hemichorea.

A 61-year-old man suddenly became euphoric and talkative. Later the same day, he developed hemichoreic movements of the left limbs. The patient fulfilled the DSM-IV criteria for a manic episode by abnormally and persistently elevated mood, decreased need for sleep, high distractibility, pressured speech, increased goal-directed activity, and hypersexuality. The mood changes persisted for several weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a right thalamic infarction. The co-occurrence of hemichorea and mania caused by focal thalamic lesion is very rare. It may be explained by dysfunc

Free-base cocaine smoking.

Six healthy male, paid subjects smoked 50 mg of free-base cocaine in a specially designed glass pipe under a rigidly controlled smoking protocol. The method of heating the pipe and the temperature that produced the most efficient and consistent vaporization of the drug had been determined experimentally. The psychological and cardiovascular effects of smoking free-base cocaine were recorded. Approximately 26% of th original material was recovered from the pipe after smoking. Simulated smoking experiments in vitro indicated that only 44% of the material not trapped in the pipe was cocaine and t

11-hydroxy- 9 -tetrahydrocannabinol: pharmacology, disposition, and metabolism of a major metabolite of marihuana in man.

11-Hydroxy-Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, administered intravenously to man, produces psychologic and pharmacologic effects that persist for several hours. The drug and its metabolites are excreted in urine and feces for more than 1 week. The pharmacology, disposition, and metabolism of 11-hydroxy-Delta(9)-tetra-hydrocannabinol mimic that of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, thus providing evidence that Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (the major active component of marihuana) is converted to the 11-hydroxy compound in man, the latter compound being responsible for the effects.

Non-medical Use of Naphazoline (Naphthyzin): Two Case Reports.

: The paper describes 2 case reports of non-medical use of Naphazoline (Naphthyzin). Both demonstrate that the peripherally acting alpha-adrenergic agonist Naphazoline obtains some addictive potential. The drug produces a feeling of euphoria, which resembles the perceived effects of psychostimulants. Both patients and people who consume Naphazoline for intoxication report increased tolerance after repeated use which indicates the addictive potential of the substance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first examination of non-medical Naphazoline use and the first attempt to describe its

Death from a possible anaphylactic reaction to ecstasy.

Ecstasy (3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA) is a recreational drug widely used among young people in discos or rave parties (1,2). MDMA is taken because it gives a feeling of euphoria, enhances energy and sociability, and heightens sensations and sexual arousal. However, several side effects have been described: headache, nausea, anorexia, xerostomia, insomnia, myalgia, trismus, and bruxism (2,3). More serious complications have also been reported, sometimes even leading to death: hyperthermia, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure, liver failure

[Positive and negative reinforcement. Its correction by narcotics].

Achievement of efficacy by a functional system develops subjective sensation, which is necessary to understand the quality of a body's particular system. The mechanisms responsible for positive and negative reinforcement serves this purpose. The involvement of endogenous opioids and dopamine in the telemesencephalic structures in euphoria, dysphoria, and pain is discussed. There is a similarity of the neurophysiology and neurochemistry of positive and negative reinforcements. Craving for drug abuse is associated with the action of functional systems, whose result is the most comfortable emotio

Psychedelic-induced hypomania and mania: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Serotonergic psychedelics are increasingly investigated as treatments for affective disorders. Concerns persist regarding their potential to induce hypomania or mania, particularly in individuals with bipolar spectrum vulnerability. Whether these substances precipitate transient mood switches or contribute to persistent bipolar illness or diagnostic transition remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review of human studies examining manic or hypomanic symptoms following exposure to serotonergic psychedelics (psilocybin, LSD, mescaline, DMT/ayahuasca) or MDMA (CRD420251160656).
