Prevention and control of meningococcal disease: Updates from the Global Meningococcal Initiative in Eastern Europe.

The Global Meningococcal Initiative (GMI) aims to prevent invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) worldwide through education, research and cooperation. In March 2019, a GMI meeting was held with a multidisciplinary group of experts and representatives from countries within Eastern Europe. Across the countries represented, IMD surveillance is largely in place, with incidence declining in recent decades and now generally at <1 case per 100,000 persons per year. Predominating serogroups are B and C, followed by A, and cases attributable to serogroups W, X and Y are emerging. Available vaccines diff

Socio-economic factors in the differential upsurge of tick-borne encephalitis in Central and Eastern Europe.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), the most serious widespread vector-borne disease of humans in Europe, increased from 2- to 30-fold in many Central and Eastern European countries from 1992 to 1993, coinciding with independence from Soviet rule. Unemployment and low income have been shown in Latvia to be statistically associated with high-risk behaviour involving harvest of wild foods from tick-infested forests, and also with not being vaccinated against TBE. Archival data for 1970--2005 record major changes in the agricultural and industrial sectors, and consequent changes in the abiotic and bio

Recent declines in reported syphilis rates in eastern Europe and central Asia: are the epidemics over?

BACKGROUND: Since the early 1990s, major syphilis epidemics have occurred in the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. The new and rapidly changing societal and economic conditions in these countries challenge their traditional approaches to the control of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Nevertheless, following a steady increase until 1997, reported syphilis incidence has declined during the past 3 years in most parts of the region. We examine these trends against a background of ongoing changes in service delivery, care seeking behaviour, and case finding practices

Contraception and induced abortion in Armenia: a critical need for family planning programs in eastern Europe.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the number of induced abortions per woman and the reasons for selecting induced abortion among parous Armenian women. METHODS: A consecutive series of 200 women attending an abortion clinic in Yerevan, Armenia, were queried by a physician about their reproductive histories. RESULTS: Women younger than 20 years of age reported a median of 1 and women older than 40 years reported a median of 8 induced abortions in their lifetimes (overall median = 3). Lack of contraceptive information was the major reason cited for not using contraception.

Genomic differentiation and conservation relevance of isolated marginal Primula farinosa populations in Central-Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Quaternary climatic oscillations produced heterogeneous range dynamics in European cold-adapted plants. Primula farinosa L. has been discussed in the context of the interglacial expansion model for moisture-demanding cold-adapted species. However, it remains unclear whether isolated low-elevation populations in Central European calcareous fens and wet meadows represent long-term relicts or recently established populations. METHODS: We used RADseq-derived SNPs from four sampling localities in the Balaton Region of Hungary and one low-elevation comparative locality at Lipce in the

Unequal survival after ischaemic heart disease in Eastern Europe: a sex-specific GBD 2023 analysis.

AIMS: Sex disparities in ischaemic heart disease (IHD) outcomes are well documented in Western Europe, but remain poorly characterized across Eastern Europe, a region marked by substantial mortality inequalities. We aimed to determine whether population-level case fatality among individuals living with IHD differed by sex in Eastern Europe and to identify modifiable risk factors associated with disparities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed sex-specific estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2023 study for seven Eastern European countries. Age-standardized IHD mortality and prevalence rat

Decolonizing addiction treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Confronting Russian narcology and Western retreat.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) face a dual crisis in addiction treatment. On one side, Russian imperial legacies persist through punitive "narcology," now weaponized amid ongoing aggression. On the other, Western retrenchment, marked by abrupt aid suspensions and dwindling harm-reduction budgets, has weakened the evidence-based counterweight that once challenged authoritarian approaches. The result is a convergence of punitive logics that marginalizes people who use drugs, whether through active repression, such as the closure of methadone programs in Crimea, or sudden neglect, such as

Hemodialysis system privatization and patient survival: a report from a large registry Eastern Europe cohort.

BACKGROUND: There has been a rapid increase in incident and prevalent rates of hemodialysis (HD) patients in Romania following the 2004 system privatization, but little is known about the impact of privatization on patient outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively examined the outcome during 1 year of 8161 prevalent HD patients registered in the Romanian Renal Registry at 31 December 2011. Standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated for each for-profit (FP) and non-profit (NP) HD provider. RESULTS: The 12-month SMR across all HD chain providers was 1.27. FP Chain 1 and the "other" group ha

Evidence-based psychological interventions and athletes' mental health: A perspective from Central and Eastern Europe.

This perspective provides a concise overview of the authors' viewpoint on evidence-based interventions for supporting athletes' mental health in Central and Eastern Europe. First, the specifics of these interventions are presented, along with the assumptions and mechanisms relating to changes in athletes' habitual inappropriate behaviour and thinking patterns, and the teaching of skills necessary for healthy functioning. Four prominent therapeutic approaches that incorporate cognitive behavioural principles in sport are then distinguished: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical b

Incidence and prevalence of kidney replacement therapy in Central and Eastern Europe-trends from the ERA Registry.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) practices in Europe are heterogeneous, with apparent differences between Western and Central/Eastern Europe. However, time trends in KRT incidence and prevalence in Central and Eastern Europe have not been previously reported. Therefore, we aimed to describe trends in incidence and prevalence of KRT in Central and Eastern Europe from 2010 to 2021. METHODS: Data on incident and prevalent KRT patients from 19 Central and Eastern European countries between the years 2010 and 2021 were derived from the European Renal Association (ERA) Re

Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Central and Eastern Europe: Implementation and Maturity of Whole-Genome Sequencing for Surveillance.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remains a major public health challenge in the WHO European Region, which reports the highest global proportion of rifampicin-resistant and MDR-TB cases. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has emerged as a key tool for improving drug-resistance detection and supporting molecular surveillance. However, the level of genomic implementation across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) remains insufficiently characterized. This scoping review aimed to evaluate the use of WGS for MDR-TB in CEE countries and to classify implementation maturity us

Rapid antiretroviral treatment start seems as vital and cost-effective strategy in Central and Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: It is essential to deliver specialist human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care with maximum effectiveness, but also minimum time delay. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether rapid linkage to care defined as starting combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) on the day of the first visit at the HIV clinic is a costeffective approach. METHODS: In the analysis, Markov's lifetime model presented in our previous study was implemented. The inputs used in the model were updated in the terms of costs, life expectancy, and patient characteristics. For the analysis we used information from t

The Presence of Ehrlichia Canis in Rhipicephalus Bursa Ticks Collected from Ungulates in Continental Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Rhipicephalus bursa is a common tick parasite of small-to-medium size ungulates, principally in warm, temperate, and subtropical areas. Although common in livestock and showing a wide geographic distribution, its epidemiological role in tick-borne bacterial disease is barely known. This study addressed the knowledge gap and aimed to screen for the presence of Anaplasmataceae and spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia species in R. bursa ticks collected from domestic animals in Romania, Eastern Europe. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 64 pools of R. bursa ticks collected from small
