Background/Objectives: Healthy eating and regular physical activity support chronic disease prevention and healthy aging, while smoking, sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption, and excess weight remain important public health concerns in Europe. Nutritional status and lifestyle behaviors are also relevant to the progression and management of obesity-related metabolic and degenerative diseases, which justify a broader, systems-oriented analysis of lifestyle-health profiles. This study examines the associations between lifestyle behaviors, excess weight, and population health outcomes across Eur

The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the legal provision of maternal and child health care in the member states of the European Union (EU). The relevance of the study lies in the analysis of modern European approaches to the regulation of maternal and child health care, as well as in determining the possibilities of adapting positive experience for states that have embarked on the path of European integration. The methodological basis of the study is a complex of general scientific and special legal methods. As a result of the study, it has been established that the legal regula

BACKGROUND: Globalized supply chains make it harder to regulate hazardous chemicals in products. These include some phthalates with reproductive and developmental toxicity that maybe found in a variety of products. The European Union (EU) was among the first economies to implement policies to limit their use, yet vulnerable populations (children, pregnant women) are exposed to restricted phthalates. Phthalates' regulation varies significantly by product or chemical compound, but literature lacks systematization of current EU legislation.
METHODS: We examined EU regulatory framework for 19 maj

INTRODUCTION: Infections caused by Campylobacter spp. represent a severe threat to public health worldwide. National action plans have included source attribution studies as a way to quantify the contribution of specific sources and understand the dynamic of transmission of foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and Campylobacter. Such information is crucial for implementing targeted intervention. The aim of this study was to predict the sources of human campylobacteriosis cases across multiple countries using available whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data and explore the impact of data availabilit

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a quantitative pest risk assessment to assess whether the import of cut roses provides a pathway for the introduction of Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) into the EU. The assessment was limited to the entry and establishment steps. A pathway model was used to assess how many T. leucotreta individuals would survive and emerge as adults from commercial or household wastes in an EU NUTS2 region climatically suitable in a specific season. This pathway model for entry consisted of three com

BACKGROUND: Cachexia has significant impact on the patients' quality of life and prognosis. It is frequently observed in patients with cancer, especially in advanced stages, but prevalence data for the overall population are lacking. Good quality estimates of cancer cachexia in general and for each of the major cancer types would be highly relevant for potential treatment development efforts in this field. Both the USA and European Union (EU) have implemented special clinical development rules for such rare disorders what are called 'orphan diseases'. The cut-off level for a disease to be cons

West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) circulate in several European Union (EU) countries. The risk of transfusion-transmitted West Nile virus (TT-WNV) has been recognized, and preventive blood safety measures have been implemented. We summarized the applied interventions in the EU countries and assessed the safety of the blood supply by compiling data on WNV positivity among blood donors and on reported TT-WNV cases. The paucity of reported TT-WNV infections and the screening results suggest that blood safety interventions are effective. However, limited circulation of WNV in the EU and

BACKGROUND: Hazardous and harmful alcohol use and high blood pressure are central risk factors related to premature non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality worldwide. A reduction in the prevalence of both risk factors has been suggested as a route to reach the global NCD targets. This study aims to highlight that screening and interventions for hypertension and hazardous and harmful alcohol use in primary healthcare can contribute substantially to achieving the NCD targets.
METHODS: A consensus conference based on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical guidelines, experimental studies,

Living organ donation (LD) is an increasingly established practice. Whereas in the United States and Canada LD by minors has occasionally been reported, LD by minors seems to be largely absent in the European Union (EU). It is currently unclear whether this is the result of a different legal approach. This study is the first to systematically analyze the regulations of EU member states, Norway, and Iceland toward LD by minors. Relevant regulations were identified by searching government websites, translated, compared, and sent for verification to national legal experts. We identified five coun

The objective of this study was to assess recent data on the prevalence of chronic pain as part of chronic diseases; the prevalence of chronic pain as a chronic condition in its own right; the costs attributed to chronic pain; and the European Union (EU) policies to addressing chronic pain. Recent literature was reviewed for data on the prevalence and cost implications of chronic pain in the EU. Following on from an earlier systematic review, 8 databases were searched for prevalence and 10 for cost information from 2009 to 2011 and relevant EU organizations were contacted. Ten cost and 29 prev

This report up-dates information on the national situation of cervical cancer screening in the member states of the European Union. There is yet high diversity in the status of cervical screening, and rapid changes expected to occur in the situation in many countries. It is important to underline differences in the health care and other components in order to allow a proper interpretation of the summary results published elsewhere in this Special Issue. The brief national descriptions along with up-dated information on the recent references are available from all but one member states.

CONTEXT: Biologicals are a relatively new class of medicines that carry specific risks (eg, immunogenicity). However, limited information is available on the nature and timing of safety problems with their use that were identified after approval.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the nature, frequency, and timing of safety-related regulatory actions for biologicals following approval in the United States and/or the European Union.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Follow-up of a group of biologicals approved in the United States and/or European Union between January 1995 and June 2007. Vaccines, allergenic products

This is a study of carcinogen risk assessment of the chlorinated solvent trichloroethylene within the European Union existing substances program and the classification and labeling process. The focus is on the most active and influential participants of this process, namely, those from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden, and from industry. The member state and other experts have different opinions regarding the appropriate classification of trichloroethylene for mutagenicity (no classification or category 3) and carcinogenicity (category 3, 2, or 1). In this article these differences are

BACKGROUNDUp-to-date estimates of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence in both general and key populations are challenging to obtain because of underdiagnosis, heterogeneous surveillance systems and underrepresentation of key populations.AIMWe aimed to test the Workbook Method to estimate chronic HBV prevalence in 2022 across the EU/EEA, by country and among men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID) and migrants.METHODSWe used the Robert Koch Institute's version of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Workbook Method to generate HBV prevalence est

INTRODUCTION: During the last century, many ethics codes have emerged, sometimes embedding legally binding instruments, sometimes encoding good clinical practice for the first time. Apart from the general ethical considerations in use of neuromodulation devices, regulators have tried to shield the patient, implanters, and society from possible risks related to such devices, namely, the protection of the patient's privacy and ensuring enduring manufacturer responsibility for the lifecycle of the device. This review aims to reveal the limits of ethics guidelines, the personal responsibility of t

Applications utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) have become a ubiquitous, indispensable part of modern life. This also applies to medicine where AI systems can support staff in decision-making processes and administrative tasks, but there is still uncertainty about the legality of their use. This review introduces examples from neuro-oncology, highlighting legal aspects and providing suggestions for the application of the Medical Device Regulation, the European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI Act), the General Data Protection Regulation, and potential liability issues. AI systems

Background/Objectives: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical devices has significant potential for transforming healthcare in the European Union (EU). However, AI medical devices are regulated under the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) and the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR), as well as horizontal legislation such as the AI Act, resulting in a multilayered framework that raises difficulties for all stakeholders. This scoping review aims to identify and classify the challenges associated with the regulation of AI medical devices in the EU and the corre
