Longer auditory and visual P300 latencies in patients with narcolepsy.

To compare auditory and visual P300 amplitude and latency magnitudes and topographies in patients with narcolepsy and normal subjects, 20 patients with polysomnographically-confirmed narcolepsy and 40 normal subjects were administered auditory and visual P300 testing using 31 evenly spaced scalp electrodes. Patients with narcolepsy were then administered baseline polysomnograms and objective (MSLT, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test or MWT) and subjective tests (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Clinical Global Impression) of daytime sleepiness. Patients had longer 31-electrode mean age-adjusted auditory

Signal in the noise: Altered brain activation among adolescent alcohol users detected via the analysis of intra-individual variability1.

RATIONALE: Unlike its average level, the variability in brain activation over time or trials can capture subtle and brief disruptions likely to occur among participants with low-to-moderate levels of substance use or misuse. OBJECTIVE: The present study used this intra-individual variability measurement approach to detect neural processing differences associated with light-to-moderate use of alcohol among 14-19-year-old adolescents. METHOD: A total of 128 participants reporting any level of alcohol use during the previous 6 months and 87 participants reporting no use during this period compl

The effects of HIV on P300 are moderated by familial risk for substance dependence: implications for a theory of brain reserve.

BACKGROUND: The goal of the study was to test the validity of additive versus synergistic versus underadditive versions of brain reserve theory within the context of HIV/AIDS. In addition, it tested the convergent validity of 2 operational definitions of premorbid reserve: verbal IQ (VIQ) and a family history (FH) of substance abuse or dependence. METHODS: Seventy HIV-1 seronegative and 115 HIV-1 seropositive male and female volunteers were assigned to 4 subgroups defined by the crossing of a VIQ score < versus > or = 90 with the presence versus absence of a paternal history of alcohol, cocai

[P300 latencies in epileptic children: the differences among various epileptic syndromes].

Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 129 epileptic children of 5 to 20 years of age. To clarify the developmental changes in each of the epileptic syndromes, P300 latencies of ERPs were examined. ERPs were elicited with the auditory oddball paradigm. P300 detection was occasionally difficult in epileptic children. Mean P300 latency in epileptic children (375 +/- 39.7 msec) was significantly prolonged compared with that in normal control children. (355 +/- 39.1 msec). P300 latencies in the children with symptomatic partial epilepsies were prolonged and were not recognized

How friendly is a little friendly competition? Evidence of self-interest and empathy during outcome evaluation.

Although previous studies have shown that brain potentials recorded from passive observers differ when gambling-task outcomes are delivered to a friend or a stranger, it is unclear how these outcome evaluations are reflected in brain potentials during active competition. The present study recorded event-related potentials (ERP) from 16 normal adults playing an interactive gambling task against both a friend and a stranger. In this task, the P300 was modulated by the feedback valence (gain or loss) and the nature of the interpersonal relationship, such that it was larger when competing against

Ownership and agency modulate self-positivity effect: Behavioral and neural evidence.

In value assessment, the self-positivity effect refers to the tendency to assign higher value to self-related objects. However, the distinct and interactive contributions of ownership and agency to this effect remain unclear. Across four behavioral studies (total N = 137) and an event-related potentials (ERP) study (N = 30), we manipulated ownership and agency using an object evaluation paradigm while recording subjective value ratings and P300 amplitudes. Results showed that ownership enhanced valuation, whereas agency influenced valuation only when the object was already self-owned, with the

Long-term auditory processing outcomes in early implanted young adults with cochlear implants: The mismatch negativity vs. P300 response.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term outcomes of early implanted, young adult cochlear implant (CI) users remain variable. We measured auditory discrimination by means of event-related potentials in this population to examine whether variability at the level of cortical auditory processing helps to explain speech abilities. METHODS: Using an auditory oddball paradigm, the P300 and Mismatch Negativity (MMN) were measured in 8 young adult CI users and 14 normal-hearing peers. We related P300 amplitude and latency to clinical speech perception scores in quiet and to duration of deafness. RESULTS: All individua

When is giving an impulse? An ERP investigation of intuitive prosocial behavior.

Human prosociality is often assumed to emerge from exerting reflective control over initial, selfish impulses. However, recent findings suggest that prosocial actions can also stem from processes that are fast, automatic and intuitive. Here, we attempt to clarify when prosocial behavior may be intuitive by examining prosociality as a form of reward seeking. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), we explored whether a neural signature that rapidly encodes the motivational salience of an event-the P300-can predict intuitive prosocial motivation. Participants allocated varying amounts of money be

Alterations in affective processing of attack images following September 11, 2001.

The events of September 11, 2001 created unprecedented uncertainty about safety in the United States and created an aftermath with significant psychological impact across the world. This study examined emotional information encoding in 31 healthy individuals whose stress response symptoms ranged from none to a moderate level shortly after the attacks as assessed by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. Participants viewed attack-related, negative (but attack-irrelevant), and neutral images while their event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Attack images elicited enhanced P300 relati

[The regulation of negative and positive emotions during picture viewing: an ERP study].

The study examines the effects of cognitive reappraisal on the event-related potentials (ERPs) to affective stimuli. Participants (n = 53) were asked either to attend affective images, or to down-regulate negative affect, or to up-regulate positive affect. Reappraisal of negative images was associated with attenuation of the P300 and late positive potential (LPP) over parietal regions, whereas reappraisal of positive images had no significant effect on ERP components. The weak P300 reduction correlated with high personality scores of negative affectivity. We assume that only down-regulation of

Encouraging attention to inclusion cues enhances P3b responses and subjective amelioration after social exclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that attentional allocation to inclusion cues is associated with subjective amelioration from social exclusion. However, individuals high in avoidant attachment show reduced attention to inclusion cues while still exhibiting subjective amelioration comparable with those low in avoidance. This study examined whether experimentally encouraging attention to inclusion cues enhances attentional processing and subjective amelioration following social exclusion, and whether these effects differ as a function of avoidant attachment. METHODS: Thirty-six undergradu

Age-related no-go P300 amplitudes are moderated by exposure to early-life stress.

Deficits in inhibitory control are common with advancing age and may underlie declines in other complex cognitive functions. The inhibitory P300 event-related potential (ERP) generally decreases in amplitude with age, reflecting deficits in inhibitory performance evaluation and adaptation, with possible generators including precentral and inferior frontal gyri and midcingulate and parietal cortex. Exposure to early-life stress (ELS) is also associated with deficits in inhibitory control, smaller P300 amplitudes, and dysfunction in regions associated with P300 generation. Although biopsychosoci

Corpus callosum and P300 in schizophrenia.

Functional abnormalities in the interhemispheric transfer via the corpus callosum in schizophrenia may result in filtering problems and information processing problems, which may in turn be related to the synchronization of cortical event-related activity. To explore whether a relationship exists between corpus callosum (CC) size, measured with in-vivo magnetic resonance imaging, and late auditory event-related P300 potentials, 50 patients with schizophrenia as well as 50 healthy controls were examined. The absolute CC size and subregional areas, as well as the CC areas adjusted for total brai

Magnetoencephalographic evidence for common sources of long latency fields to rare target and rare novel visual stimuli.

This study used magnetoencephalography to examine the possibility that different generators account for the long-latency event-related potential (P300), evoked by rare target and by rare non-target, novel visual stimuli, in a visual oddball counting task performed by seven subjects. As expected, P300 peak latency was longer in response to rare targets compared to novel, non-target stimuli. Two main source regions were found for the Target- as well as for the Novel-P300, one in the temporal and one in the occipital lobe. Centers of neural activity were observed in the vicinity of the superior t

Long-term abstinence syndrome in heroin addicts: indices of P300 alterations associated with a short memory task.

Attentional deficits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of opioid addicts. The P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) is considered as a manifestation of attentional operations. The authors' goal was the comparison of P300 elicited during a short memory test between subjects with prolonged heroin abstinence and current heroin users as well as healthy controls. The P300 component was evaluated during the anticipatory period of a short memory task in 20 patients characterized by a past history of opioid dependence (6 months abstinence), in 18 current heroin users and in 20 he

Visual event-related potentials in progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, striatonigral degeneration, and Parkinson's disease.

To determine whether there are characteristic changes in event-related potentials (ERPs) in parkinsonian syndromes we studied 8 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 10 patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD), 9 patients with striatonigral degeneration (SND), and 16 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) with a mean duration of illness shorter than 5 years in each group. A visual oddball paradigm was employed to elicit P300. P300 to the rare target and rare nontarget stimuli and reaction time (RT) to rare target stimuli in each group were compared with those in t

Characteristics of No-go-P300 component during somatosensory Go/No-go paradigms.

The present study investigated one of the characteristics of No-go-related brain activity during somatosensory Go/No-go paradigms, by manipulating the stimulus site and response hand. Somatosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in ten right-handed subjects. Electrical stimulation was delivered to the second and fifth digit of one hand, and the subjects had to respond to a Go stimulus by pushing a button with the thumb contralateral to the stimulated side as quickly as possible. We focused on the peak amplitude and latency of Som-Go-P300 (P300 evoked by somatosensory Go stimuli)

The LPP indexes baseline and treatment-related changes in anxiety sensitivity.

Anxiety Sensitivity (AS) is one of the most well-researched transdiagnostic risk factors for psychopathology, making it an ideal intervention target for treatment of anxiety and mood pathology. Currently, there exists a gap in understanding underlying neural mechanisms of AS. The current study sought to examine the impact of 2 brief computerized interventions on AS in order to assess the P300 and late positive potential (LPP) event-related potential (ERP) components as an index of both baseline and treatment change in AS. Participants received one of the following, with a 1-month follow-up: an

Auditory P300 Potentials as State Biomarkers for Mild-to-Moderate Depression in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 2.

Depression is a common comorbidity in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2). Despite P300 endogenous evoked potentials reliably indexing early cognitive deficits, their utility as depression biomarkers remains untested. This study aimed to characterize auditory P300 potentials as biomarkers of comorbid depression in SCA2 patients. Twenty SCA2 patients and age/sex-matched controls were stratified by Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) into depressed (≥ 14) and non-depressed (< 14) subgroups. Auditory P300 oddball paradigms were recorded, and P300 latency and amplitude analyzed in all participa
