Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in Bell's palsy.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate vestibular nerve involvement in patients with Bell's palsy with ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP and cVEMP). Ten patients who were diagnosed with Bell's palsy and ten healthy controls were included. All patients underwent VEMP recordings within 6 days after their initial presentation. Patients with Bell's palsy had greater oVEMP asymmetry ratio comparing to healthy controls (-38.4 ± 28.7 % vs -1.3 ± 19.3 %, p = 0.005). As well N10 latencies of the oVEMP response were prolonged comparing to healthy controls (11.575 vs

New perspectives on vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) measured from the cervical muscles (cVEMP, cervical VEMP) is well described and has documented clinical utility, its analogue recorded from the extraocular muscles (oVEMP, ocular VEMP) has been described only recently and is currently emerging as an additional test of otolith function. This review will, therefore, summarize recent developments in VEMP research with a focus on the oVEMP. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggest that the oVEMP is produced by otolith afferents in the superior vestibular nerve division, wh

Sex differences in pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) of the pudendal nerve are a well-established diagnostic tool for the evaluation of pelvic floor disorders. However, the possible influence of sex differences on response latencies has not been established yet. The aim of this study was to standardize the procedures and to evaluate possible effects of gender differences on anal and penile/clitoral SEPs. METHODS: The anal and dorsal penile/clitoral SEPs were recorded in 84 healthy subjects (40 males and 44 females; mean age 47.9 ± 16.6 years, range 16-81 years; mean height 168.3 ± 20.3 cm, rang

[Motor evoked potentials in thoracoabdominal aortic surgery].

Thoracoabdominal aortic disease (aneurysm or dissection) has increased in recent decades. Surgery is the curative treatment but is associated to high perioperative morbidity and mortality risks. Paraplegia is one of the most severe complications, whose incidence has decreased significantly with the implementation of spinal cord protection strategies. No single method or combination of methods has proven to be fully effective in preventing paraplegia. This review is intended to analyse the scientific evidence available on the role of intraoperative monitoring with motor evoked potentials in the

Brainstem representation of vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are caused by a short-latency reflex recorded from averaged electromyography from the sternocleidomastoid muscle evoked by intense auditory clicks. Besides peripheral vestibulopathy, abnormal VEMPs can be caused by lesions of the brainstem. The aim of this study was to analyze the topology of ischemic brain lesions generating pathological VEMPs. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with brainstem infarcts were prospectively studied using VEMPs and MR imaging to evaluate the brainstem representation of the VEMP reflex. Individual brainstem lesi

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in vestibular migraine.

Sound-induced vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) can be used to investigate saccular function, measured from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscles (SCM) in response to loud sound stimuli. The aim of the present study was to assess VEMPs in patients with vestibular migraine and to determine whether saccular function is affected by the disease. Furthermore, tests such as tilts of subjective visual vertical (SVV) and caloric testing were conducted to test whether deficits in the various tests are associated with each other. The amplitude and latency of VEMPs were measure

Pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials in normal women.

OBJECTIVE: Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) is an electrophysiological test used to evaluate sensory innervations in peripheral and central neuropathies. Pudendal SSEP has been studied in dysfunctions related to the lower urinary tract and pelvic floor. Although some authors have already described technical details pertaining to the method, the standardization and the influence of physiological variables in normative values have not yet been established, especially for women. The aim of the study was to describe normal values of the pudendal SSEP and to compare technical details with thos

Lateralized asymmetry of facial motor evoked potentials.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence that emotions are expressed more intensely on the left side of the face. This asymmetry could reflect a right hemisphere advantage in processing emotional material or an asymmetry in corticobulbar motor systems. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to test for lateralized asymmetry in the cortical control of muscles of facial expression in the lower face. METHODS: We administered TMS to the motor cortex of 50 subjects during contraction of bilateral orbicularis oris muscles. We analyzed motor evoked potentials (MEPs) with a repeated measu

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and glycerol testing.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective was to evaluate dizziness as the first symptom of endolymphatic hydrops, which could provide valuable information on the initial stages of endolymphatic hydrops development. STUDY DESIGN: The present investigation was specifically designed to establish whether a combination of the traditional glycerol test and the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) glycerol test is capable of diagnosing endolymphatic hydrops early and to identify potential Meniere's disease. The study was limited to patients who complained of dizziness as their only vestibular sym

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: history and overview.

Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) testing is a relatively new diagnostic tool that is in the process of being investigated in patients with specific vestibular disorders. In this review, we will outline the history and provide a current review of VEMP research. Briefly, the VEMP is a biphasic response elicited by loud clicks or tone bursts recorded from the tonically contracted sternocleidomastoid muscle. Current data suggest that the VEMP is a vestibulo-collic reflex whose afferent limb arises from acoustically sensitive cells in the saccule, with signals conducted via the inferior

Spatial property of motion visual evoked potentials.

The cortical evoked response to drifting patterns (motion visual evoked potentials) was investigated. When the direction of motion of the stimulus pattern was reversed upward or downward at intervals, the cortical evoked response was triggered at the moment when the pattern changed direction. The polarity reversal of the main negative component occurred between upper and lower visual field stimulations as seen in pattern reversal visual evoked potentials. Our study indicates these potentials have a compound property reflecting the visual field.

Visually evoked potentials in respiratory chain disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the frequency of abnormal visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in patients with respiratory chain disorders (RCDs). We thus wanted to investigate the frequency of abnormal VEPs in RCDs, how often VEPs are abnormal despite normal visual acuity, and which of the VEP variables are most often abnormal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Reversal checkerboard VEPs of 26 patients with RCDs, aged 32-74 years, were evaluated. RESULTS: VEPs were abnormal in 17 of the 26 cases (65%). The P100 latency was prolonged at least unilaterally in 16 patients. The P100/N145 amplitude was decr

The diagnostic value of motor evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic usefulness of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and to identify the optimal method for calculating the central conduction time. The test results were evaluated in a prospective study of 1023 neurological patients. METHODS: We evaluated the correlation between clinical and electrophysiological findings, the accuracy, the sensitivity, the percentage of subclinical abnormalities and the false negative rates of MEPs in different neurological disorders. In patients with lower motor neuron involvement, we compared the central conduction time calculated as the differ

Olfactory evoked potentials: experimental and clinical studies.

Olfactory evoked potentials (OEPs), obtained by electrical stimulation of the olfactory mucosa, were recorded in dogs and humans to develop an objective method for evaluating olfactory functions. In dogs, OEPs were recorded from the olfactory tract and the scalp. The latency of the first negative peak was approximately 40 msec. A response was not obtained after stimulation of the nasal mucosa and disappeared after sectioning of the olfactory nerve. With increasing frequencies of repetitive stimulation, the amplitude was reduced, suggesting that the response was synaptically mediated. These res
