In human and animal clinics, the early auditory potential has been used for a long time in the detection of lesions through the internal auditory way in the cerebral trunk. The aim of this work tries to determine if this non invasive test is apt to show up and to follow the evolution of lesions at the level of auditory way in the cerebral trunk of sheep with trypanosomiasis. According to the human technic, the list of the early auditory potential was realized against ten healthy sheep and ten sheep with trypanosomiasis (Trypanosoma brucei brucei) at the nervous phase. No significant anomalies

The results of recording intracranially from the auditory nerve, lower brainstem nuclei, and the inferior colliculus in more than 40 patients operated upon for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia are presented. Recordings from the auditory nerve have shown that the auditory nerve is the neural generator of the first two peaks in the human ABR. Recordings from the entrance of the eighth nerve into the brainstem and locations close to that reveal potentials; the latencies of the peaks in these potentials match those of peaks III and IV. These peaks are therefore assumed to have their sourc

Within the first 10 ms after a sine-shaped sound wave (tone pip) seven small-amplitude potentials can be recorded in persons with normal hearing and normal brainstem functions. These components, in the nanovolt range, correspond to the electrical activity of various pathways of the auditory tract. In accordance with this view the resulting potentials were assigned to the following structures in the region of the periphery and the brainstem: component I corresponds to the cochlea or acoustic nerve (receptor, II to the cochlear nucleus (medulla), III to the upper olive (caudal pons), IV to the l

Auditory evoked brain stem potentials were measured in a patient with occlusion of the basilar artery about 7 mm above its origin, resulting in the "locked-in" syndrome due to infarction at the junction of the lower one third and upper two thirds of the pons. The first three waves of the evoked response originating from the acoustic nerve and auditory nuclei in the caudal pons were normal in wave form, peak latency, and voltage level. Waves IV and V, generated in the region of the lateral lemniscus and inferior colliculus in rostral pons and caudal midbrain, demonstrated prolonged peak latency

Purpose Complaints of auditory perceptual deficits, such as tinnitus and difficulty understanding speech in background noise, among individuals with clinically normal audiograms present a perplexing problem for audiologists. One potential explanation for these "hidden" auditory deficits is loss of the synaptic connections between the inner hair cells and their afferent auditory nerve fiber targets, a condition that has been termed cochlear synaptopathy. In animal models, cochlear synaptopathy can occur due to aging or exposure to noise or ototoxic drugs and is associated with reduced auditory

Early-response auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) in humans are significantly altered in tinnitus. These changes are closely related to that seen in animals, leading to new approaches to study tinnitus based on objective parameters. The purpose of this study was to characterize the AEPs in animals with tinnitus, by assessing early to late latency responses. For behavioral evaluation, rats were trained using positive reinforcement to press a lever in the presence of an auditory stimulus and to not press during silence. The auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR) and audi

Introduction Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) are bioelectric responses that occur from acoustic stimulations, and they assess the functionality of the central auditory system. Objective The objective of the present study was to analyze the effect of musical stimulation on CAEPs. Methods The sample consisted of 42 healthy female subjects, aged between 18 and 24 years, divided into two groups - G1: without musical stimulation prior to the CAEP examination; and G2: with stimulation prior to the examination. In both groups, as a pre-collection procedure, the complete basic audiologi

OBJECTIVE: There are few reports in the literature detailing brain-stem auditory and visual evoked potentials (BAEP and VEP) in children with Krabbe disease (KD). The purpose of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis of the BAEP and VEP findings in these children.
METHODS: Charts of children with KD were reviewed. BAEP and VEP studies performed on these children were reviewed; findings in the early infantile and late onset KD (EIKD, LOKD, respectively) groups were also examined. Likelihood ratios (LR) for the neurophysiologic tests being abnormal in the various groups were also dete

A method is described for measuring middle-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) in consciously awake, non-sedated pigs during the induction of thiopentone anaesthesia (0.6 ml/kg, 2.5% thiopentone solution). It was done by using autoregressive modelling with an exogenous input (ARX). The ability to perceive pain during the induction was compared with (1) the changes in latencies and amplitudes of the MLAEP, (2) the change in a depth of anaesthesia index based on the ARX-model and (3) the change in the 95% spectral edge frequency. The pre-induction MLAEP was easily recordable and looked mu

In a retrospective study of 75 children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP), brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were recorded and subsequently correlated with birthweight, gestational age, aetiology and type of CP, neuroradiological findings, additional impairments and disabilities (including the inability to walk independently). Seventeen patients (22.7%) had abnormal BAEP recordings. Thirteen of these 17 patients (76.5%) had spastic tetraplegia, 16 patients (94.1%) were full-term infants, 12 patients (70.6%) had myoskeletal problems, 9 (52.9%) had epilepsy, 16 (94.1%) had visual impair

Hydranencephaly is a severe condition of brain characterized by the almost complete absence of the cerebral hemispheres with the thalamus, cerebellum and brainstem being preserved. This paper reports hydranencephaly in a 3-month-old boy. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the condition and an auditory evoked potential study which was performed in order to investigate residual brain function. They showed normal auditory brainstem function but no appearance of other auditory evoked potentials originating from the higher brain.

Middle latency auditory evoked potentials were recorded in two groups of ten subjects each, viz, congenitally blind (CB) and age-matched subjects with normal vision (NV). The age range for both groups was 13 to 16 years. The CB group subjects had peripheral deficits, with absence of visual evoked responses. The peak latency of the Nb wave (the maximum negativity between 38 and 48 ms) was significantly lower in the CB group compared to NV group (p < .05, one-tailed, two factor ANOVA, Tukey test). In addition to these recordings from the vertex, recordings were also made from occipital areas, to

The present investigation examined auditory evoked potential (AEP) recovery functions in both high-risk (HR, N = 23, mean = 22.3) and low-risk (LR, N = 27, mean = 23.0) males. A series of binaural auditory stimuli, with randomly interposed interstimulus intervals (ISIs) of 0.5, 1.0, and 10.0 s, were used to elicit the N1 and P2 components of the AEP. Scalp potentials were recorded from the 19 electrodes comprising the 10/20 International System. For purposes of statistical analysis, five electrode groups were created: frontal (F), central (C), parietal (P), occipital (O), and temporal (T). The

The goal of this paper was to study the auditory pathway of nine controls and nine pure dyslexic subjects using brainstem auditory evoked responses and middle latency responses. We found no differences in latency and amplitude between both groups; only a small difference in the V right/V left relation in favour of the right V wave in controls and left V wave in dyslexics. This findings is discussed in relation to cerebral dominance.
