Electroretinograms (ERGs) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to flash stimulation were recorded from 51 infants (gestational age 26 to 42 weeks; post-conceptional age (PCA) 31 to 47 weeks) to give cross-sectional data on the maturation of these responses. Sequential recordings were taken from a separate group of 24 preterm infants (gestational age 28 to 33 weeks) to give longitudinal data. There was a significant decrease in ERG a-wave latency and increase in a-b amplitude with increasing PCA in both groups. For the VEPs there was a significant decrease in latency of the early negative compon

The technique of investigating evoked visual potentials (EVP) is resumed within the context of electrophysiological methods as applied in optic neuritis. Several typical courses of the disease are case-reported in this account. In conclusion, authors recommend further on EVP implications due to its objectivity, non-invasiveness and time-sparing with a possible automated evaluation.

Six cases of optic nerve head drusen ophthalmoscopically are reported. Five of these had pathological latencies of the P 100 potentials on VEP examination. Only three of the patients had subjective visual complaints; all six, however, had variable visual field defects. Optic nerve head drusen are an important differential diagnosis, which can be readily established especially in those younger patients who need neurological and ophthalmological examination because of visual disturbances and pathological VEP responses.

The case in study is a 13-year-old male with tubercular granuloma in the optic chiasma, affecting the right optic nerve and causing temporary loss of vision in that eye. Evoked visual potentials are performed and a first examination reveals that loss of vision was preceded by an alteration of response through the right optical path. The physiopathology is discussed and an evolutionary study of the lesion is made, evaluating the usefulness of EVPs in the diagnosis and follow-up in these patients.

Visual potentials evoked by whole-field pattern reversal (PRVEP) are most frequently used for the diagnosis of damage of the optic nerve. Already in monocular whole-field stimulation typical PRVEP findings could also be observed in case of a damage of the visual pathway in its further course (chiasm or lesion of the optic tract). The application of a hemi-field stimulation led to a distinct improvement of the information value with respect to the presence of a damage of the optic chiasm. A reduction of the amplitudes at the beginning of the disease, the subsequent extension of the P100 latency

Power spectral analysis (PSA) was performed on the visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to counterphased checkerboard stimuli from 98 eyes in 49 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and 54 eyes of 27 normal volunteers. Attenuation of high frequency components of the transient visual evoked potential was found in 53% of MS patients and 4% of controls. Loss of high frequency components was poorly correlated with prolonged latency (r = 0.346). The consideration of both PSA and latency of the VEP increased the percentage of MS patients exhibiting visual pathway conduction abnormalities from 61% to 86%

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different flash intensities were recorded at a central site (Cz) plus at homologous temporal and occipital locations in normal and unmedicated schizophrenic subjects. Schizophrenic patients showed an hemisphere asymmetry of the P100-N120 peak-trough amplitude with smaller left but larger right hemisphere amplitudes than normal. Further, two subgroups of patients were found with abnormalities lateralized to the left hemisphere. One group was found to have abnormal P100 amplitude-intensity patterns at the left temporal site while the other group showed deviant N

Visual evoked potentials were obtained for schizophrenics, neurotics and patients with affective disorders, and comparison between those before and after an addition test for 15 min was made. Reduction in amplitude and prolongation of latency of the potential were observed in schizophrenics after the test, while there was no change after that in neurotics and patients with affective psychosis. In schizophrenics, 4 types of changes in amplitude of the potential could be seen after the test. Namely, marked reduction occurred in A1 (A1 type), in A3 with fast recovery (A3f type), in A3 with slow r

Maturation of visual and auditory evoked potentials (mainly the P3 wave) of 10 controls and of 10 infants exposed to recurrent postnatal stressful events (crying spells lacking organic basis) have been compared. The sourse of maturation of P3 waves may serve as indicator of growth and nature of cognitive processes (including perception). Recurrent srying spells seemed to delay appearance of visual P3 wave, prolonged its latency, and delayed appearance of visible differences in the shape of visual P3 wave upon exposure of the subjects to different visual experiences. A compensatory increase of

The pathogenesis of the pattern reversal visual evoked potential (PRVEP) abnormalities in patients with Wilson's disease (WD) has not been investigated earlier. Since electroretinography (ERG) assesses the functional integrity of the retina, it was used along with PRVEP to localize the abnormalities in PRVEP in Wilson's patients. Ten newly diagnosed Wilson's disease patients underwent PRVEP and flash ERG soon after the diagnosis was established. The PRVEP latencies were prolonged in comparison with the controls (P<0.001). Photopic and scotopic A waves and oscillatory potentials were prolonged

PURPOSE: We wished to define the localization of cortical generators of visual (pattern) evoked potentials (VEP) and the temporal sequence of activation in the occipital region.
METHODS: In 4 candidates for epilepsy surgery, a large array of subdural electrodes was placed over occipital areas. Checkerboard pattern reversal stimuli were generated and the epileptogenic focus was localized and functionally mapped. Magnetic resonance imaging did not show any occipital lesions in any of the 4 patients.
RESULTS: The area first activated was the lingual gyrus in the mesial occipital lobe (negative

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can non-invasively modify cortical neural activity by means of a time-varying magnetic field. For example, in cognitive neuroscience, it is applied to create reversible "virtual lesions" in healthy humans (usually assessed as diminished performance in a behavioral task), thereby helping to establish causal structure-function relationships. Despite its widespread use, it is still rather unclear how TMS acts on existing, task-related neural activity, potentially resulting in a measurable effect on the behavioral level. Here, we deliver TMS to early visual

Optic neuritis (ON) detection is important for the early diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). However, the conventional high-contrast visual evoked potential (VEP) used for ON detection lacks sensitivity for identifying ON presenting as mild or unremarkable visual disturbance, which is common in first-episode ON. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether a change in contrast or check size improves the sensitivity of VEP to first-ever ON. In total, 60 patients with the demyelinating disease (29 MS and 31 idiopathic pati

Objective. There has become of increasing interest in transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) since its inception nearly a decade ago. tACS in modulating brain state is an active area of research and has been demonstrated effective in various neuropsychological and clinical domains. In the visual domain, much effort has been dedicated to brain rhythms and rhythmic stimulation, i.e. tACS. However, less is known about the interplay between the rhythmic stimulation and visual stimulation.Approach.Here, we used steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP), induced by flickering driving

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) provide a means to examine neural mechanisms in autism with high temporal resolution. Conventional VEP analysis relies on subjective inspection of a few points (peaks and troughs) in the time-domain waveform. The current study applied power spectral analysis and magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) statistics (frequency-domain measures) to VEPs recorded during 1-minute runs and with a recently developed short-duration technique that allow for objective examination of the responses (Zemon & Gordon, European Journal of Neuroscience, 2018, 48, 1765-1788) from nonautis

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a chronic condition, affecting central and peripheral nervous system. Studies on cranial nerve conduction in obesity are scarce and unclear; therefore, we planned this study. The aim of this study was to evaluate optic and auditory nerve conductions in obesity.
METHODS: It was a case-control study, with inclusion of 40 young males (20 obese and 20 controls) in age group of 18-30 years. We recorded pattern reversal visual evoked potential (PRVEP) and brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP). The PRVEP P100 latency and BAEP absolute and interpeak latencies were analyzed

BACKGROUND: Neural compensatory mechanisms have been proposed, which preserve the binocular visual field in glaucoma, as well as cognition in Alzheimer's disease and motor function in Parkinson's disease. It is conceivable that comparable mechanisms operate to preserve function in congenital and/or dystrophic disease. In hereditary colour vision deficiency (CVD), we observed significant facilitation in the amplitude of the binocular cone-specific visual evoked potential (VEP) compared to the monocular amplitude for the cone type corresponding to the CVD. We propose that this finding may reflec

OBJECTIVES: During surgeries that put the visual pathway at risk of injury, continuous monitoring of the visual function is desirable. However, the intraoperative monitoring of the visual evoked potential (VEP) is not yet widely used. We evaluate here the clinical utility of intraoperative VEP monitoring.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively 46 consecutive surgeries in 2011-2013. High luminance stimulating devices delivered flash stimuli on the closed eyelid during intravenous anesthesia. We monitored VEP features N75 and P100 and took patients' preoperative and postoperative visual function
