MicroRNAs represent nonprotein coding small RNA molecules that are very stable to degradation and responsible for gene silencing in most eukaryotic cells. Increased evidence has been accumulating over the years about their potential value as biomarkers for several diseases. MicroRNAs were predicted to be involved in nearly all biological processes from development to oncogenesis. In this review, we address the importance of circulating microRNAs in different conditions associated with pregnancy starting with the implantation period to preeclampsia and we shortly describe the correlation betwee

West Nile virus (WNV) was introduced to New York in 1999 and rapidly spread throughout North America and into parts of Central and South America. Displacement of the original New York (NY99) genotype by the North America/West Nile 2002 (NA/WN02) genotype occurred in 2002 with subsequent identification of a novel genotype in 2003 in isolates collected from the southwestern Unites States region (SW/WN03 genotype). Both genotypes co-circulate to date. Subsequent WNV surveillance studies have confirmed additional genotypes in the United States that have become extinct due to lack of a selective ad

The taeniasis/cysticercosis complex is included in the list of neglected zoonotic diseases by the World Health Organization due to its significant impact on public health in tropical areas. Cysticercosis is still endemic in many regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Long absent in Europe and in other developed countries, cysticercosis has recently re-emerged in the United States and Canada, due to immigration, travel and local transmission. This has encouraged the use of molecular data to understand better the influence of animal and human hosts on the emergence and spread of Taenia speci

Meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis remains an important health problem in many parts of the world, and there are currently no comprehensive vaccines. Poor immunogenicity, combined with immunological identity to human sialic acids, have hindered the development of a serogroup B conjugate vaccine, resulting in the development of alternative vaccine candidates, including many outer-membrane protein (OMP)-based formulations. However, the design of protein-based meningococcal vaccines is complicated by the high level of genetic and antigenic diversity of the meningoc

BACKGROUND: As pathogens that circumvent the host immune response are favoured by selection, so are host alleles that reduce parasite load. Such evolutionary processes leave their signature on the genes involved. Deciphering modes of selection operating on immune genes might reveal the nature of host-pathogen interactions and factors that govern susceptibility in host populations. Such understanding would have important public health implications.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: We analyzed polymorphisms in four mosquito immune genes (SP14D1, GNBP, defensin, and gambicin) to decipher selection effects,

The genetic basis of vertebrate morphological evolution has traditionally been very difficult to examine in naturally occurring populations. Here we describe the generation of a genome-wide linkage map to allow quantitative trait analysis of evolutionarily derived morphologies in the Mexican cave tetra, a species that has, in a series of independent caves, repeatedly evolved specialized characteristics adapted to a unique and well-studied ecological environment. We focused on the trait of albinism and discovered that it is linked to Oca2, a known pigmentation gene, in two cave populations. We

Nucleotide sequences of the genome RNA encoding capsid protein VP1 (918 nucleotides) of 18 enterovirus 70 (EV70) isolates collected from various parts of the world in 1971 to 1981 were determined, and nucleotide substitutions among them were studied. The genetic distances between isolates were calculated by the pairwise comparison of nucleotide difference. Regression analysis of the genetic distances against time of isolation of the strains showed that the synonymous substitution rate was very high at 21.53 x 10(-3) substitution per nucleotide per year, while the nonsynonymous rate was extreme

The pyrogenic toxin (PT) family is composed of the staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE), the toxic shock syndrome toxin, and the streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins (SPE). Whereas considerable effort has focused on characterization of PTs due to their unique biological properties, our understanding of the evolution of this gene family is incomplete. Phylogenetic relationships for members of the PT family were estimated by examining the previously reported nucleotide sequences of the genes encoding SPEA, SPEC, SEA, SEB, SEC1, SEC2, SEC3, SED, and SEE. Additionally, we present and analyze sequence dat

The landscape of clinical diagnostics is undergoing a fundamental shift from centralized laboratories toward decentralized point-of-care testing (POCT) models. Conventional molecular diagnostics often suffer from prolonged turnaround times, high operational costs, and a strict reliance on sophisticated infrastructure. To overcome these limitations, modern POCT platforms have deeply integrated advanced molecular techniques. These include diverse isothermal nucleic acid amplification methods (such as LAMP, RPA, and RCA) and highly specific CRISPR/Cas recognition systems. Furthermore, coupling th

Squash leaf curl China virus (SLCCNV) is an important geminivirus that infects cucurbit crops and is widely distributed across Asia. To elucidate its population structure and molecular evolution, 101 DNA-A and 67 DNA-B strain sequences of SLCCNV that were publicly available from 2001 to 2024 were analyzed. The strains clustered into three major geographic clades, including South Asia, the Malay Archipelago, and Mainland Southeast Asia. Recombination analysis revealed breakpoints mainly concentrated in the AC2 and BC1 regions. Signals of positive selection were indicated for AC4 and AC5 by sele

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) produced diverse molecular variants during its recent expansion in humans that caused different transmissibility and severity of the associated disease as well as resistance to monoclonal antibodies and polyclonal sera, among other treatments. In order to understand the causes and consequences of the observed SARS-CoV-2 molecular diversity, a variety of recent studies investigated the molecular evolution of this virus during its expansion in humans. In general, this virus evolves with a moderate rate of evolution, in the order of

Mpox (previously known as monkeypox) is an infectious viral illness caused by the mpox virus (MPXV), an orthopoxvirus that belongs to the family Poxviridae. The symptoms of mpox in humans are similar to those of smallpox, although the mortality rate is lower. In recent years, the concern over a potential global pandemic has increased due to reports of mpox spreading across Africa and other parts of the world. Prior to this discovery, mpox was a rare zoonotic disease restricted to endemic regions of Western and Central Africa. The sudden emergence of MPXV cases in multiple regions has raised co

A better understanding of changes in HIV-1 population genetics with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is critical for designing eradication strategies. We therefore analyzed HIV-1 genetic variation and divergence in patients' plasma before cART, during suppression on cART, and after viral rebound. Single-genome sequences of plasma HIV-1 RNA were obtained from HIV-1 infected patients prior to cART (N = 14), during suppression on cART (N = 14) and/or after viral rebound following interruption of cART (N = 5). Intra-patient population diversity was measured by average pairwise difference

Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a linear single-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Parvoviridae family that has recently been isolated from the upper respiratory tract of children with acute respiratory infection. All of the strains observed so far segregate into two genotypes (1 and 2) with a low level of polymorphism. Given the recent description of the infection and the lack of epidemiological and molecular data, we estimated the virus's rates of molecular evolution and population dynamics. A dataset of forty-nine dated VP2 sequences, including also eight new isolates obtained from pharyngeal sw

Cymothoid isopods are parasites that have a biphasic life cycle comprised of free-swimming micropredatory stages that eventually attach permanently to fishes, on which they change sex and morphology. Thus, matching free-swimming and permanently attached life-history stages is difficult. We attempted to identify natatory-stage cymothoids by seeking matches of partial 16S rRNA gene sequences from these stages and described adult cymothoids. Natatory cymothoids were collected from light traps at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef and adult females were collected from fishes from several sites alon

Sonochemical processes are known to occur in nature and have occurred ever since there was liquid water on Earth. We advance a hypothesis that complex carbonaceous compounds, the probable precursors of life, were produced from simple primordial molecules by sonochemical processes in breaking waves of primordial seas or oceans. Our calculations show that these processes were much more common on Earth than other pathways, suggested for the formation of prebiotic complex carbonaceous compounds. The high occurrence rate of sonochemical events in breaking sea waves and the qualitative difference be

We previously identified two murine secretory proteins, mE-RABP(Lcn5) and mEP17(Lcn8), belonging to the lipocalin family and specifically expressed in the epididymis. The genes are contiguous and localized on mouse chromosome 2. We now show that five other related lipocalin genes, Lcn9, Lcn10, Lcn11, Lcn12, and Lcn13, that evolved by in situ tandem duplication are present on the same locus. Lcn9, Lcn10, Lcn12, and Lcn13 genes, like Lcn5 and Lcn8 genes, are specifically expressed in the mouse epididymis. However, each gene has a distinct spatial expression within the epididymis and different re

Interspecific hybridization and introgression are important evolutionary processes in plants, but their full significance with respect to speciation at the diploid level remains unresolved. In this study, molecular markers from the plastid and nuclear genomes were used to document an unusual evolutionary history of Gossypium bickii Prokh. (Malvaceae). This species is one of three morphologically similar Australian cottons (along with G. austrate F. Muell. and G. nelsonii Fryx.) in section Hibiscoidea. In contrast to expectations based on previous morphological data, cladistic analysis of mater

Human mastadenoviruses (HAdVs) are non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses that are comprised of more than 85 types classified within seven species (A-G) based on genomics. All HAdV prototypes and many newly defined type genomes have been completely sequenced and are available. Computational analyses of the prototypes and newly emergent HAdV strains provide insights into the evolutionary history and molecular adaptation of HAdV. Most types of HAdV-B are important pathogens causing severe respiratory infections or urinary tract infections and are well characterized. However, HAdV-16 of the B

Animal venom components are of considerable interest to researchers across a wide variety of disciplines, including molecular biology, biochemistry, medicine, and evolutionary genetics. The three-finger family of snake venom peptides is a particularly interesting and biochemically complex group of venom peptides, because they are encoded by a large multigene family and display a diverse array of functional activities. In addition, understanding how this complex and highly varied multigene family evolved is an interesting question to researchers investigating the biochemical diversity of these
