Tobacco smoking in patients with heart failure and coronary artery disease: A 20-year experience at Duke University Medical Center.

UNLABELLED: Smoking is associated with incident heart failure (HF), yet limited data are available exploring the association between smoking status and long-term outcomes in HF with reduced vs. preserved ejection fraction (i.e., HFrEF vs. HFpEF). METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of HF patients undergoing coronary angiography from 1990-2010. Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and HF were stratified by EF (< 50% vs. ≥50%), smoking status (prior/current vs. never smoker), and level of smoking (light/moderate vs. heavy). Time-from-catheterization-to-event was examined using

Relationship between tobacco smoking and colorectal polyps.

A prospective endoscopic screening examination of a randomized population sample of 200 men and 200 women, aged 50-59 years, enabled the differentiation between individuals with and without polyps in the rectum and sigmoid colon. Both number of years of smoking and percentage years of life with smoking were associated with the presence of adenomas and hyperplastic polyps, both for men and women. No relationship was found between these factors or the daily number of cigarettes and the degree of dysplasia or the size or multiplicity of polyps. Two years' follow-up examination showed a tendency t

Smoking induces shifts in cellular composition and transcriptome within the bronchial mucus barrier.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Smoking disturbs the bronchial-mucus-barrier. This study assesses the cellular composition and gene expression shifts of the bronchial-mucus-barrier with smoking to understand the mechanism of mucosal damage by cigarette smoke exposure. We explore whether single-cell-RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) based cellular deconvolution (CD) can predict cell-type composition in RNA-seq data. METHODS: RNA-seq data of bronchial biopsies from three cohorts were analysed using CD. The cohorts included 56 participants with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] (38 smokers; 18 ex-

Effects of cigarette smoking on thyroid function and the prevalence of goitre, thyrotoxicosis and autoimmune thyroiditis.

The effect of smoking habits on thyroid function and the prevalence of thyroid diseases was studied in two birth cohorts (1928 and 1941) of men and women. A total of 1555 individuals (836 men and 719 women) were smokers. 1048 individuals (604 men and 444 women) were ex-smokers and 1497 individuals (560 men and 937 women) were non-smokers. The serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration was significantly lower in smokers than in ex-smokers and non-smokers (P = 0.05 and P = 0.001, respectively). Smoking habits did not affect the serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. The prevalence of non-toxic g

The P300 brain potential is reduced in smokers.

RATIONALE: Tobacco smoking is the most prevalent type of substance abuse, yet its biobehavioral etiology is little understood. Identification of differences between smokers and non-smokers on basic characteristics of neurocognitive functioning may help to elucidate the mechanisms of tobacco dependence. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the relationship between smoking status and the P300 component of event-related potential (ERP) while controlling for potential confounders such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and psychopathology. METHODS: The ERP responses elicited by a visual oddball task were mea
