Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare, progressive disease of the pulmonary vasculature that is associated with pulmonary vascular remodeling and right heart failure. While there have been recent advances both in understanding pathobiology and in diagnosis and therapeutic options, PAH remains a disease with significant delays in diagnosis and high morbidity and mortality. Information from invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (iCPET) presents an important opportunity to evaluate the dynamic interactions within and between the right heart circulatory system and the skeletal muscle

This study examines the effects of continuous versus interrupted lifelong exercise on lipid metabolism in naturally aging male BALB/c mice. Five-week-old male BALB/c mice were randomly assigned to five groups: young control group (YC), natural ageing control group (AC), exercise cessation group (DE), middle-aged commencing exercise group (ME), and lifelong exercise group (LE). Moderate Intensity Continuous Training exercise sessions were conducted three times per week, with each session lasting 50 min; after exercise interventions until 72 weeks of age, the following parameters were measured:

Older adults with reduced physical capacity are at greater risk of progression to care dependency. Progressive resistance strength exercise and multimodal exercise have been studied to restore reduced physical capacity. To summarize the best evidence of the two exercise regimes, this meta-analysis study appraised randomized-controlled trials from published systematic reviews. Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Review and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Clinical Trials were searched for relevant systematic reviews. Two reviewers independently screened the relevant

An incremental response after brief exercise or high-rate stimulation on the repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) test is a critical diagnostic criterion for Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). This prospective study was performed to determine what duration of exercise shows the highest diagnostic sensitivity for LEMS. The compound muscle action potential amplitude in the abductor digiti quinti muscle was obtained at rest and after 5 s, 10 s, 15 s, 20 s, 25 s, and 30 s of exercise. Incremental responses were compared for the different exercise durations in 24 studies performed in nine LEMS

Proper physical activity, even at a very light intensity such as walking or slow running, improves brain health related to prefrontal executive function and hippocampal memory. However, the neural mechanism behind the cognitive enhancement that occurs during dynamic aerobic exercise is elusive and remains unclear in humans. Recently, pupillometry has been attracting attention as a kind of readout of the brain's ascending arousal mechanism, especially for brain noradrenergic and cholinergic system activation. Thus, to identify the neural mechanism behind the effects of very-light-intensity exer

Rehabilitative exercises require precise movement coordination and target accuracy for optimal effectiveness. This paper explores the impact of tongue strength exercises (TSE) performance accuracy on exercise outcomes, adherence, and participant confidence and motivation. An 8-week randomized clinical trial included 84 typically aging participants divided into four groups defined by access to biofeedback (present/absent) and TSE intensity dosing (maximal/submaximal) during a home exercise program (HEP). Retention, training, and HEP accuracy were tracked at biweekly visits and during HEP for pa

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin is an iron regulating hormone, and exercise-induced hepcidin elevation is suggested to increase the risk of iron deficiency among athletes.
OBJECTIVE: We compared serum hepcidin responses to resistance exercise and endurance (cycling) exercise.
METHODS: Ten males [mean ± standard error: 172 ± 2 cm, body weight: 70 ± 2 kg] performed three trials: a resistance exercise trial (RE), an endurance exercise trial (END), and a rest trial (REST). The RE consisted of 60 min of resistance exercise (3-5 sets × 12 repetitions, 8 exercises) at 65% of one repetition maximum, while 60 m

BACKGROUND: Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is the most frequent form of atypical Parkinsonism. Although there is preliminary evidence for the benefits of gait rehabilitation, balance training and oculomotor exercises in PSP, the quality of reporting of exercise therapies appears mixed. The current investigation aims to evaluate the comprehensiveness of reporting of exercise and physical activity interventions in the PSP literature.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers used the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template (CERT) to extract all exercise intervention data from 11 studies include

We sought to determine whether oral contraception alters the gender-related differences observed in the exercise pressor reflex during isometric handgrip exercise. Fifteen men, fifteen normally menstruating women (WomenNM), and fifteen women taking monophasic oral contraceptives (WomenOC) completed two trials of a 3-min isometric handgrip exercise protocol performed at 30% of their maximal voluntary contraction: (1) where arterial occlusion was applied to the previously exercising arm during a 3-min recovery period (Occlusion trial); (2) where no arterial occlusion was applied during recovery

BACKGROUND: Although supervised exercise therapy is considered to be of significant benefit for people with leg pain (peripheral arterial disease (PAD)), implementing supervised exercise programs (SETs) in daily practice has limitations. This is an update of a review first published in 2006.
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this review was to provide an accurate overview of studies evaluating the effects of supervised versus non-supervised exercise therapy on maximal walking time or distance on a treadmill for people with intermittent claudication.
SEARCH METHODS: For this update, the Cochr

The impact of age, sex and body mass index on interstitial glucose levels as measured via continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) during exercise in the healthy population is largely unexplored. We conducted a multivariable generalized estimating equation (GEE) analysis on CGM data (Dexcom G6, 10 days) collected from 119 healthy exercising individuals using CGM with the following specified covariates: age; sex; BMI; exercise type and duration. Females had lower postexercise glycemia as compared with males (92 ± 18 vs. 100 ± 20 mg/dL, p = 0.04) and a greater change in glycemia during exercise from

Stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR) and arterio-venous O2 difference (a-vO2diff) responses to heavy and severe-intensity exercise have been well documented; however, there is a lack of information on the SV, HR and a v-O2diff responses of work rates within extreme exercise domain. The aim of this study was, therefore, to focus on central and peripheral components of VO2 responses to exercises performed within the heavy, severe and extreme exercise domain. Eight well-trained male cyclists participated in this study. Maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) and corresponding work rate (P@VO2max) were det

Exercise training is generally beneficial for cardiovascular health, improving stroke volume, cardiac output, and aerobic capacity. Despite these benefits, some evidence indicates that endurance training may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), particularly in highly trained individuals. Among multiple mechanisms, autonomic tone changes and atrial remodeling have been proposed as main contributors for exercise-induced AF. However, the contribution of local and systemic immunity is poorly understood in the development of atrial arrhythmogenic substrates. Here we aim to update the fiel

What is the central question of this study? Temperature-sensitive mechanisms are thought to contribute to blood-flow regulation, but the relationship between exercising and non-exercising limb perfusion and blood temperature is not established. What is the main finding and its importance? The close coupling among perfusion, blood temperature and aerobic metabolism in exercising and non-exercising extremities across different exercise modalities and activity levels and the tight association between limb vasodilatation and increases in plasma ATP suggest that both temperature- and metabolism-sen

Background: Treadmill exercise testing (TET) is commonly used to measure exercise capacity. Studies have shown that cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is more accurate than TET and is, therefore, regarded as the "gold standard" for testing maximum exercise capacity and prescribing exercise plans. To date, no studies have reported the differences in exercise capacity after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using the two methods or how to more accurately measure exercise capacity based on the results of TET. Aims: This study aims to measure maximum exercise capacity in post-PCI patie
