Effectiveness of Physical Rehabilitation Interventions on Walking Capacity and Wearable Sensor-Derived Performance After Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Improvements in walking capacity after stroke do not always translate into increased real-world performance, highlighting a critical gap in promoting long-term health after rehabilitation. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of physical rehabilitation interventions, including exercise, behaviour change techniques (BCTs), and combined approaches, on wearable sensor-derived movement behaviours and walking capacity in people with stroke. Four databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus) were searched through May 2026 for randomized controlled trials comparing these i

Core Training in Low Back Disorders: Role of the Pilates Method.

The Pilates method is a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes recruitment and strengthening of the core muscles, flexibility, and breathing, to promote stability and control of movement. Its focus bears similarity to current evidence-based exercise programs for low back disorders. Spinal stability is a function of three interdependent systems, osseoligamentous, muscular, and neural control; exercise addresses both the muscular and neural function. The "core" typically refers to the muscular control required to maintain functional stability. Prior research has highli

[Surgical treatment of chondromalacia patellae according to Maquet/Bandi--indication, technique, results (author's transl)].

Degenerative changes of the femoropatellar joint are being observed increasingly more often. These may be due to various disturbances of the gliding movement and gliding plane. The article describes the clinical and x-ray symptoms and the therapy; in most cases, additional surgery will be necessary besides antepositioning according to the technique described by Bandi.--Follow-up examinations of 32 patients showed that in 28 of 35 surgically treated knee joints, a positive influence had been exercised on the complaints, load capacity and walking distance.

Multisensory Evaluation of Muscle Activity and Human Manipulability during Upper Limb Motor Tasks.

In this work, we evaluate the relationship between human manipulability indices obtained from motion sensing cameras and a variety of muscular factors extracted from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the upper limb during specific movements that include the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. The results show specific links between upper limb movements and manipulability, revealing that extreme poses show less manipulability, i.e., when the arms are fully extended or fully flexed. However, there is not a clear correlation between the sEMG signals' average activity and manipulability f

Ankle-joint mobility and standing squat posture in elite junior cross-country skiers. A pilot study.

AIM: Skating technique in cross-country skiing is a complex multi-joint movement with kinematics comparable to those of the standing squat exercise where any restricted joint mobility in the lower extremity-chain may change the movement pattern. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of ankle mobility on trunk posture during squat exercise in cross-country skiers. METHODS: Seven elite junior cross-country skiers (age range 17-19 years) performed two different standing squats, one with hands on hips and one with arms extended above the head. The squats were recorded on video

Tissue Doppler imaging reproducibility during exercise.

Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is an echocardiographic technique used during exercising to improve the accuracy of a cardiovascular diagnostic. The validity of TDI requires its reproducibility, which has never been challenged during moderate to maximal intensity exercising. The present study was specifically designed to assess the transmitral Doppler and pulsed TDI reproducibility in 19 healthy men, who had undergone two identical semi-supine maximal exercise tests on a cycle ergometer. Systolic (S') and diastolic (E') tissue velocities at the septal and lateral walls as well as early transmitra

Exercises for the torso performed in a standing posture: spine and hip motion and motor patterns and spine load.

The purpose of this study was to document the muscle activity, spine motion, spine load, and stiffness during several movement-based or "functional" exercises and to assess the effect of technique change. Eight subjects, all healthy men from a university population, were instrumented to obtain surface electromyography of selected trunk and hip muscles, together with video analysis and electromagnetic lumbar spine position sensor to track spine posture. Exercises included a walkout in the sagittal plane that compared an upright form against a wall with those performed on the floor, overhead cab

Effect of myofunctional exercise combined with laser-assisted frenectomy in the management of paediatric tongue tie.

We present three cases for the management of paediatric tongue tie (ankyloglossia) through laser-assisted frenectomy and postoperative oral myofunctional exercises. Ankyloglossia, characterised by a restricted lingual frenulum, poses challenges in tongue movement and is traditionally treated with surgical interventions. Laser technology, particularly diode lasers, has shown promise in paediatric cases due to reduced bleeding, minimal discomfort and faster recovery. The case series presents three instances where patients underwent laser-assisted frenectomy, demonstrating improved tongue functio

Diagnostic sensitivity of subjective and quantitative laryngeal ultrasonography for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy in horses.

Recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) is the most common cause of laryngeal hemiplegia in horses and causes neurogenic atrophy of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles, including the cricoarytenoideus lateralis muscle. Recurrent laryngeal neuropathy results in paresis to paralysis of the vocal fold and arytenoid cartilage, which limits performance through respiratory compromise. Ultrasound has previously been reported to be a useful diagnostic technique in horses with RLN. In this report, the diagnostic sensitivity of subjective and quantitative laryngeal ultrasonography was evaluated in 154 horses p

Kinetic Pattern Recognition in Home-Based Knee Rehabilitation Using Machine Learning Clustering Methods on the Slider Digital Physiotherapy Device: Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in rehabilitation sciences have progressively used computational techniques to improve diagnostic and treatment approaches. However, the analysis of high-dimensional, time-dependent data continues to pose a significant problem. Prior research has used clustering techniques on rehabilitation data to identify movement patterns and forecast recovery outcomes. Nonetheless, these initiatives have not yet used force or motion datasets obtained outside a clinical setting, thereby limiting the capacity for therapeutic decisions. Biomechanical data analysis has demonstra

Treatment effectiveness for patients with a history of repetitive hand use and focal hand dystonia: a planned, prospective follow-up study.

Recent studies show that rapid, nearly simultaneous, stereotypical repetitive fine motor movements can degrade the sensory representation of the hand and lead to a loss of normal motor control with a target task, referred to as occupational hand cramps or focal hand dystonia. The purpose of this prospective follow-up study was to determine whether symptomatic patients in jobs demanding high levels of repetition could be relieved of awkward, involuntary hand movements following sensory discriminative retraining complemented by a home program of sensory exercises, plus traditional posture, relax
