Field expansion for homonymous hemianopia by optically induced peripheral exotropia.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel method for prism correction of hemianopia that provides field-of-view expansion in a convenient and functional format and to evaluate initial clinical application. METHOD: To expand the upper quadrant of the field, a high power prism segment (30-40delta) is placed base-out across the upper part of the spectacle lens, on the side of the loss, at about the level of the limbus. A similar prism segment at the lower part of the lens is used to treat the lower field. The peripheral location of the prisms causes peripheral exotropia. As a result a scene segment as high a

Acute transient large-angle exotropia caused by traumatic orbital contusion.

We report an unusual case of acute large-angle left exotropia associated with blunt orbital trauma in a healthy 8-year-old boy. Examination revealed a large-angle left exotropia with limitation in adduction of the left eye. Microhyphema and commotio retinae of the left eye were also present. High-resolution orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated perimuscular and intramuscular edema mostly involving the left medial rectus muscle but also involving the left lateral rectus muscle. The extraocular muscle insertions were intact. Complete resolution of the strabismus and adduction lim

Vision therapy for basic exotropia in adults: 2 case studies.

BACKGROUND: Basic exotropia accounts for approximately 50% of all intermittent exotropias. Many clinicians view treating these patients, especially adults with childhood-onset exotropia, as challenging. Conflicting opinions still exist regarding prescribing any treatment for adult strabismics, including surgical realignment and optometric vision therapy (VT). CASE REPORTS: Two cases are discussed, both of which are adult patients with moderate-size intermittent exotropia of the basic type who presented with asthenopia, headaches, and/or diplopia. Twenty to 30 in-office VT sessions were recomm

Consecutive cyclic exotropia after surgery for adult-onset cyclic esotropia.

Cyclic esotropia--periods of esotropia alternating with periods of orthotropia, most commonly on a 48-hour cycle--is a rare condition seen mostly in children. Surgical correction of the maximum deviation generally corrects the esotropia without resulting in alternating periods of exotropia, as might be expected if the periodicity continued postoperatively. Unlike cyclic esotropia in children, the few reported adult cases have often been associated with severe acquired monocular visual impairment; however, the response to surgical treatment is reported to be the same as that in children. We rep

Functional amblyopia in kittens with unilateral exotropia. I. Electrophysiological assessment.

In two cats in which surgically induced, unilateral divergent strabismus had led to behaviourally determined amblyopia, a variety of electrophysiological parameters were determined in search of neuronal correlates of squint amblyopia. Tests that assess global neuronal excitability along the pathways from the two eyes to the visual cortex (areas 17 and 18) failed to reflect the functional inferiority of the squinting eye: retinographic responses and cortical evoked potentials elicited by Ganzfeld-stimulation and by stimulation of the optic nerves were identical for the two eyes. The ocular domi

Mental resilience in children with intermittent exotropia: a latent profile analysis.

This study aims to investigate the levels of psychological resilience, identify distinct subgroups of psychological resilience in children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) and to explore the key factors that differentiate these subgroups. A cross-sectional study. The study explored the characteristics and influencing factors of psychological resilience in children with IXT. Data were collected from IXT patients between June 2023 and January 2024. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was used as the research tool, and latent profile analysis was applied to identify subgroups based on psycholog

Surgical management of hypotropia and exotropia in high myopia: a case report.

Myopic strabismus, also known as heavy eye syndrome, is a rare ocular motility disorder, typically presenting with bilateral esotropia and hypotropia. We present the case of a 42-year-old man who presented with progressive hypotropia and exotropia rather than esotropia. Orbital imaging revealed a superonasal staphyloma with pathological changes in the extraocular muscles. Surgical correction involved loop myopexy between the superior rectus and medial rectus muscles combined with lateral rectus recession.

Types of refractive errors in a sample of Iraqi children with Intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common strabismus types in children is intermittent exotropia (IXE), which predominantly occurs in children between the ages of 2-4 years. It may affect visual development and often coexists with refractive errors. Unlike esotropia, which is typically associated with hyperopia, IXE demonstrates a more complex relationship with refractive errors. Recent studies suggest a possible link with myopia; however, this relationship remains unclear. This study will investigate the prevalence and distribution of refractive errors in children with IXE, challenging the tradition
